Re: Putting Vinyl Studio Pro Through Its Paces
The talk about preamps reminds me of a question I've been meaning to ask. I have a turntable and a preamp which I need to use to get vinyl into a PC and I'm getting 60-cycle hum. The preamp was an old Radioshack model. I can use a filter to kill the hum, but 1. is that a reasonable thing to do in the first place, and, 2. what would people suggest as a reasonable cost method to not have the hum at all? Btw, be looking forward to hearing about the software. Thanks. - Original Message - From: "Dane Trethowan" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Wednesday, September 21, 2016 12:34 PM Subject: Putting Vinyl Studio Pro Through Its Paces Yep, will be doing that this weekend, have some lost 45’s bought from Vinyl Australia to sample and I’ve got the old Aiwa Turntable prepared and ready, have one of the computers here connected to the line-out of the Rotal Amp which has a truly superb Fono stage built-in. I have both the Mac and Windows versions of Vinyl Studio Pro so it will be interesting to see which I get better access to, the Mac or the Windows version, at this early stage they both seem rather equal. ** Those of a positive and enquiring frame of mind will leave the rest of the halfwits in this world behind.

I very much dislike coiled cords. I have a set of earphones with one and would cheerfully toss the phones if I could find something with a straight cord good enough to replace them. - Original Message - From: "JOHN RIEHL" To: "'PC Audio Discussion List'" Sent: Friday, September 16, 2016 9:57 PM Subject: RE: The Best $150 Over-Ear Headphones | The Wirecutter I have been buying and using the MDR-7506 headphones for years; they are a fine choice. The ear cups on the older models did not hold up well but that's not true of the newer versions. One good thing about the sony MDR-7506 headphones is that they have a heavy-duty cord (it's one of those spiral cords); the drawback is that the cord is somewhat heavy and makes the headphones feel a bit heavier. Also, they can get uncomfortable after 5-6 hours of continuous use. But I agree with the model; they are a really good headphone choice for a very reasonable price. I'm getting the impression that function keys start you in whatever function you want. The problem for me at this time is that when I start NBR, I get what looks like a splash screen and the only way I can punch through it is to pick the option presented by Windows when it asks me what I want to do such as play cd in WMP, etc. I can pick that and then the f keys let me go wherever I want, but I resent it. I'm playing with the trial copy. I don't want to buy the full package with lots of software I don't want to use. I will look at Andrea's suggestions and see what's easiest to use. I'm willing to poke around, but, so far, I'm only finding software that doesn't do the meta data acquisition too well. I'm getting use results from Express Rip. The one thing I like about that program is that I can rip a cd to 1 track instead of the 99 that some of my audio books have and I would prefer to avoid that. It will check first to be sure it was not already ripped. You can also specify what type of files will be created on that tab. This works good if you are ripping a bunch of them at once. If you don't want to rip automatically, make sure the associated checkbox is not cheched. When you insert a CD, you should be focused on the "Now Playing" tab of Windows Media Player. If you are not on that tab, pressing CONTROL-3 should bring you there. Once the CD is playing, you should find a "Rip CD" button by tabbing around that dialog. Hello Alexandra: Older CD players normally do not play MP3 files, newer ones do. CDs have large files with the file extension .cda and when you copy them with Exact Copy, they are copied to the blank CD in the same format. In format .cda, a song normally occupies over 30 Megs, sometimes 50 Megs or higher, so only 15 or 20 songs fit in a CD, for it has a capacity of 700Megs. When we use a program to "rip" songs from the CD, that normally refers to converting them to a different format. Format can be "lossless" as is the case of for instance, the files with extension .wav, which retain the same quality and also occupy lots of room. There are many audio file formats, including some less known that are also losseless and occupy about half the room of a .wav, but there is always the trade-off of where to play it. Normally when you rip songs from a CD, you convert them to the MP3 format, that is with file extensions .mp3. The MP3 files occupy much less space and thus you can fit many more in a CD, perhaps 100 or more songs in a single CD with a 700 Megs capacity. MP3 files also come in different qualities, depending on bitrate and sample rate. Most people say the "CD quality" is 128K bitrate and 44100 sample rate, but while the sound approaches the quality of a .cda it is not quite the same. It is a trade-off, but MP3 files are very common and play in all modern CD players. You could use higher bitrates, up to 320K and they will sound a little better still, with larger file size. In summary, when you "copy" or "rip" a CD, you must select "Audio Cd" or "Data CD" and the former refers to .cda files, the latter to the format of your choice, MP3 being the most common. Now, if you want to rip CDs into "Data Cds" in formats such as .wav or .mp3, the simplest program to do it is called "Singe." It will do either CDs or DVDs automatically, it determines what it is from its size, and it is very easy to select the files to put in it and burnthem. It is available from the Jaws Users website, I believe. The first one said the page could not be displayed, the second and third had download links, but nothing happened when I hit them. One even said my program was downloading, but my IE11 didn’t download anything. Finally, I downloaded the file and tried to install it. It wanted to install three third party programs, AdAware, Tune Up Utilities, and (I think) Pluto TV. My Window Eyes 8.4 could find no check boxes to select whether to not install these, so I just clicked Next and figured I’d uninstall them after I got CDEX successfully installed. However, when I hit Next after Pluto TV came up, it asked me to select an option and an Okay button came up. I reached an impasse at that point, since I couldn’t see how to select the option. So that was the end of trying to install CDEX. Then I tried VLC Media Player. Installing that was easy. Then I brought up the instructions on how to rip CDs with it that Dane so thoughtfully provided a while back. However, not all those controls in setting up the ripping process are accessible for me with Window Eyes 8.4. For example, I cannot check the CD check box. It just won’t change from Unchecked no matter how many times I hit the space bar. I can’t even get it to play a CD that’s in the tray. I know it plays because I can bring up Winamp and play it. The problem with Winamp of course is that it doesn’t know what it’s playing anymore, so I’m trying to find a ripper that knows the tracks. I looked up Exact Audio Copy, but it looks intimidatingly complicated to me frankly. So, anybody got any suggestions for an ACCESSIBLE ripper that I can try that’s not overly complex, but that will produce reasonably good results. I’d really appreciate some advice. Oh, how I miss being able to do the job with Winamp! Evan

I have had enough problems with VO and Siri that I re-installed 8.0.2. Some slight improvement after that but not much. The problem I have in particular is the inability to place a call or send a text message reliably. To me, that, and not the bells and whistles, is why I got the phone. Whether my experience is typical I cannot say. Nor can I say whether it's because of my 16-G iPhone 5. But, unless you really need the bells and whistles, I'd be somewhat cautious about the upgrade. Re: digitizing cassette tapes question
First and foremost, you need to listen to those tapes and see if they're worth it. Probably, if they're commercial tapes, there's so much print-through that you might as well find something else to do. If they're not replaceable, you have everything you need if you have a tape deck which has RCA jacks at the back. Sony used to make one. They do have some which use USB cords, but I've never bought one. Next thing you need is software, either SoundForge or something like it. Make sure when you make the tapes that you don't go into the red, btw. Have something that will either have a meter and tell you, or listen damned carefully to make sure you're not clipping. You might not mind now, but over the years, clipping will drive you nuts. Good luck. - Original Message - From: "Michael Amaro" To: Sent: Monday, October 06, 2014 10:13 PM Subject: digitizing cassette tapes question Hello Listers, What do I need to digitize cassette tapes? However, I have spoken to a few people I would consider a bit more serious about audio than I am, and they are really not fans of VBR at all. I can sort of see why. You're basically depending on this algorithm to decide how much of the sound you really want represented. It's a trust thing and I'm not sure I'd be willing to go that far. One consideration, at least in Winamp, is that if you want to go 45 minutes into a variable bit file, the time accuracy can't be trusted. If they are stored as MP3 files or files in some other format, then you should be able to cut and paste them and knowing exactly what you did and what happened would be helpful. If the CD contains MP3 files, than there would be many hours of programming on a single CD. If each CD contains only an hour or a little more of programming, then the CD is probably an Audio CD and you will need to "rip" the cd to your computer. Even Windows Media Player can do that but there is other software as well. For example, if you want to jump the cursor to 22 minutes and 35 seconds you would type 22:35 and press Enter. IF you want to jump to the 2 hour 28 minute mark you would type 148:00. This is because Winamp appears to operate in minutes recognition mode as opposed to the hh/mm/ss format. Alternatively, Winamp also enables time markers to be defined and to move from one specified time marker to another, very analogous to setting bookmarks in a digital book audio file. To set a time kmarker you would type m, and to go to a preset time marker type alt+shift+M. I hope this helps. Re: Ripping Audio Cassettes
Sure it will. If you can record through a mic using a mic jack, you can get a cord with a resistor in it from radio shack and use that. You can, if I remember right, specify the quality of mp3 the machine generates. You would at worst have to figure a way to cut the tape files into segments. The real question is should you do this at all. If they're personal tapes, go for it. But commercial tapes usually don't hold up well. You have heard the tapes and know what condition they're in, of course. My wife's commercial tapes were so bad after years that there was no way I could "tune the recorder" to get the best sound because there was no best sound. Personal tapes usually have better quality. Good luck. Btw, make sure it's a stereo cable if the recordings are stereo. DVD Burning Issue
Two days ago, out of the blue, my dvd drive started taking almost two hours to make and burn a data dvd. Where I could once start to make a dvd and count on it being 30 percent through the compare pass, the same time now only gets me to 15 percent in the write pass. The discs haven't changed. Is there a way to know if it's the drive? Thanks. To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

Re: bit rate and sample rate
I tried a book I was reading for a bookclub on the Stream, and was able to go all the way to 32-bit mono. Now, I could hear a difference between that and 128 mono, but, to my aging ears, it was slight. I figure that the commercial spoken recordings issued as mp3s are at 128 and keep recordings I want to keep at that standard, but it's strictly arbitrary. - Original Message - From: "Kevin Minor" To: "'PC Audio Discussion List'" Sent: Sunday, April 25, 2010 5:31 PM Subject: RE: bit rate and sample rate Hi. Some out there will disagree with me, but that's all right. I think that for recording just speech, CD quality is overkill. Personally I would use 64 KBPS with 44.1 Khz sampling, in mono. I don't think you'd notice much of an improvement with higher bit rates, and in fact you might be able to go even lower, to 32 kbps, but you might notice some artifacts creep into the picture. As I said, this is for just speech recording. Music is a completely different animal. I personally use 128 kbps mp3 files at 44k sampling. I know it's not CD quality, but I personally like my files at a constant value, and this sounds good enough for me. Have a good day, and don't work too hard. That's a question you are best off answering for yourself by testing against the highest quality you can make to see where you can first hear a difference. I've experimented with a lot of different bit rates and sample rates doing voice recordings but still don't know what combination of the two give good enough quality for speech. I know you need higher rates for music, at least 128KBPS. I'm only talking about voice recordings using a mic at this point. What combination of bit and sample rate will take the least space and give me fair quality speech audio. What should be higher. The bit rate, or the sample rate. I'm talking about MP 3 files. Re: a question about joint stereo and normal stereo
The problem I'm having is that my system won't produce regular stereo. Everything comes out in joint and variable bit rate regardless of software settings. It's Winamp which I'm using to tell me what my stats on a particular file happen to be. Any thoughts? Thanks. - Original Message - From: "Kevin Lloyd" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Saturday, December 26, 2009 2:28 PM Subject: Re: a question about joint stereo and normal stereo My understanding is that joint stereo is a psychoacoustic trick to try and make lower bit rate encoded files sound better in terms of their channel separation. I don't believe the monoblock analogy is strictly correct. All the advice I have seen is to use normal stereo for decent encoded files at bit rates of 192kbps and higher and only use the joint stereo psychoacoustic trick on very poor files encoded at lower bit rates. Re: What am I doing wrong?
No need. The playlist is simply a text file with the names of the files you want played in the order to be played, each file on a separate line. Such as 01 myfirstsong.mp3 02 mysecondsong.mp3 The names must appear exactly as the file name, which means that the numbers above must be in the filename. Place the playlist in the folder with the files to be played. If you put the playlist in the root, you must have the fully qualified path such as: c:\songs\01 myfirstsong.mp3 c:\songs\02 mysecondsong.mp3 - Original Message - From: Robert doc Wright To: PC Audio Discussion List Sent: Thursday, May 07, 2009 10:52 AM Subject: Re: What am I doing wrong? could you send me a copy of one of your m3u files off list? talmi...@wrightplaceinc.net -- By the time you can make ends meet, they move the ends. -- robert Doc Wright http://www.wrightplaceinc.net msn godfeare...@hotmail.com - Original Message - From: Dave McElroy WA6BEF To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Sent: Wednesday, May 06, 2009 6:41 PM Subject: What am I doing wrong? I think that Tom has done a fine job of offering list members the opportunity to define the list's direction and I believe that audio as related to the Mac fits right in to the current definition of applicable topics. Personally, I'm in the midst of deciding whether my next computer will be a Mac or a windows system and discussions of audio applications on both are crucial to reaching an intelligent decision. To others, a discussion of how to listen to some event which is of interest to people who live in another part of the world is just as crucial. So I hope the list will maintain its broad base of topics which are eligible for discussion. Just my 2 cents and nothing more. Re: Descriptive Video on Commercial DVDs and Downloads
Well, they're dependent on the local station to carry or not if the network makes it available. As for TCM, some movies have it , some do not and you will have to check that out with TCM's listings which will indicate which movies have that option. As for CBS, if I did not say it before, NCIS, Without a Trace, the original CSI, and Criminal Minds used to have DVS. Your cable system might carry that if the local channel did. - Original Message - From: Gary Wood To: PC Audio Discussion List Sent: Sunday, March 08, 2009 3:31 AM Subject: Re: Descriptive Video on Commercial DVDs and Downloads I can't find it on Comcast, unless I'm not doing something right! - Original Message - From: "Gary Petraccaro" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Saturday, March 07, 2009 5:17 AM Subject: Re: Descriptive Video on Commercial DVDs and Downloads > Actually, Dave happened to be telling the truth. Re: I'm About to be Nominated to the Dumb Computer Audio Tricks Hall ofFame!
Been there, done that, as the saying goes. - Original Message - From: Nolan Crabb To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Sent: Monday, February 16, 2009 3:18 PM Subject: I'm About to be Nominated to the Dumb Computer Audio Tricks Hall ofFame! List members, you may recall last week I presented a detailed explanation of a problem I was having with Sound Forge 9 and two stereo channels appearing in the same channel. In other words, I could hear both channels in each separate channel as though they had been mixed into a mono channel; hope that recap makes sense. I told you at the time that I had reseated the patch cord into the PC without satisfactory results. Many of you wrote back to encourage me to reinstall the audio drivers perhaps or possibly double check to ensure that Sound Forge was indeed recording in stereo in the first place. Well, here's why I'm likely a good nominee for the Computer Audio Stupid Tricks hall of fame: I decided after being frustrated with this problem all week and trying a bunch of solutions--using a different tape player, etc., that I would just start again with the absolute basics. I knew beyond any doubt more sure of it than I was of being able to breathe, that I had inserted that cable properly and fully into my PC's audio input jack. But just for grins, I decided to give that plug one more little nudge. It already felt tight and in all the way. Well, you can all guess the rest, and by now I hope you're smiling just a bit. Trust me, you should smile guilt free about this; I've been laughing at myself since yesterday. When I gave that cord that little nudge, I heard it click just once more and felt it settle into the jack ever-so-slightly further. Of course, my problem instantly went away and I was again hearing my separate tracks in their separate channels as they should be. Well, that's what being arrogant and cocky will do for you. I was so absolutely certain I had that cord in there as far as it would go, but that extra eighth of an inch or so made all the difference. I figured I'd share my little story, since none of you have ever done anything like that and never will. I want you to at least vicariously enjoy a good laugh or smile at my expense or along with me or whatever you prefer. I guess the moral of this little story is, no matter how sure you are about your connections, check'em one last time before you write this list. Thanks to all of you who wrote back and expressed your concern; I hope you'll forgive me for wasting your time reading and responding to that earlier message. Sound Problems
I have a P4 mother board from Intel with built-in sound. I'm using Nero 7. I want to rip some cds for play on a mono system. I check mono and the appropriate bit rate in Nero and the rip proceeds to what the software calls success. Problem is, the mp3s which I play are still in stereo. I don't know whether this is a Nero problem or a sound driver problem. I have no other system to test on. I'd appreciate some verification that mono works or doesn't work from someone else using Nero of 7 or later, or a suggestion as to what to look at or try. Thanks in advance. Re: Sound Forge 9: I'm Hearing Both Channels
Go through the process of selecting stereo again and make sure you have tabbed to ok. See if that fixes your problem. In a previous edition of SF I found that I've made changes and thought I had changed back, but that second change didn't take. Good Luck. - Original Message - From: Nolan Crabb To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Sent: Friday, February 13, 2009 9:24 PM Subject: Sound Forge 9: I'm Hearing Both Channels I sure hope someone on this list can help me diagnose this. I haven't had a problem until today, and I've no idea what got changed. Here's the background: I'm converting some four-track cassettes to MP3 audio for replay in my Victor Stream. I'm using a stereo cassette machine to do this, which means one of my channels plays normally, the other is reversed. The problem is, I'm not getting any separation in the channels any more. I hear both voices on both channels. I've checked the source, and the stereo machine is indeed playing the cassettes correctly. In other words, one voice is reversed in one channel, the other channel contains the normal track, and they are very much separated. Now when I set up the recording attributes in Sound Forge 9, it says that the sample rate is 44100 Hz. And the channels are stereo. There's nothing here that says mono. Any thoughts at all as to what I'm doing wrong all the sudden? I've played music through the sound card, and it comes out in stereo just fine. The problem appears to linked to either sound Forge or to the settings in my record volume control. This is a Vista machine, by the way. Please, any help at all would be most welcome. I'm obviously done converting these tapes until I can get the channels separated again. And yes, I've restarted the machine several times.
