Re: [newbie] Samba, Windows XP and Mdk10
You might want to try 'webmin'. It's a web based interface that you can use to change the settings of most functions/servers on MDK. I used it to set up Samba on my MDK10 and it was relatively easy. =) Cheers! Re: [newbie] Samba/Windows XP
If you can ping each machine using ip#'s then the next thing to check is your naming scheme. Are both machines using the same workgroup name? Are there any entries in the logs that could possibly point out the problem? The vast majority of problems you'll first encounter with samba are permissions/password issues btw. I'd reccommend that you peruse the fault tree and How-To troubleshoot samba sections included in the using_samba book that comes with the distro or is available here: http://us2.samba.org/samba/ftp/docs/htmldocs/using_samba/ch09_01.html Ken Nowack __ Do You Yahoo!? Some routers have been known to say 'I recognise that device' and respond to ping accordingly without passing the ping through the router so that the real device is given a chance to respond. This can be a pain to debug: You're pinging happily but nothing else works. I wouldn't believe this either if I hadn't seen it and the anquish on the tech's faces once they realised. Try looking at your computers own names and network setup. You shouldn't need the cable company to tell you the computer names. They are normally the netbios names. Consider posting more setup details. They may offer the clue we need. Tony Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

If it's a hub you should be able to ping from one box to the other.. If ping fails start there. Your IP's are both in the same subnet aren't they? With ,presumably, the cable device acting as the gateway if the subnets and routing aren't right the devices will not be able to cross-talk. Devices which connect from cable modems to a network may have routing setup that stops the 'hub' connections cross-talking (i've got a Cisco unit set up that way). If you can't find the spec's for your hub to see if it's got routing built in you could test this theory by buying or borrowing a cheap hub and temporarily plug your network leads into that. If you can ping with the cheap hub installed but not with the cable-hub then your cable-hub is a router which needs re-configuration. Good luck Tony Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Only if I do it through the internet, as in: ping ip#. Trying to ping with the computer names the cable company gave me doesn't work (these are the names I am attempting to use as the computer names for samba).
