RE: Vista Ent Virtual Licensing

2008-05-05 Thread gsweers
Great question, I know I get like 500 MAK licenses for that purpose.
The Vol Licensing phone desk just told me to call in and they can reset
the counters for that. Never going to be putting 4 instances on our 170
PC's at one client so we have plenty of licenses at this point.

I would call the help desk and ask them specifically about the
portability issue, but I would not see any problem with doing this.

Does anybody know what the deal is with the vista licensing.

We have allot of QA and Dev guys who we are looking at upgrading to
Vista Ent as part of our Enterprise Agreement. These guys all use a
number of VM's on their machine for testing purposes. I understand that
we are allowed to run up to 4 vista vm's on each of their desktops as
part of this however there is one major flaw. After testing the
activation of one of these vm's it does in fact decrement our licence
counter. Meaning that once we have activated the number of licenses we
have available to us then bam.. no more licenses. Also im trying to work
out how this structure works with the portability of the vm's.

Anyone have any dealings with this I'd be interested to hear or any more
up to date information.

RE: Vista imaging

Michael,

I am trying to find some good docs on using ImageX, MDT 2008 and XP.
Most of my organizations will not be deploying Vista for at least a year

hand my junior admins while I am out of country to play with.

I admit it, it's too late in the evening, and I can't keep my eyes open

so far I read only Vista..

Two more days...vacation..two more days...vacation...two more

doesn't seem to be an issue (unless I missed something), but I still

can therefore be installed on the FE only ?

You can do this with the Microsoft supplied GPOs (use the Site To Zone

Do not edit the Default Domain Policy - create a new Domain policy for your
business, and put all your domain-wide policies in there. Why? Then you know
exactly what came "in the box" from Microsoft and what you've changed
subsequently. It will help with maintenance and troubleshooting.

I would always use a GPO over a batch file/logon script *if* they do the same
thing. It's really easy to model the net effect of GPOs on users and computers
using RSOP/GPMC. It's virtually impossible to model the effect of batch
scripts unless you have a unit test harness...

RE: .net 3.5 and Exchange 2003 OWA

2008-05-05 Thread Michael B. Smith
I don't understand the question.

OWA 2003 is a .Net 1.1 application. It does not use .Net 3.5. You cannot
remove .Net 1.1. That would be a breaking change.

In general, minimize the attack surface. Don't install what you don't need.

If you wanted to add rather than replace, this is merely a registry
setting. Adding all of monacocoach.com to your local intranet would
look like: (excuse silly outlook wrapping)

reg add
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\monacocoach.com" /v "*" /t REG_DWORD /d

So you could take that string and easily apply that in a policy without
replacing existing settings.

I am looking at SpiceWorks right now. It has extras (Helpdesk) that I
wouldn't use but the inventory looks great so far. Now I just need to

RE: Domain Admin monkey business

2008-05-05 Thread Christopher Boggs
Hopefully you've enabled directory service access auditing on the
DC's... You only need to look for success/failure of modify permissions
or modify owner...

http://mcpmag.com/features/article.asp?editorialsid=233

Relevant info about auditing is about halfway down...

Like the article says though, it doesn't track who was given access or
what access was given, it just says what object, who did it, and at what
time. Should be enough to figure it out, though.

Re: Multiple video cards

2008-05-05 Thread Phil Brutsche
Heh, many of the cheap video cards are exactly that: cheap. I would
expect very, very few to last long.

When I need more than 2 monitors on my workstations I find these are
some of my best bets:

nVidia NVS440 quad-head video card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133165

nVidia NVS290 PCI-E 1x dual-head video card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133211

nVidia NVS290 PCI-E 16x dual-head video card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133210

I have used the first two in several of our Dell Precision 380s and 390s
with good results.

The last one is the same card found in the newer Dell Precision T3400s,
IME they all Just Work in the older PCI-E Dells (including old OptiPlex
GX280s)

Sorry, I made an assumption when you said new mobo that it was a recent rev.
If it’s one of the early revs, then yes there will most likely be problems.
The new ones are all 5000p chipsets.

I’m trying to think of how to grab the chipset model from within windows, given
you only have RDP access…

Have you take the SN# of the server and called into HP Support or the Parts
Support or your Account rep and asked about it? With the SN# you can get that
info. You can get your SN# from the HP Mgmt Homepage->System Board.

The very first 380 G5's didnt support the QC's (5000 chipset versus 5000p I
guess). You also need a recent bios version. I had the first, and even with the
newest bios they didnt work :(

said it should be 436526-001. I don't have ilo access atm (not configured), I
only have rdp access.

Any ideas? I looked for an Intel Chipset identification util as the original
mobo should be a 5000 series and this one should be a 5000p but it doesn't seem
they make one for those series.

Any help would be great!

RE: Trusted Intranet Sites

2008-05-05 Thread Troy Meyer
You could use an adm if you wanted to, it all depends on how you want to run
things. I went the lazy route and just added a bat file into the user login
script in a GP (under User Config - Admin Templates - System - Logon - Run
these programs at user logon).

It checks a couple settings and then applies a couple registry settings so
stuff matches. Things like registry adds to HKCU are super fast and the user
doesn't even notice.

Phil,

If you wanted to add rather than replace, this is merely a registry
setting. Adding all of monacocoach.com to your local intranet would
look like: (excuse silly outlook wrapping)

reg add
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\monacocoach.com" /v "*" /t REG_DWORD /d

So you could take that string and easily apply that in a policy without
replacing existing settings.

I need to add an internal site to every user's Local Intranet sites. Is
there a simple way to do that with a GPO or even the Default Domain GPO,
since it applied to everyone?

I suspect a contractor brought in to cover while I was gone, but I'm
parsing logs now to see if I can determine that.

Fortunately, I syslog everything I can, so should be able to track it
down fairly quickly.

Yup, just did that and it is apparently from a 53xx server setup which they
claim is good for 54xx procs.
If I could just see what chipset it is from within windows :)
I know have ilo access, but it didnt suggest anything.

Thanks!

The new ones are all 5000p chipsets.

I’m trying to think of how to grab the chipset model from within windows, given
you only have RDP access…

Have you take the SN# of the server and called into HP Support or the Parts

info. You can get your SN# from the HP Mgmt Homepage->System Board.

said it should be 436526-001. I don't have ilo access atm (not configured), I
only have rdp access.

Any ideas? I looked for an Intel Chipset identification util as the original
mobo should be a 5000 series and this one should be a 5000p but it doesn't seem
they make one for those series.

Any help would be great!

RE: HP DL380 G5

2008-05-05 Thread Joseph L. Casale
I had the old part number and ordered two 5405's. Bios was most recent.
Installed them and upon booting it said "You need the 5000p chipset to support
these procs, Halting..."

Got what I thought was the new mobo, and put the procs in, and it wouldn't even
boot? It does boot with the old 5110 proc though.

I think I have verified that the new mobo is correct. What's odd is that if
they shipped the old version by accident, I assume it should still post and
indicate it is halting like my original did? I think something else is wrong
since it wont even post?

By OU delegation, are you referring to the delegation wizard, or just
the ability to set permissions on specific OU's? Either would suffice
to allow someone the ability to perform such actions, whether or not
they were a member of the account operators group. Take a look at the
advanced permissions of one of the user accounts they can modify, sort
by name, and see if either their names or a group they are in shows up
with permissions.

Digging deeper, I'm noticing that an ATI card shows in the PCI slot in the

Too bad I'm having such difficulties getting the system to boot with the

You could use SIW to get the Adobe license keys but I think you have to run
that interactively - and it's expensive for business use.

Well, actually there is two part numbers.
The very first 380 G5's didnt support the QC's (5000 chipset versus 5000p I
guess). You also need a recent bios version. I had the first, and even with the
newest bios they didnt work :(

Spare Part #:

436526-001

Non Quad Core Spare Part #:

407749-001

This is what Iam told by HP...

You have to enter the license numbers that you have, number of copies, etc
into GLPI, it just inventories the instances of that particular software
that are actually installed.

Sherry,

In fact I'm testing these days GLPI. However, I
though that people used GLPI for getting the license
numbers of the software installed but after importing
the software from one testing machine running Windows
XP I don't see any license numbers (apart of the OS).

Is it possible to get that license numbers installed

RE: Multiple video cards

2008-05-05 Thread lists
Well you could download everything you need from Dell before
uninstalling the card. That way when the card wants to install you can
direct the installation to the software you just downloaded. And it's
just as easy to cancel the card installation at boot time. The card
will simply be running VGA drivers until the drivers are installed.

Cheers.

Was it carrier specific? What carrier(s) are you using? Usually we

The built-in card will most likely install itself silently, in the
background. But you should then be able to update the driver with the
one you get from Dell.

By uninstall I mean using the Control Panel to uninstall the card and
it's drivers. The card remains in the box. Once you've uninstalled
and rebooted, go to Dell.com and using the service tag of the machine,
find the right software/drivers and install.

What precisely to you mean by "uninstall"? From the control panel, or
physically removing the (non-OEM) card?

A while ago, I tried doing the "uninstall" from the control panel. I
"unistalled" both the OEM NVS-285 as well as one which (finally!)
appeared
as "unknown". At re-boot, the OEM NVS-285 was none-the-less up and
running without asking if I wanted to install it.

Well, I have a new collection of both NVidia and Jaton drivers to go
play
with.

Thanks again!

~ Upgrade to Next Generation Ant

HP DL380 G5

2008-05-05 Thread Joseph L. Casale
I am trying to deduce if a new mobo in a DL380 G5 supports Quad Cores, it is
said it should be 436526-001. I don't have ilo access atm (not configured), I
only have rdp access.

Any ideas? I looked for an Intel Chipset identification util as the original
mobo should be a 5000 series and this one should be a 5000p but it doesn't seem
they make one for those series.

Any help would be great!

RE: Multiple video cards

2008-05-05 Thread RichardMcClary
Thanks...

What precisely to you mean by "uninstall"? From the control panel, or
physically removing the (non-OEM) card?

A while ago, I tried doing the "uninstall" from the control panel. I
"unistalled" both the OEM NVS-285 as well as one which (finally!) appeared
as "unknown". At re-boot, the OEM NVS-285 was none-the-less up and
running without asking if I wanted to install it.

Well, I have a new collection of both NVidia and Jaton drivers to go play
with.

Thanks again!

RE: Multiple video cards

2008-05-05 Thread lists
I manage many hundreds of Dells and have seen similar issues with MS
Updates vs updates found at the Dell site. Try uninstalling the video
card and rebooting; then install the card and use software only from
Dell. Subsequently don't automatically allow all updates from MS to
that machine(s) for a while and see if that solves the problem.

Cheers.

Subject: Multiple video cards

HELP

This has just started happening the past two weeks...

Our typical setup is a Dell PWS-390, which comes OEM with an NVidia NVS
285 (runs two monitors). We need three or four monitors. We could not
get any ATI cards to give us a usable system, but we found a dual-port
(VGA) card with NVidia 5200 chips on it that works - until lately!

The scenario goes, a machine will crash. On startup, the black with WIN
logo will show, but the 3 blue square moving across the screen will hang
and remain hung.

We pull the added NVidia 5200 card, and it boots. We put in a new
NVidia 5200 card, and the system will not even acknowledge there is a
new piece of hardware in the system...

This is despite deleting ALL video cards in the device manager, doing a
"scan for hardware changes", or even trying to run the Control Panel
"New Hardware Wizard" applet.

I can put in an ATI card, and it will work once. On successive reboots,
that too will hang with the 3 squares (not) moving across the Windows
logo screen.

While I'm hunting for solutions, any ideas why a hardware setup which
has worked for over a year would suddenly fail completely? I have
visions of, while I'm either on vacation or at a networking "boot camp",
all of our systems crapping out on us one-at-a-time.

Well, time to go a-hunting! Thanks...

Visio, Notepad, Word, or SYDI does a pretty nice job...

Server Inventory Software

2008-05-05 Thread Sauvigne, Craig M
I am looking for a software package to maintain the inventory of my
servers. What I want is something that can store server name, server
function (DHCP, DC, DNS, etc.), IP address(es), hardware stats (CPUs,
HDs, etc), and more. I would also like it to have something like a notes
field so I can save information on any problems, configuration changes,
hardware failures, etc.

This does not have to automatically get the info although that would be
a nice feature.

This is something that I would normally consult with our programmers on
but they are very busy right now. Does anyone have any info on a good
package to do that? I have checked a few online but wanted to see what
actual users think.

Thanks!

Avanquest - Database Professional?

2008-05-05 Thread David Mazzaccaro
Hi,
Anybody out there use this program?
It looks to be a basic (but pretty popular) contact manager for 1 or 2
users to share.
It's only $50.00... I have 1 salesperson who needs something to keep
track of leads, prospects, etc.
And I am looking for something simple.
Wondering if anyone has any +/- experience with this?
Thanks,
Dave

Re: file name length

2008-05-05 Thread Kevin Lundy
That was what I remembered Rene. I must have been tired on Friday when I
sent that, as I had a window open with the output of dir /? in it and didn't
see that option.

However, I think I'll use Kurt's script - that I didn't even have to remind
him to send this AM. Thanks Kurt.

Group policy oddness

2008-05-05 Thread Gavin Wilby
Hi Guys,

I am a bit stuck in what would at 1st glance be a simple enough thing.

I have somehow on my own server managed to break group policy - none of them
work at all.

If I try and edit any of the policies I get the following error:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gavsta/2466921945/

Now I *can* traverse to:
\\server\sysvol\domain.local\Policies
and
I can open everything in there. However the policies seem to want to come
from here:
\\domain.local\*sysvol\domain.local\Policies
* which is what I find odd as it resolves to the same thing, however I
*cant* drill into any of the shares at this level, although they look the
same.

Can anyone shed any light on whats happened?

Subject: file name length

We are having a problem with one of our archive tools (Disk Extender). Better
said, Disk Extender has identified a problem where some directory and file
paths are >256 characters. I thought that was a hard limit in Windows so not
sure how they got created.

Does anyone know of a tool, or way to script, that will give us a report of at
least directories that exceed some limit? We have about 4 TB of unstructured
files, so we don't want to see every file that exceeds the length, but a list
of every directory path over say 240 characters would be a good start.

I thought the good old dir command used to have a switch to only display
directories and not files but don't see it anymore. I was just going to pipe
dir commands to files and then import and sort.
