Re: re. [newbie] StarOffice & Mandrake7
P.S. My Osborne ran as quick and more stable that Win98. It didn't do as much and was MUCH less infuriating. Now, if I could get Linux configured so that I could get on with it. It's like my first evening working with WordStar: work five minutes, and then read thirty minutes to find out either how to undo a mistake I made or how to do the next thing. No, linux is taking much more time. WordPerfect and StarOffice won't work together; I've given up on StarOffice. Now I'm having trouble configuring sound. Lothar or sndconfig both error out with an error in an isapnp call. "Don't know what to do with (lines?) 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12, or 15 on or about line 453." "/etc/isapnp.conf:453 -- fatal no action taken" And that file shows failed on next boot. This if for a SoundBlaster AWE64. I have more research to do. -Gary-

Garyso do you really need Star Office? I ask because whatever anomaly is causing this is getting you down and maybe a compromise is the best way out. Wasn't recofiguring X enough to fix things. Did you look for damage to the /etc/X11/XF86Config file? Possibly backing this file up before installing and restoring it when problems occur? I knew that the solutions I suggest are not remedies, but patches and work-a-rounds. sorry I can't be a better help. Alan P.S. Garywhat does "reload Linux" mean exactly? Install of what, gave an '"install failed" at about 80% complete'? Re: re. [newbie] StarOffice & Mandrake7
I've registered my copy of Word Perfect, and with my video properly configured again tried to install Star Office when Word Perfect was already in place, and it still corrupts Xwindows to the extent that I have to reload Linux to fix it. Summarizing many installs of Linux and WP/SO: 1) generic video or fully configured makes no difference, 2) whether Word Perfect has had its registration number entered or not makes no difference, 3) hdparm either default or c3d1, and desktop configuration makes no difference, 4) whether other RPMs have been installed or not makes no difference, and 5) the order of WP and SO makes no difference. The last couple of times I've gotten "install failed" at about 80% complete, which I had not gotten earlier, and I don't know what is responsible for that change. In all cases, everything seems fine until a reboot. I can't think of anything that might be responsible for this failure to get both WP and SO installed. I've spent a couple of weeks going through the various permutations, and the only conclusion I can come to is that this just isn't going to work for me, though I was encouraged and gladdened by others of you successfully installing them both. Thank you all for your assistance and your suggestions. -Gary-
Re: re. [newbie] StarOffice & Mandrake7
It seems to be scrambling the configuration of Xwindows itself. On 5/4 I wrote: "After 6 full installs, I now know what was corrupting my X. It was not desktop configuration, hdparm, video setup (as generics), or any of the other RPMs I loaded from Mandrake 7 Deluxe, (modem & sound not configured) --Star Office so corrupted X that it froze Linux during boot, while trying to switch over to graphical login. I had made many changes during the install, and fully recreated everything (except for the one thing I was testing) when reloading. During only one iteration was I able to get a (frozen) console screen, which showed these messages: bad length in Geometry, output file /var/tmp/server-0.xkm removed, couldn't load XKB keymap, Font Trans Socket UNIX Connect: can't connect: errno-111, failed to set default font path 1unix/:-1, and fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed'. The Star Office RPM appeared to run and end normally." As I indicated in the message you responded to, I have continued testing with an extremely simple configuration, and I have learned that it's the combination of WordPerfect and StarOffice that is causing the problems. I have no other problems (that I know of, since sound is still not configured, and my modem was found and works however no programs are setup actually use it yet--I'v spent so much time with this...). Install does not correctly detect my graphics card, however what it installs is completely servicable except for the low refresh rate. I believe when video and monitor are correct I have the same result (frankly I've done this so many times I can't remember). I'm glad to know that these two can co-exist -- would the fact that I haven't gotten a registration number for Word Perfect make any difference [I've been spending all of my time reading "newbie" and doing these installs]? I wouldn't think so. -Gary-

Gary, I would hate to tell you this but I have installed and still use WP and SO together on the same machine, same Linux distro without a problem. Gary Prichard This is strange to me. I have a machine that runs both WP8 and SO5.1. And yes, in Mandrake 7.02. But I did not do anything with RPM's on these programs, I downloaded the tarballs and installed them from there. Perhaps that would make a difference?
