This is for a VMware ESX cluster, so iSCSI is the primary method of connecting
to it. I've used NFS with ESX clusters as well, but it's just not as fast as
iSCSI, and I need fast...

I will look into that - I'm not sure how that would help, though, if each
controller port is isolated and connected to it's own set of disks...

Thanks for the links and background - RAID-Z2 does seem like a good choice.

Mhh, I am currently on my primary box, which is an AMD based Laptop. I

I think parts of this thread stayed on gmane.editors.vim or at least I
thought I saw a post here somewhere that asked me to post my vimrc.

In case anyone is still willing to help figure this out.

When I start vim something in .vimrc or a plugin is apparently turning
off my syn settings.

If I do `vim .bashrc' I see no syntax highlighting. Yet if I
manually source ~/.vimrc then my syntax highlight appears.

The last setting in .vimrc is `set ruler' and the ruler does appear so
I know vimrc is being sourced on startup.

All this is discussed in the thread of course but that is a short
summary.

Here is the vimrc file:

I hope this hasn't been beat to death here... googling around I'm not
finding clear evidence indicating there is somekind of sensor pkg that
can tell hdd and cpu temps.

Maybe something along the line of lm_senors in the linux world.

I carved a home made fan port in the door of my pc to blow directly
over the 4 hdd that seem too crowed and seem to throw some heat to the
feel. The fan is mounted exteral 120mm very quiet... Id like to see
effect it has.

Is there something available or some existing commands that tap into
S.M.A.R.T info? Or anything at all that can tell temperatures of hdd?

Another way to go at is to think... what does common sense dictate.

I too stumbled around on the passwrd stuff for a time.

The release notes is NOT a good place for that kind of info. Although

I am not worried about the onboard graphics as a graphics card is not that
expensive, Radeon is not as well supported as Nvidia chipset.
My big question is if the AMD 790 Northbridge and SB750 southbridge chip sets
are supported as that will determine Network/SATA/USB support.

I find myself in the very same situation. My intention is to buy a 790GX based

enough 2D/3D power for my needs). More specifically I am looking into buying a

Re: [osol-discuss] liveCD login and password

2009-03-15 Thread Jeremy Huddleston

Thanks.

But I would argue that you actually *DO* need it in "good"
conditions. If you choose the console boot option rather than
graphical, you need it. Also, if you choose the graphical option with
the liveCD, you have no way of shutting down your system without the
password. Shutdown from within gnome just logs you out (and then what
are you supposed to do from there with no login/password).

Having this on a buried errata page is bad. It should be printed on
the CD case and clearly visible when you download the liveCD.

Thanks again,
Jeremy

Actually NFS would be a much more elegant and simple solution, if your clients
are NFS capable, even for example for database workloads (did you know that
Oracle has a built-in NFS client/accelerator of her own?)

Good approach. Try to configure MPxIO, so you have load balancing and
multipathing over both controllers. See http://docs.sun.com/ for details on
how to configure MPxIO.

Yes, this will give you the best ZFS performance.

RAID-Z. Actually, in your case, it should be RAID-Z2. As to why, read below...

Good question, and the following might help you:

"When to (and not to) use RAID-Z"
http://blogs.sun.com/roch/entry/when_to_and_not_to

> Anything else that I should be aware of?

Yes; As I've written above, you probably should implement RAID-Z2, which is a
variation of RAID-Z, but with double parity. You will of course lose one
additional drive, but at 400GB a piece, can you really risk being without
protection for that long?

400GB takes a while to sync. Ideally, if you can afford it, you should
configure RAID-Z2 with a hot spare, so that you can lose a total of three
drives before being out of service.

Hi Andre, sorry, after a night of reading the first 400 pages of
"Learning Shell Programming in 24 hours" I am exhausted now and power
myself down in a minute, I just saw your msg. before I closed my mail
session. So I don't check any detail. But in a quick guess I would say
chances are it might be remotely related to what I wrote about last
year:

http://mail.opensolaris.org/pipermail/xwin-discuss/2008-August/002159.html

?

UPDATE: NO! It looks like a pretty different issue.
In your case it appears, as if the 2nd core has not been correctly
initialized indeed (or as if the 2nd core has been shut down /
disabled).
Could it be that the CPUID of your CoreDuo2 2.4GHz chip is just too
brand new, and hence not in the kernel's cpu-identification code yet?

The CPU identification detection mechanism code code can be tricky, I
recall that it has been a bit difficult to make qemu-system-x86_64 be
recognized as AMD64-capable 64bit cpu at first (by any Solaris 10 /11
kernel), Solaris only saw it as 32 bit 686. The Linux kernel does not
have so sophisticated checks and recognized it from the outset on
(also due to the fact, that most qemu.org developers still use linUX
as their primary devel platform).
But Juergen Keil soon found a fix for Solaris, back in October 2006
(for exact details and the files involved see qemu-discuss archives).

Still only 1 cpu showing with snv_109 on intel badaxe 2 with quad core? Can
anyone offer any guidance on this. This occurs in the EON RAM based image list
above. Any help is greatly appreciated.
