LocalSystem and Network Service both present the same on the network.
Local Service is anonymous.

Hmmm. I admit I've never *tested* the LocalService account to

The SCSI initiator negotiates any speed faster than "asynchronous"
(dog slow), so in theory, the drives should work. The server will
negotiate Ultra 2 and the drive's SCSI interface will run at that
speed.

That said, occasionally manufactures would assume you'd run at a
certain speed and their SCSI implementation would puke if they didn't
get it. This is/was generally more common with tape drives.

Re: older HP server

2009-06-22 Thread Len Hammond
You're right about it being out of warranty. But getting parts is not a
problem - they are all over the web, and most of them are reasonably priced.
For a server that is not in a "mission critical" role, a certain amount of
downtime is acceptable to some clients. It's a "risk v. cost" equation. It
wouldn't fit every situation but there are times to deploy a device like
this, admittedly, not very many, but. And if it works for a while, this
client might see the value of a newer machine and several months from now
they expect the cash flow to improve. so who knows - it might be the step
that causes them to take it to the next level.

None of the converters I could find would touch a .imap file. Every
import/export tool I tried including the MS ones require access to the IMAP
server.

So I cheated. I renamed all the .imap files to .eml files and I'm dragging
them into OE and will burn to a PST. Sometimes you just gotta cheat...

Recently I picked up an older HP Netserver LH3. It has several Ultra 2 SCSI
drives in it. Can I put in U3 or U160 drives and have them work? I know they
are more expensive but I have several on hand with out a home. If I bump up the

machine account to the share perms solved it.

It means the NT machine account is now a member of that group.
Nothing more, nothing less.

Machine accounts are just user accounts, as far as the NT security
model is concerned. If the machine is "FOO" and your domain is
"NWEA", then the NT machine account is "NEWA\FOO$". The dollar sign
means it is hidden.

Computer startup and shutdown scripts run in the context of the
machine account when it comes to accessing network resources. That's
the major practical application that I'm aware of.

> Accounts logged in as “Local Service” to interact with my machine?

Nope, that would be "FOO\LocalService", a different account and a
different security authority. LocalService isn't supposed to have
access to any network resources.

Now, theoretically, it may be that LocalService has sufficient
privileges to hijack the machine account and impersonate it.
Anything's possible with root access.

> Does it mean anyone logged onto that machine would have
> local admin rights to my PC?

Definitely not! The NT machine account has nothing to do with the
logged on user.

Just like your user account has rights and permissions to resources, so do
computer accounts. And it depends on the credentials being passed. So if
the computer credentials are being passed to some process and that
computer account has permissions or rights, it will authenticate
successfully.

If I add a machine to a group (say, my SMS server as a local admin to my
desktop), what am I exactly enabling? Accounts logged in as "Local
Service" to interact with my machine? Does it mean anyone logged onto that
machine would have local admin rights to my PC? I'm thinking no, but I
wouldn't bet my security on it. This is where my knowledge of NT security
gets a little fuzzy.

I should know this, but I don't....

2009-06-22 Thread David Lum
If I add a machine to a group (say, my SMS server as a local admin to my
desktop), what am I exactly enabling? Accounts logged in as "Local Service" to
interact with my machine? Does it mean anyone logged onto that machine would
have local admin rights to my PC? I'm thinking no, but I wouldn't bet my
security on it. This is where my knowledge of NT security gets a little
fuzzy...

RE: Cell phone allocation and turnover?

2009-06-22 Thread Sam Cayze
I disinfect everything here. Keyboards, cell phone, mice, laptops
before a turnover.

With our cell phones, at least Treos, I sometimes replace the
shell/housing of the phone with a new one if it is pretty beat up from
the previous owner. Maybe it's just me, but I don't like giving people
beat up equipment.

Just wondering how other people handle cell phone allocation in regards
to employee turnover?
I've had some concerns over personal hygiene when an employee is given a
hand-me-down cell phone to use.
When an employee leaves, does someone else (either their replacement or
another coworker) get their old cell phone?
Does the phone go through a disinfecting process? Or is a new phone
always ordered and the old one disposed of?
I guess the argument can be made for desk phones, keyboards, mice,
chairs, etc... but I've personally only had complaints about cell
phones.

Probably because you don't see people using their keyboard in the
bathroom!
LOL

Well, that's not a problem here as we don't provide cell phones for
people. J Where I used to work, when phones were provided for us, I seem
to recall that we recycled the phones (I wasn't involved - the Executive
Assistant to the CEO handled the phones) and just handed them to the
next person without any real disinfecting, etc.

My suggestion would be to make sure they were completely powered off
(i.e. remove the battery) and then spray lightly with Lysol and let it
dry.

I guess the argument can be made for desk phones, keyboards, mice,
chairs, etc... but I've personally only had complaints about cell
phones.

Probably because you don't see people using their keyboard in the
bathroom!

Re: Bing vs. Google (a side-by-side framed web site)

2009-06-22 Thread Jonathan Link
When I first heard of the name for MS's "new" "decision" engine I thought of
Groundhog Day when Stephen Tobolowsky's
(http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0864997/) character
says bing after every right answer.
The character was designed to be harmless, but annoying. Good job

Re: Bing vs. Google (a side-by-side framed web site)

2009-06-22 Thread Micheal Espinola Jr
I have to admit, I think they chose the name poorly. Google sounded a bit
silly to begin with too, but "bing" is not a positive word association for
me.

I'd be really interested to know what research went into choosing this name
and what the results were. I'm certainly not the average user, but I'm
interested to know who is.

I wonder if this was chosen internally by Microsoft or one of their
marketing/ad agencies...

Interesting. I hadnt noticed anything like that. To be, they appear to be
rendering at roughly the same speed, and or a slight edge to the left frame
- which is Bing.

I still prefer Google's results so far for what I have used this for.

Can't update Acrobat administrative install to 9.1.2

2009-06-22 Thread Jim Dandy
I'm trying to add an update to my administrative install for Acrobat
Pro. I first made an administrative install for Acrobat Pro 9.0. I
then added the update AcroProStd910_T1T2_incr.msp to it with a command
of the form

  msiexec /a \\server\share\acropro.mis /p
c:\AcroProStd910_T1T2_incr.msp

I then applied AcrobatUpd911_all_incr.msp in the same way. After that I
tried to add AcrobatUpd912_all_incr.msp in the same way. It appears to
start the update and then gives the following error:

Error 2602. The File table entry 'Annots.api_911' has no associated
entry in the media table.

I could install Acro Pro from the msi that was updated with
AcrobatUpd911_all_incr.msp (prior to applying
AcrobatUpd912_all_incr.msp) and it installs. I can then do an Adobe
update and update it to 9.1.2. So, I assume my admin install with 9.1.1
is OK. I just don't seem to be able to update my admin install to
9.1.2. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks.

APC netbotz DVR options

2009-06-22 Thread Andy Shook
Happy Monday, list.

Does anyone have a Netbotz 400 series (rack mount) archiving video to a DVR?
If so, could you give me some details on the DVR. Otherwise, if you're doing
this with another solution, I'd like to know that as well as I'm not married to
APC for this...

TIA,

Shook

RE: Slightly OT Cisco ASA book recommendation

2009-06-22 Thread Rick Berry
Relatively new title on amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Cisco-Configuration-Networking-Professionals-Library/dp/0071622691/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1245679733&sr=1-2

Richard Deal has written a ton of prior Cisco stuff. This one is
brand-spanking-new I think, I have no insight on quality.

I got that book as well, it is decent.
Nothing beats the pdf's for command reference though, they are actually really
good with examples, between that and the book (and some net searches) you
should be good.

Shane,
I've got this Cisco Press book that covers 6 & 7 and it's a good reference
book, as it gives to the commands for both versions side by side...

I know this is a bit off topic,

But does anyone recommend a good book on the Cisco ASA's?

Thanks

RE: Happy Fathers Day

2009-06-22 Thread Christopher Bodnar
On the topic of fatherhood. I just got this yesterday as a Father's day
present:

http://www.amazon.com/Home-Game-Accidental-Guide-Fatherhood/dp/039306901X/
ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8

&s=books&qid=1245674204&sr=8-1

I was unfamiliar with Mr. Lewis up until this point. Probably the funniest
book I've read in the last 10 years.
