So have I with LM 7.2 and 8.0 and although there is still a big question with
the VIA chipset everything works as it should. I have no problems at all.

There's no kernel problem. What you experienced is indicative of
marginal or misconfigured hardware or bios version (Phoenix?). Most
likely problem is marginal cpu/cache/ram subsytem, ie, your
motherboard, or next, a marginal or misconfigured bios. The kernel's
already booted when you see that INIT mesg.

2001-11-10 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

While you may have experienced this, it's NOT symptomatic of Athlon
systems, or even 750's.

It's more likely you were running into another problem preventing the
first stage kernel load... I.E. it wasn't finding the partition table,
etc. At "Init" you didn't even have a running kernel.

Re: [newbie] mandrake linux on athlon-based systems?

2001-11-10 Thread Derek Jennings

Athlon works just great with Mandrake as does K6. You do not have to do
anything.

Any applications you compile on your Athlon will by default get compiled as
i686 architecture and will include extensions to the instruction set like
3dNow This is why for example the developers of mplayer encourage users to
compile for their individual machines rather than use a generic i386 or i586
RPM (Note: The mplayer developers depracate the gcc2.96 compiler that ships
with Mandrake because it leaves out the 3DNow optimisations. The alternative
gcc3.01 will compile for 3DNow)

If you look at /usr/src/linux/.config you can see which processor features
were used to compile your current kernel. You will notice there are specific
switches to compile in K6 or K7(Athlon) optimised code.

The default i586 optimised kernel works just fine with Athlon and you are
unlikely to notice any benefit if you recompile for Athlon. However graphics
intensive applications such as kde or mplayer should show a benefit because
of the i686 extended instruction set and 3DNow optimisations.

Hmmm... I've also got an athlon 800 running LM 8.0 with USB mouse and

errors, of course). ABIT KT-7, 256 mb RAM, Matrox G200, Maxtor 15 and 20

I've got Mandrake 8.0 runing on an Athlon-750 and can point you to one
problem which you might want to watch out for--appearantly there was some
sort of problem between the kernel and the BIOS which caused it to fail
booting; it'd lock up right after the "INIT 2.78" message. Easy enough to
fix; just make sure you install the older version of the kernel as well and
if the new kernel turns out to be a problem, go for the old one. :)

I dont think so, I have an Athlon 700 in a Gigabyte motherboard and it works
OK. I have read about some bug affecting VIA KT133 chipset, but till now I
didn't notice any problem.

By the way, I installed Mandrake 8.0
