Re: [newbie] [ OT ] StarOffice 5.2 vs. OpenOffice 6.0

Thanks for your response! I haven't tried OpenOffice so I can't offer
any comparisons.

I see that others have, and I see your response that they have helped!

Good luck!

Hi,
Just an opinion here, but I tried SO5.2, SO6.0 and OpenOffice641. I just
removed both StarOffice programs off my computer today. I find OO to be
faster and more stable than SO6 and just plain faster than SO5.2. It is now
my official office suite.

FWIW,

well, YMMV, but open office is very noticably faster for me, and that 5.2
desktop was painful anyway

Everyone seems so impatient and angry these days. I think it's because so
many people use Windows at work. Do you think you'd be Mr. Politeness Man
after working on Windows 8 hrs. or more?

I can't answer your question but I have some of my own:

   * When you notice the slow performance, is swap being used? (Check
top). I got much improved performance when I added enough memory so
swap is not used, although, over time, eventually swap starts being
used, then I notice a slowdown and consider a reboot. (With 384 MB I
would not expect you are using swap, but I don't know what else you're
running.)

   * I ran StarOffice 5.2 for just a little while. I learned that
starting it was a killer (one minute plus to load), but once it was
loaded, it didn't take real long to load a specific application (within
StarOffice) or document. If I had to run StarOffice regularly, I'd
probably keep it open, and just switch there when I needed to do
something.

(PS: My experience with StarOffice was on a 300 MHz. machine with 128 MB
of RAM, StarOffice, except for initial loading was tolerable.)

On a box like that, nothing should run that slowly, but StarOffice
5.2 is by common consent one of the slowest programs outside 3D
animation rendering (Netscape 6.0 was strong competition at one time,
though!). I'd say if you don't need the propietary features of SO,
Open Office is fine and should be faster. SO 6.0 beta is also a
little faster. You might also be able to speed things up by not
installing components you don't need, though I can't promise anything
here.
