Re: Re: [newbie] RAMDISK ERROR ON MANDRAKE 7.2 INSTALL
That's odd... I had that problem with the 7.2 CDs I bought from CheapBytes but not with the copy I burnned from the .ISO files. Note that I did buy 7.2 from CB right after it was released, so it was on a CD-R disk rather than a pressed CD as CB normally sells. This is also the only CD I've ever had a problem with from CB. Has anyone bought a 7.2 CD from CheapBytes lately? Your CD drive on this particular system could be just enough eccentric to cause a bad load though there are many other CDs it could use flawlessly. Remember the laser is used to read the tracks, not to position the head, so it is quite possible this particular combo will not work. Try using a different CDROM drive or different media if you can. If that does not help, it is time to suspect a memory problem on your machine. Civileme If you have a problem with loading second stage, autoboot will not help.

Perhaps the memory in the other systems is not as sensitive (as in slower, less optimized) as the one you are trying to set up. I have heard of a CDplayer too fast for a certain program, the spin-up time was longer than the program would allow it to, hence the program would crash on a time-out. Re: [newbie] RAMDISK ERROR ON MANDRAKE 7.2 INSTALL
Hmmm.. And I've always held the pocketbooks in high regard. I started using Linux after getting one last year when they had Red Hat 6.0 and Caldera 2.2. The CD could be faulty, your CD reader could be faulty (or just "difficult " :-) , particularly if it's a DVD drive), or you could have some hardware combination that Mandrake doesn't like for some unknown reason. Mandrake doesn't like some particular combinations of motherboard and other components. There's a hardware compatibility list at www.linux-mandrake.com, try looking your hardware up there. I have the exact same problem...using the pocketbooks CD... My CDRom is a pioneer drive which works perfectly in win2000. This is not very reassuring. Re: [newbie] RAMDISK ERROR ON MANDRAKE 7.2 INSTALL
Sounds like your drive may be faulty. Any recent drive should be able to read this CD with no trouble. Some DVD drives have problems when accessing CD-ROMs, this is another possibility for your drive. You could try using some sort of bootdisc (I believe the Mandrake site has instructions to do this), and then try to install Linux. Is it possible to get your hands on another Mandrake CD to test on your system? There could be some slight imperfections on the disc that your DVD drive may not like but CD readers can cope with. If you have a CD burner, you can download Mandrake ISOs from sites like ftp://ftp.aarnet.edu.au and then burn them to CD, although this may take a while, particularly if you don't have something like cable or DSL Internet (by your e-mail address, I assume you have ordinary Optus dial-up access). Did you burn your own Mandrake CD? I had the same problem, and I later realised that I had a buffer underrun while burning. If that is the case, you will have to burn it again.
