RE: VMware ESXi 3.5 On Dell 2550

2008-10-30 Thread Glen Johnson
As someone else already said, the VM doesn't see the actual hardware in
the host. That's why it's called "virtual". As far as the guest os is
concerned, the perc4 controller doesn't exist and the guest can't see
it.

The vm will see the buslogic or lsi controller that ESX emulates so one
of these would be what you select when installing the VM.
I also think someone said to use the LSI as the buslogic didn't work
with RHEL 4.
So when you partition the VM, choose the LSI, and then the RHEL install
should auto detect it.

The ESXi installation is not the issue (and the PERC 3D/I driver is
listed in
the HCL). It has been installed on the PE 2550 without any issue. The
issue
is the installation of a RHEL 4 VM. I need to know what driver to choose

from the list presented when installing RHEL 4 (is it the standard
aacraid or
megaraid/megaraid2 driver)? Or do I need a downloaded driver
specifically for
VMWare?

Am I missing something here. Its not so much that you cant install esx,
its that rhel wont see any storage right?

If you had hcl issues ESX would complain about not being able to finish
its install. Fwiw I have 3 2550's in my test esx lab and they work fine.

So if you open the vi client does the vmfs volume for your local storage
show up under the configuration/storage area? How big is it?

2008-10-30 Thread Robert Jackson
When initially creating the VM, I've selected the LSI Logic SCSI
controller
as suggested.

When installing the RHEL 4 O/S, I elected to let the installation select
the
appropriate hardware drivers for itself (in the past I've used 'linux
expert noprobe'
at the boot prompt and selected from the hardware list manually).

Lo-n-behold, the installation has got past the disk partitioning and is
actually
installing from the CD. Just need to wait and see if it'll boot once
finished!

The physical RAID controller has no relevance here. ESX does not
directly present it to VM's.

It sounds like RHEL 4 does not have a driver for the virtual SCSI
controller that ESX presenting to the virtual machine guest. If
ESXi is similar to the full ESX, there are two that it can
emulate: An old Buslogic design and an old LSI design. Try
switching the types and see if RHEL 4 gets any further.
