I've had this same problem sincee 8.x. I finally had to buy a router, and
put that between the cable modem and my PC. I was then able to set my PC
up as a static IP, which worked like a charm. Actually, it also worked
using dhcp...but for me, no router = no cable modem access. I've never
been able to figure out why.

I'm a complete neophyte so take this with a grain of salt but I configured
eth0 as a lan connection and could not connect to the Internet unless the
host name was left blank.

Eh, not sure, probably. I do remember it said "lan" though, but I used
the installer in Swedish and don't know what minor differences in
wording there may be.
You can always go the mandrake control center and change the eth setup.

Sorry, wish I could be more helpful.

Mike,

I'll have a go at your second question. I'm guessing
you are sharing an internet connection through Linux.
It does this using NAT (network address translation)
and I spent a lot of time trying to get MSN messenger
voice / video to work. Until I found a site somewhere
that told me MSN voice / video doesn't work through
NAT, period. So, I gave up. And tried Yahoo
messenger instead, which (thankfully) does work
through NAT. Had to convince my friends to switch
too. And the good news? Another Microsoft product
bites the dust!!!

Now if the developers at Yahoo would only port voice /
video to Linux I'd be even happier!

Ron.

Try booting the installation from DOS. Since DOS will load a generic CD-ROM
driver hopefully it will allow 8.0 to see and access your drive.
With 8.0 in your drive boot your system with a win98 Start-up disk. Choose
the With CD-ROM
Support option.
I will be using N for my cd-rom. You will need to replace that with the
assignment which DOS gives to yours. The entries in ""s are those the system
issues, those without are the ones you are to enter:

"A:\>"N:\

"N:\>"cd\dosutils\autoboot

"N:\dosutils\autoboot>"autoboot.bat004

"C:\Mandrake>"cdrom

The Mandrake installation program will begin.

try xconfigurator or XF86setup (I think thats right) they are both console

After a new install my Xwindows has horizontal lines making most
applications INCLUDING DrakConf applications basically unusable. Perhaps if
I could get Xwindows working reasonably I could address some of the other
problems I am having. I reinstalled this morning - still horizontal lines
making most X applications INCLUDING DRAKCONF (smartass) basically unusable.
If anybody who is not a smartass can give me a clue as to how to correct my
Xwindows problem then I think I can figure the rest out for myself.

The card according to Windows Device Manager is Trident
9685/9680/9682/9685/9382/9385-1 PCI
It was discovered by the Mandrake install as Trident Microsystems TGUI9660
(generic) TGUI 9660/968x/968x

All non-smart-asses - I cannot use DrakConf effectively because I can't even
read most Xscreens because of this problem. I'm posting this to the Newbie
list and not the expert list because I AM a newbie, but I am not an idiot. I
know how to search the net and RTFM but after about 6 hours of frustration I
post a question and the only response is to use an X app which I cannot even
use because of the horizontal lines. Good grief!

This is not your video card. It's the monitor you selected during your
install.

Establish the characteristics of your monitor (Horizondal and vertical
refresh rates etc)

Reboot and go to text mode (type 'linux 3' at the lilo prompt or select
'failsafe' from GRUB)

Log on as root and run 'Xconfigurator' and select your monitor (if it's
listed) else a monitor which matches yours.

Cheers

Sorry, I didn't realise that before when I suggested that you use
DrakConf (stupid me!). Try XF86Setup or Xconfigurator from a console

Hi Bob,

If you are running KDE2, the themes aren't there anymore - KDE2 doesn't do
themes as it did in KDE1 :-(
There is a tool to import old themes (found in Configuration -> Other ->
Legacy Theme Importer) , but I couldn't get it to work yet.

There are supposed to be KDE2 themes showing up on themes.org, but I haven't
checked in a while.

Could be video, hard drive, cd, something on the motherboard. I would sugest
you just substitute another video card, if you have one and see if that gets

Have you tried using "sndconfig" on your sound card? That card is definitly
supported, and it's odd that it doesn't work.

2000-08-14 Thread John Eichenberger

My modem is listed (in Win98 as):
   Class: Modem
   Device: SupraExpress 56i SP V.90 SUP2720
   Resources:
 IRQ: 03
 I/O: 02F8h-02FFh

Class: Sound, video and game controllers
Device: Wave Device for Voice Modem
   No resources used.

My sound card is listed as:
Device: Creative Labs IDE controller-- I wish I knew how to
disable this part of it
   Resources:
 IRQ: 10
 I/O: 0168h-016Fh
 I/O: 036Eh-036Fh

Class: Sound, video and game controllers
Device: Creative 3D Stereo Enhancement Technology
   Resources:
 I/O: 0100h-0100h

Class: Sound, video and game controllers
   Device: Gameport Joystick
   Resources:
 I/O: 0200h-0207h

Class: Sound, video and game controllers
Device: Creative Advanced Wave Effects Synthesis for AWE 32
   Resources:
 I/O: 0620h-0623h
 I/O: 0A20h-0A23h
 I/O: 0E20h-0E23h

Class: Sound, video and game controllers
Device: Creative Sound Blaster 16 Plug and Play
   Resources:
 IRQ: 05
 I/O: 0220h-022Fh
 I/O: 0330h-0331h
 I/O: 0388h-038Bh
 DMA: 01
 DMA: 05

This system has been problematic with everything I have put into it. I
don't think the hardware in it is terribly compatible with each other. But
I haven't quite put my finger on why just yet. I have a separate IDE
interface from the one on the Sound Blaster card. I don't even understand
why the audio card has an IDE interface. I think most every hardware
resource is consumed, and other than the IDE "conflict" I don't see any
conflicts. The IDE interface on the Sound Blaster is disabled in my Win98
setup which is how I get by with that (I think).

Open a terminal, and as root run 'sndconfig', that should get your card
going. Worked for me!

try that. I'm just tossing idea's out of my head.

Re: [newbie] New Install LILO Problems

2000-06-09 Thread Greg DeYoung

Actually, I don't have a problem with SC, because I didn't install LILO into the MBR.
SC boots up fine and finds the Linux ext partition, and can boot to that partition.
The problem that I'm having is the LILO boot. I saw that someone else on the newbie
list out there is having the same problem, and has close to the same configuration. I
wonder if this is a bug with 7.1? The main problem is LILO it starts and prints the L
of LILO and then a continous 10 10 10 10 10 10 ect. Please help.

Thanks,
Greg DeYoung

Re: [newbie] New Install LILO Problems

If you have the boot utility disk (you should have made it installing system
commander ) just boot from the floppy. This will tell SC the computer's new
configuration and SC will be reset. This way you will see if there is any
problem with LILO or GRUB and if the partitions are bootable.

this may seem like i have no clue what i am talking about, but i had a
similar problem when i set up linux on my computer here at my college.
i asked around and the networking guys said the couldn't "officially"
give me support for Linux, just windoze and mac os. but one of the guys
told me on the side that when i install it, make sure i select it to be
a DHCP supporting install. maybe thats part of it.. i realy dunno
tho... *shrug*.. just trying to help.

What is the output of dmesg?
also /var/log/messages might offer some help.
You might also try using linuxconf to set hostname

Subject: [newbie] New install... Network problems

Hello, I have a problem that nothing I have seems to explain...
I have a linux box running on an Asus P2B-S motherboard with 32 meg of
memory, Celeron 300a, Diamond Stealth 2000 video card (Pci with standard S3
chipset.), 8 Gig hard drive, LinkSys 10/100 Network card and a CD rom.
I have Linux Mandrake 6.1 installed on my machine and am trying to get it to
work on my network.

My original plans were to get this Linux box up and running as a Server for
my 2 Win 98Se machines. Internet server as well. I recompiled the kernal
(2.2.13) with the tulip driver included with the network card. I was able to
get into the Linux Config utility from the KDE desktop. At the time It
showed as one of four adaptors and said it was inactive. I told it to be
active upon boot and to activate it at that time.
I then later tried to get into it and it would no longer show it as one of
the adaptors and only showed four adaptors. I did NOT add an IP address to
the card at the time. (The other three "adaptor" slots are empty)
The card is recognized when Linux first boots up and the eth0 shows up in my
/Proc directory.

What do I need to do to make it show up on my net work?
I currently have my Win98se machines setup as peer to peer and see no reason
to change that. I currently am using the Win98se internet sharing but I have
to have my main win 98 machine online to use it. I would much rather get
linux up and running full time and let it connect when necissary and then no
longer use internet sharing with my win98Se machine. Eventually I expect to
put my system on the net when I can do so cheaply.
I am assuming the SAMBA utilities will get me there and I am sure its
something real simple to setup. Without swimming through tons of man pages
etc can someone tell me what I need to do to get it to recognize and be
recognized on my network?

I should also be able to use the net from my linux machine at the moment
through my Win98se machine with internet sharing active shouldn't I?
I may get my linux machine hooked up to my ISP tomorrow so I can try linking
up that way as well.

I also tried changing my HOSTNAME but I did it from within linux config and
it doesnt seem to like it much. Says something about unknown name HOSTNAME =
myhost.com. Just trying to change the name the machine has.
Thanks for any help!

I used to run Linux way back before it was a 1.0 version and it sure has
come a long way. Eventually I expect to have numerous computers on my little
network. (well one for every member of my family and extra hookups for those
nights friends come over and wanna play games etc.)

Thanks again.

Re: [newbie] New install on second hd -- advice please.

1999-09-27 Thread Darcy & Emily Baston

I dedicated Mandrake to the second hard disk all to itself,
and partitioned that same dedicated hard drive into 2 parts, for Linux and swap
respectively. Use the DiskDruid software that's available during the
installation and it works perfectly. Well, did for me anyway! LILO puts its info
in the boot record of your choice (1st or second HD)

  hd -- advice please.

  Hello,
I am trying to install MDK 6.0 on second hard
drive. It is a Western Digital 6.4 Gig hd. The first hard drive is a Maxtor
4.2 Gig. Does part of MDK 6.0 have to be on first drive? I have Partion Magic
4.01 so moving partions around is easy enough, it also comes with BootMagic. I
could use BootMagic or LILO as OS loader.
Currently have 1st drive partioned c: and d: with
Win98. I have second drive as one partion as yet I will make at least these
partions / , /home , and /swap. Any others I should make? Which partion set as
  active? Primary or logical?
If there is a How to could someone point me the
  way?

  Any advice greatly appreciated.

  TIA
  dkunz

Checking out ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux/docs/HOWTO/mini/Partition would
be a good start. Additionally, posting to a Linux list in HTML is sure to
raise a few hackles. It would be a good idea to go into OE's preferences
and change that option.

During the install, use Disk Druid to delete the FAT32 partition. Then
create a swap partition equal to your memory size, and a "/" Linux native
partition (select growable to use the remainder of the disk).
