The INSTALLER (called DrakX) will update you as well as make a fresh install and it does work over the network. I explained how to get it for 8.2 (the one for 8.1 will look at the wrong dependency list). That is your primary update tool over the web; however, I should point out that despite volunteer mirrors allowing several thousand simultaneous users, little to nothing has been available this week as it has been literally choked. I suggest downloading and burning CDs if you have the capability, because these are volunteer mirrors and they don't always set all the permissions correctly, which can abort the update at an inconvenient point. Plus you are looking at about triple the task for updating Mandrake over updating Debian unless you have added a lot of packages to the Debian default install. Re: [newbie] Update help please
On March 22, 2002 01:12 am, Civileme spake thusly: Well, you could put a mirror with the 8.2 packages on your update list with Software Manager, and check what you want to update and do that until you are at 8.2, but that would be a painful experience, though it would (eventually) work. Software manager installs groups of packages that require or depend on each other much like apt-get. Another and better way is to find a mirror that has the 8,2 packages and look in /images and download network.img then dd if=network.img of=/dev/fd0 and boot from that floppy, once again identifying the site and the directory that has the Mandrake RPMS as your source. You can then install or update as you choose, and you can select additional packages, but all your currently installed packages would be updated. (Except the kernel which would be installed.) Actually if you go into the Mandrake Package Manager, one of the choices at the top is Mandrake update. If you click on that the program will go to the network and your selected mirror and determine which packages are available for updating what is installed on your computer. This works fine for most cases and could work for what you want to do although I have not tried it that way. Dependencies should be automatically detected and added to the list. Do not use it to upgrade a kernel, however cause that can and will often, trash your current kernel and mess you up bigtime. If need be do the kernel with urpmi kernel-4.x.x.i586.rpm etc and that will install next to the existing kernel. Then add the new kernel to lilo and then do the upgrade. HTH Dennis M.

That's what urpmi is for (which MandrakeUpdate uses). But aside from "this is how I used to do it", what's wrong with using the CDs? I personally would rather have fresh RPMs at my fingertips on CD than to have to download everything. I guess I should hve been more clear. How can I update the programs that I have installed to the current versions that are in 8.2 over the net? I do not want to update it with a cdrom. In Debian I just did apt-get update and i was able to update my system without doing a complete install.
