I am bring up Hyper-V at the moment. Some of the things I have noticed
are unlike both Virtual Server and the free VMWare all of the interface
is on one location. It is smoother to work with and look at the
configurations of each machine. Changes between Virtual Server and
Hyper-V include all of the files needed by a VM is in one folder unlike
VS which has them spread around. I have not tried Snapshots yet as I am
still testing. I have not tried to do Snapshots in the VMWare product,
in fact I don't know if it is even possible. I have seen that exporting
and importing took a little reading to see what was happening and then
some experimenting but the process is nice. I would have preferred if I
was allowed to rename a machine during the export or import process but
I guess for free and using the GUI I get what I paid for. If you have
worked with either of the free products you will have a good idea of the
steps needed to do an import with a name change. All of the logs are
easy to find and look at although I still prefer the log style of 2003.

Might also want to take a look at Citrix XenServer. Citrix licensed the
opensource Xen hypervisor, and have released as a commercial product with
proper management console, virtual machine moving (ala vMotion) and so on.
Aggressively priced at around $900 per server, they're trying to push in on the

I suspect it would be exactly the same speed using either Virtual Centre or
System Center Virtual Machine Manager. You just grab your template and away you
go...

Building a VM using PXE will be slightly problematic using Hyper-V, because the
new "synthetic" 10gbps NICs don't show up until you install the Integration
Services. SO you need to use a low performance Legacy Nic, and then swap them
out after the server is built.

There is public information (e.g. max ram supported, max CPUs supported) etc
available on the various vendor's websites.

If you want other information, it's probably not freely available (as I
mentioned, we have a detailed comparison between a number of virtualizaion
products - Hyper-V, ESX, Xen, Sun Containers etc), but I can't share it because
it's my company's IP, not mine.

If you have a specific area(s) you want looked up, I'm happy to do that though

Cheers

Hi Ken,
We just want to compared what can each VM solution do and what they cannot do.
Basically it is like a feature to feature comparison.
MS and VMWare will have their own marketing team to bash the other party up and
we would like to have a more independent and fair comparison.
Thanks.
Best Regards,
WY

I have a fairly detailed comparison, but it's our internal IP. Do you have
specific areas that you want compared?
