I've been working on setting up a new system at work, using an older Linux

lots of moving horozontal lines.
I found xorg.conf, but I'm not sure what changes I need to make there to get
it up and running, or if that's even the right place.
For refrence, the new monoter has a max res. of 800x600, and the old setting
was for 1280x1024.
The easy way is to log in as root, and run drakxconf. If you are set to
boot into the GUI mode, hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to a command line
interface login prompt. You can also get there by hitting the Esc key at
the boot screen, and typing "linux 3" at the prompt.

Sounds like a wrong vid-card choice, to me. Do a control>Alt>F1 to level 3
and run the config tool (or better yet, edit your /etc/inittab to boot to
level 3 instead of 5, reboot and then run the tool). I run a KVM switch,
without problems, but my latest mdk version is 9.2. I do have a SuSe 9.1
install (2.6 kernel) on the switch and it is fine.

BTW, you might want to turn off the "reply to" for list postings. You will
probably get more and better help if everyone can take part in the
discussion. There are some darn knowledgeable folks on this list that should
be able to expand on my suggestions.

hai everybody,

i am new to this group.

i have linux Mandrake 8.0 installed on my laptop.
while booting it shows nice X windows graphics with
details of processes being started(like starting as
single user etc.,). and after some time it shows some
errors(i guess as it appears for a fraction of a second)
and continues and then goes ONLY to normal console
login.

I saw some help on gericom website, but it's for SuSE
and i could not found the files they were talking
about.

   the laptop details.

You may also use from 'lilo' prompt "linux 1", for single user; "linux
2", for multi user/wo network; or "linux 3", multi user/w network,
leaving out the quotation marks. This will get you into a command line
in 'Text' mode.

At the command line, use Xconfigurator to setup X again. Test what you
select until you get a display that works.
