IANAL! Unless something has changed, patents have a fairly short term
(17 years sounds right) and can be renewed once. Copyrights are the
thing that have the very long life, like life of the author plus 70(?)
years, and for coporations, 99(?) years.

Randy Kramer

I now know that IANAL is intended to mean "I Am Not A Lawyer", but
before I understood that, I thought it meant "I Am Not A Liar". I
wondered, for a very brief time, why all these people involved in legal
discussions felt the need to proclaim they were not liars. ;-)

Were your images photograph-type? PNG can't compete with JPG for
photographic quality images in the quality-size game. PNGs are great for
computer generated images like buttons, logos, and some screenshots.
Take a screenshot of an e-mail message or something text-heavy, save it
as a PNG and then a JPG to see the lossy JPG compression--it just can't
compete with PNG for quality, but JPG wins in file size.

You're falling into a common error; the two are, algorithmically, chalk
and cheese.

JPG is lossy compression. In other words, In The Beginning there was a
'pure' image (even if only going down the wire to a scanner) which the
JPEG algorithm deliberately slightly degraded to save disk space but
preserve an acceptable image quality. Hence the slider on 'save as
JPEG' which allows you to change the degree of compression from 0 -
perfect reproduction - to 100 - infinite degradation.

PNG is lossless. Thus the image is 'pure' so has a bigger file size but
'perfect' quality.

So converting JPG to PNG is gaining no value (doing the conversion will
in crease the file size but won't undegrade the image) whereas PNG to
JPG may be worthwhile.

PNG was developed by Compuserve because of the _last_ great image spat,
namely Unisys claiming patents on GIF.

can you really? then why are all the png images i make so damn big? i
tried to convert my site from jpg to png about 8 months ago, every image
tripled, or more, in size! maybe i am doing something wrong..

The patent was issued in October 1987, so,
unless there are addendums, it should be expiring in 2004, right?
Not much time to collect on it...

Take any .gif file and just rename it as a .png, you'll get the same
image when you open it (or v'versa). You can also take M$ .ico's and

the claim seems to adress programs having the ability to display JPG,
not the ones serving it, so maybe we would have to end up paying in order
to be able to get a 'licensed' browser with jpg-display capability

( just in case, keep your gqview program handy and hidden ;oP )
