I agree it should be fixed:

Looks for fresh builds on launchpad in about 5-6 hours:

Right, but the question is whether Pd-extended should go ahead and require
tcl/tk 8.5.
The ttk requirement of search-plugin.tcl-- which loads by default in the next
Pd-extended--
is one reason.  Avoiding two messages in each "Fonts are ugly/weird/broken"
thread is
another:

User-to-entire-mailinglist: Font problem x y z...
Answer-back-to-entire-mailinglist: Are you using tcl/tk 8.5?
User-to-entire-mailinglist: Yes so what next / No but now I am thanx

Much less likely with tcl/tk 8.5 requirement:
User-to-entire-mailinglist: In 2006 I set up my Pd box and stepped out for a bit

to go to medical school. Now I updated Pd and suddenly there's this error.

What happened?

You shall be able to choose tcl 8.5 with:
sudo update-alternatives --config wish

Then, did this error prevent Pd from loading? Afaicr, plugins' errors shall
not block Pd.

Re: [PD] [PD-announce] Pd-extended 0.43.4 release candidate 1: last chance to report your bugs

2013-01-24 Thread Ed Kelly
Don't know if this has been mentioned before...

On Ubuntu Lucid (10.04LTS) Pd-extended-0.43 deb from the launchpad.net
repository.
Pd won't start properly in that it complains that it need Tcl/Tk8.5.
Tcl/Tk8.5 is installed, but so is Tcl/Tk8.4.

(Tcl) UNHANDLED ERROR: version conflict for package "Tk": have 8.4, need 8.5

    while executing
"package require Tk 8.5"
    ("uplevel" body line 10)
    invoked from within
"uplevel #0 $tclcode"FAILED TO LOAD
/usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/search-plugin/search-plugin.tcl

So I tried changing the symlinks in /usr/lib to point to 8.5. This
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 2013-01-24 09:45 libtk.a -> libtk8.5.a
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 2013-01-24 09:45 libtk.so -> libtk8.5.so

Still no good.
Could Pd-extended be made to force the use of the 8.5 libs?

Yeah, that's a tough one. Is this something that you have reported before,

 happens?

I've seen bugs like this in the past, I think we've fixed some of them,

Can you make a screenshot and add it to the bug report patco said he'd file?
The above info would be good to have there too. Something is definitely
problematic with the portaudio implementation. It was causing issues on Mac
OS X, and its the same code.

If you think you have something repeatable, then please file a bug report.
Ideally, it would be the steps needed to reprocude it everytime or a patch to
trigger the bug. But that's not always possible.

Hi,

It seems I have something similar on Windows 7 64bits.

When selecting ASIO (DSP on or off), I have a great lag when moving
the mouse around. The object takes a second to catch up with mouse
pointer once it's stopped. There's no continuous updating of the
object position like with MMIO selected.
Happens on a new canvas with just one object, any object (I used
[route] and [sel]), not just GUI stuff. With GUI elements (numbox) the
value is not updated until the mouse stops briefly.

pob

Looking into the matter, it seems to affect portaudio when I select the
sound chip of the laptop, but not when I select ASIO4all. I haven't
tried my RME Hdsp yet.

Also, when turning off DSP, the tick left of the selected audio output
mode disappears (ASIO or MMIO). It reappears once you re-enable DSP.

Hi Hans,

The indication of Media->"Audio Settings..." looks working fine
because default name of "Built-in Microphone" and "Built-in Output"
described in English.
Most of audio interfaces' names are also described in English. I don't
see problems like MIDI setting.

About the color scheme, you can make a KXStudio color scheme so you can see
the checkboxes and put it in a plugin. Here are some examples:

http://puredata.info/docs/guiplugins/GUIPlugins/

In particular:
https://pure-data.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/pure-data/trunk/scripts/guiplugins/simple_examples/gtklook-plugin.tcl

Re: [PD] [PD-announce] Pd-extended 0.43.4 release candidate 1: last chance to report your bugs

2013-01-22 Thread Raphael Raccuia

Hi,
I tried on KXStudio (based kde and ubundu 12.04): difficult to use,
because of graphicalissues. Certainly the black KX theme is mostly guilty:

-crosses incheck boxes doesn't display. Impossible to know if checked or not
-menus are some bugged: sometimes I have to pass on them with cursor to
display items, sometimes it's mixed with whatis displayed in the window
(log, patch)

I also have trouble with sound, but it's another problem.
I report here because I don't know if the problem comes from KX or pd.

This patch is what fixes it:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=2947822&group_id=55736&atid=478072

About the labels not showing up when the patch loads, that's because
you are saving the patch with a label that has spaces in it, which the
iemgui objects do not handle. In your patch, you could fix it by
using _ instead of spaces, like by using [l2s _].

This could be fixed if iemgui_save() escaped spaces with \ and removed
characters like ;,{}\ from the symbol. I'll try to implement that,
but I won't get to it tonight.

Did you try saving the patch before reloading it? This is crucial to
reproduce the bug.

Steps to reproduce the error are:

1) Open patch in Pd
2) If patch loads with the toggles unlabelled, then right-clicking
the toggle and selecting 'Properties' works (however the receive
labels have not been [loadbang]'d. If patch loads with toggles
labelled right-clicking and selecting 'Properties' results in the
error message.

3) Save patch, close and reload

Saving the patch means it will reopen in the alternate state. Hope
this makes sense.

I see.
I think the old behavior that indicates Japanese name of MIDI port as
blank is not a major problem because I already find out the solution
by changing it to English name. I agree with your reverting.
I would announce it in my Pd blog.

About &character in the label problem, I will test new build later.

Re: [PD] [PD-announce] Pd-extended 0.43.4 release candidate 1: last chance to report your bugs

2013-01-16 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

Hey Sei,

I hope the old behavior works for you, because it turns out that its quite a
bit more complicated than I thought, so its not the kind of change that should
be made without lots of time for testing on many different setups with
different audio devices. I reverted my change that only affect portaudio, i.e.
when you select a device name in Pd-extended's Audio Settings.

I think this is the final release, last chance to test your patches and
 make
sure everything is working well in this release. Also, double-check the
translations. I'll do one final import of translations from Transifex
 before
 finalizing it. Download here:

 http://puredata.info/downloads/pd-extended/releases/0.43.4

Its been a long time coming, but its finally reached completion! This
 release
includes the most new features of any release before, here are some
 highlights:

 * complete help search: search all installed docs (Help->Search)
 * loaders: you can now write native Pd objects in Lua (pdlua) and Tcl
 (tclpd)
 * new libraries: log, iemguts, mediasettings, pduino, syslog
 * GUI plugins: customize your editing experience
 * full Unicode support, write patches in any language
 * fully translatable GUI, with many languages already included
 * Magic Glass to see what's going through connections as it happens

 And much more: http://puredata.info/dev/NextRelease

 Download it here:

Or if you are using Ubuntu/Mint, you can use the PPA:
 https://launchpad.net/~eighthave/+archive/pd-extended/

run these commands in the Terminal to add this PPA to your system:
 sudo add-apt-repository ppa:eighthave/pd-extended

There are some bugs that will have to wait until the next release:

 * Windows command line args don't work with unicode
 https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=3595309&group_id=55736&atid=478070

 * [initbang] worked with GUI objs in 0.42 but not in 0.43

2013-01-16 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

Hey Oscar,

Thanks for your words of appreciation :) Bugs like the one you've seen are
tricky when there isn't a way to reproduce it. So keep your eye on it, and
maybe some other ideas will come to mind. If I can reproduce the bug, then
its generally pretty easy for me to fix. If I can't reproduce it, then I'm
really just guessing.

You can have multiple copies of Pd-extended installed. On Mac OS X, its easy.
You can copy them anywhere, or just double-click straight from in the .dmg.
If you want to keep 0.42.5 around, just rename it from Pd-extended.app to
Pd-extended-0.42.5.app and you can have both in /Applications

Serious audio errors will be logged to the Pd window and will stay around
until you clear them. If you briefly see an audio error flash in the gray bar
in the Pd window, that is basically saying there might have been a click.

To get audio, try switching to "portaudio" in the Media menu. Try clicking
"Reset to Defaults" in the Preferences. Make sure DSP is on. Its hard to
troubleshoot this one without more info.

Like Marco said, in the Preferences, click "Reset to Defaults". Those
libraries are no longer included in Pd-extended but they're still in your
preferences from 0.42.5.

That's why we have this list :)

Did you try saving the patch before reloading it? This is crucial to
reproduce the bug.

Steps to reproduce the error are:

1) Open patch in Pd
2) If patch loads with the toggles unlabelled, then right-clicking the
toggle and selecting 'Properties' works (however the receive labels
have not been [loadbang]'d. If patch loads with toggles labelled
right-clicking and selecting 'Properties' results in the error message.

3) Save patch, close and reload

Saving the patch means it will reopen in the alternate state. Hope
this makes sense.

2013-01-16 Thread Leandro da Mota Damasceno
Well,

I am having some issues, but I think they are mostly due to my setup or
something... I'm running on 10.8.2 Mac OS X, bt.

I have been running 0.42.5 because I didn't want to risk it. So I waited
for a more stable version of pd-extended to start working hard on it. I
already had issues on the betas for 0.43.3 so I wasn't really in hurry...

so now, thing is pretty simple. First of all, I'm not getting any audio
output. Even when it starts, pd-extended gives me an audio i/o error that
quickly disappears.

I'm also getting this message:

memento: can't load library
pixeltango: can't load library
rradical: can't load library
toxy: can't load library
flib: can't load library
flatspace: can't load library
pidip: can't load library

and it really can't load the libs :(

I feel pretty lame but... help?

2013-01-16 Thread James Dunn

I'm using Pd-0.43.4-extended-20130115 and Mac OS 10.6.8.
Did you try saving the patch before reloading it? This is crucial to
reproduce the bug.

Steps to reproduce the error are:

1) Open patch in Pd
2) If patch loads with the toggles unlabelled, then right-clicking the
toggle and selecting 'Properties' works (however the receive labels have
not been [loadbang]'d. If patch loads with toggles labelled
right-clicking and selecting 'Properties' results in the error message.

3) Save patch, close and reload

Saving the patch means it will reopen in the alternate state. Hope this
makes sense.

Re: [PD] [PD-announce] Pd-extended 0.43.4 release candidate 1: last chance to report your bugs

2013-01-16 Thread James Dunn
I seem to have some strange issues with the new Pd gui on Mac OS X with
the latest version of Pd I just downloaded from here:

http://puredata.info/downloads/pd-extended/releases/0.43.4

I've attached a simple patch which loads fine but right clicking either
toggle box and selecting 'Properties' results in this error:

loaded: autocompletion-plugin 0.3

(Tcl) UNHANDLED ERROR: wrong # args: should be "pdtk_iemgui_dialog
mytoplevel mainheader dim_header wdt min_wdt wdt_label hgt min_hgt
hgt_label rng_header min_rng min_rng_label max_rng max_rng_label
rng_sched lin0_log1 lilo0_label lilo1_label loadbang steady num_label
num snd rcv gui_name gn_dx gn_dy gn_f gn_fs bcol fcol lcol"
while executing
"pdtk_iemgui_dialog .gfxstub415620 |tgl|
--dimensions(pix):--- 15 8 size: 0 0 empty
---non-zero-value:-..."
("uplevel" body line 1)
invoked from within
"uplevel #0 $cmds_from_pd"

If I then save the patch and reload it, the toggle boxes are not loaded
correctly. However if I then save it again and reload (without
right-clicking properties) it loads ok.

2013-01-15 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

Hey Sei,

I'm pretty sure I fixed the issues with the Audio and MIDI names being in
Japanese. Can you test it on your machine and confirm? I can't make the Audio
names have Japanese in them on my 10.6 system, so I have no way to test it.

Re: [PD] [PD-announce] Pd-extended 0.43.4 release candidate 1: last chance to report your bugs

2013-01-14 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

Thanks for reminding me! :) I'll announce release candidate 2 right now, and
if no showstopper bugs are reported, then this will be it! So hopefully that
means this week.

Re: [PD] [PD-announce] Pd-extended 0.43.4 release candidate 1: last chance to report your bugs

2013-01-09 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

Ok, I fixed the MIDI devices list on Mac OS X with Japanese characters on my
10.6 machine. I forget, is this also a problem with the Audio devices? Are
Japanese characters making them not show up?

The fix will be in tomorrow's build.

Re: [PD] [PD-announce] Pd-extended 0.43.4 release candidate 1: last chance to report your bugs

2013-01-09 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

There are two ways to update the audio to the audio device: polling and
callbacks. Pd defaults to polling the audio device for updates. "Use
callbacks" sets up a callback so that the audio device "calls Pd back" when
its ready.

I'm not a jack user and I don't know that part of the code, so I'm not going
to dig into that. But do report it to the bug tracker if its an issue you
want fixed.

... I try to investigate more, and I when I check the CHECKBOX 'use
callbacks' all of this wrong behaviour (freezing, signaling watchdog msg)
disapperas.
So I think I have solved my problem.

What exactly does 'use callbacks' ?

I have some trouble with JACK
When I try to change JACK audio settings, pd freezes & message 'watchdog:
signaling pd...' is repeating in console..

I am using Arch Linux 64bit. Tcl/Tk, 8.6.0
Do you need some more infos / logs ?

thank you

Ok, some more bug fixes:

- restored opening of .mxb and .help files from Max/MSP
- fixed Roman's crasher bug with dynamically created subpatches
- (GNU/Linux) fixed double-click opening of unicode file names
- (GNU/Linux) fixed double-click opening of files with spaces in the name
- (GNU/Linux) hopefully fixed the icon for .pd files, let me know if you see
this on your machine, .pd patches should look like the attached image

That's good to know, at least there is a workaround. That also provides me
with a way to reproduce it on my machine :) I didn't know you could rename IAC
Driver, so I did that, and I have the same issue. Now it should be possible to
fix.

Re: [PD] [PD-announce] Pd-extended 0.43.4 release candidate 1: last chance to report your bugs

2013-01-08 Thread Seiichiro MATSUMURA
Hi Hans,

I found the solution to make "IAC Driver" visible in MIDI setting
window of Mac OSX.
In Japanese Mac OSX as a default, the name of Apple "IAC Driver" is
written in Japanese name with 2byte characters in Audio MIDI setting
application of Utility folder. So I changed the name of "IAC Driver"
to English one.
I am not sure this is affected, it seems MIDI setting working fine now
with no freeze.
Thanks for your suggestion.

Best,

Sei

sure everything is working well in this release. Also, double-check the
translations. I'll do one final import of translations from Transifex
 before
 finalizing it. Download here:

 http://puredata.info/downloads/pd-extended/releases/0.43.4

Its been a long time coming, but its finally reached completion! This
 release
includes the most new features of any release before, here are some
 highlights:

 * complete help search: search all installed docs (Help->Search)
 * loaders: you can now write native Pd objects in Lua (pdlua) and Tcl
 (tclpd)
 * new libraries: log, iemguts, mediasettings, pduino, syslog
 * GUI plugins: customize your editing experience
 * full Unicode support, write patches in any language
 * fully translatable GUI, with many languages already included
 * Magic Glass to see what's going through connections as it happens

 And much more: http://puredata.info/dev/NextRelease

 Download it here:
 http://puredata.info/downloads/pd-extended/releases/0.43.4

Or if you are using Ubuntu/Mint, you can use the PPA:
 https://launchpad.net/~eighthave/+archive/pd-extended/

run these commands in the Terminal to add this PPA to your system:
 sudo add-apt-repository ppa:eighthave/pd-extended

There are some bugs that will have to wait until the next release:

 * Windows command line args don't work with unicode
 https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=3595309&group_id=55736&atid=478070

 * [initbang] worked with GUI objs in 0.42 but not in 0.43
 https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=3599058&group_id=55736&atid=478070

 * Right-click menu causes CPU spike
 https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=3525646&group_id=55736&atid=478070

 * specific kinds of "GUI overload"

Why do you think [grid] is causing the crash?
What OS are you running?
32-bit or 64-bit?

Can you include the patch?

The 3-fold difference seems specific to the patch I tested with [1]. I
made a test patch containing many abstractions consisting of a few
vanilla objects and there isn't any noticeable difference.

I don't know if this is the thread where to post this...

I don't even know whether this is a bug or a desired behavior,

but I find quite annoying that shortcuts (cntrl-X, cntrl-N...) don't work for
me when I have "caps locked" on my keyboard.

This applies to all pd-0.43 versions that I have tried, extended and vanilla.

(here: mac osx 10.6.8)

It appears the difference is not specific to recent version of
Pd-extended. I tried a version from May 2012 and it also uses 3 times
more memory for the same patch than Pd-vanilla.

It seems this isn't a release critical issue for most people. However, I
still wonder where this difference does come from.

Ok, I got this one hunted down. The offending commit is this:

commit b95886ccd619d6141a62608f11fda8999ea0a686
Author: Hans-Christoph Steiner
Date: Fri Dec 14 21:29:24 2012 -0500

place new subpatch windows near where the [pd] object was created

Use the last click location in the editor and the screen x/y position of
the owner window to set where the new canvas toplevel window is placed.

The attached patch consisting of only three objects exhibits the
problem. When creating a subpatch inside a hidden subpatch, Pd-extended
crashes. It does not so, when the outer subpatch is visible.

Before this commit, creating subpatches in hidden subpatches was
perfectly legal thing to do.

BTW: Pierre-Olivier helped me testing on Windows 7 (64bit) with the
release candidate and problem 1) is exactly the same as on Ubuntu

Thanks a lot for your efforts. I noticed quite a huge amount of work
went into that version and many goals have been achieved. Thanks to
anyone involved.

Unfortunately, I've run into a couple of problems when running some of
my patches in the release candidate version
Pd-0.43.4-extended-20130107.

1
When loading a patch in netpd on Ubuntu 12.04.1, Pd-extended immediately
and reliably crashes. This does not happen with any Pd 0.43 or 0.44
version. Also it didn't happen with earlier builds of Pd-0.43-extended,
though I can't exactly specify the last version that didn't crash yet
(I'll investigate that later).

Steps to reproduce:
* Start pd-extended
* Load netpd/chat.pd
* click on 'unpatch' in chat.pd to launch unpatch
* load a netpd-patch from netpd/patches (click on 'netload patch')

This is the backtrace from Pd-0.43.4-extended-20130107 on Ubuntu 12.04.1

I have 10.6, and when I switch to Japanese, the IAC driver is still in English.
They must have added those translations in 10.7. Can you run this command to
start Pd in your Terminal when in Japanese mode and send me the result? You
can Copy and Paste everything starting from the command it into a text file and
attach that. Once Pd launches, go to Media->Audio Settings, and Media->MIDI
Settings. If it crashes, then you'll probably need to do Audio and MIDI
separately.

/Applications/Pd-0.43.4-extended-20130104.app/Contents/Resources/bin/pd -stderr

Re: [PD] [PD-announce] Pd-extended 0.43.4 release candidate 1: last chance to report your bugs

2013-01-07 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

At this late in the release cycle, it would take a serious bug for me to
update the included Gem. But don't fret, you can get nightly builds of Gem
and put them in ~/Library/Pd and Pd-extended 0.43.4 will use that one over the
built-in one. Or you could even grab the old Gem from Pd-extended 0.42.5 and
put it into ~/Library/Pd:

cp -a /Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/extra/Gem ~/Library/Pd

As for getting VLC to be part of those builds, VLC is installed on the Mac OS
X 10.6 64-bi build machine, and I could install it on the 10.5 32-bit build
machine too. Gem just needs its ./configure to check for VLC in
/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS:

./configure \
   --with-libvlc-includes=/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/include/ \
   --with-libvlc-libs=/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/lib

I set up a job on the Jenkins build server, hopefully it'll work, then you'll
be able to just grab the VLC plugin:
https://macosx105-i386.pdlab.puredata.info/job/Gem-fink-VLC

Language difference could be a cause. Because in MIDI setting window,
Apple's default "IAC driver" should be appeared but it is indicated as
blank. (see attached file.)
"driver" is translated in Japanese.
Also some audio interface have Japanese character names.
I will try it under English mode later.

Best,

Hmm, this I've never seen happen. Does it happen in English mode too? Do any
of the names of your Audio or MIDI devices have non-latin or Japanese
characters in them?

They do the same thing, but Edit mode(shift+Cmd+E) is an experiment about
whether it makes sense to have a standard set of editing key commands that all
have shift in them:

Autopatch shift+Cmd+A
Edit mode shift+Cmd+E
Magic Glass shift+Cmd+G
Perf Mode shift+Cmd+P
AutoTipsshift+Cmd+T

2013-01-07 Thread Joson Android
ok last chance.

the performance of GEM (93.3 included in latest autobuild) with 4 movies
playback via [pix_film] at the same time is still not as good as in
42.5-extended.
Is it possible to include VLC-plugin backend in the compiled extended version
for osx i386? I would so much love that, can't get it compiled myself..

thank you all for this beautiful program

2013-01-07 Thread Seiichiro MATSUMURA
Hi HC,

On Mac OSX(10.7 Lion), "Audio setting" and "MIDI setting" under
"Media" menu are still buggy.
I often have freeze Pd when I change settings and I need to restart Pd.

This is just another question.
What is the difference between "Edit mode(shift+Cmd+E)" and "Edit
mode(Cmd+E)" under "Edit" menu?
I can't understand the specific function of "Edit mode(shift+Cmd+E)" added.

Best,

Sei Matsumura

Yeah, that's a tough one. Is this something that you have reported before,
like in a bug report in the tracker? Do you get any error messages when it
happens?

I've seen bugs like this in the past, I think we've fixed some of them, but I
wouldn't be surprised if there are still some out there.

2013-01-07 Thread Patrice Colet

hello, I'd like to report again a problem that is still not resolved in this
release...

On win32, I've got many pd patches that makes the GUI not working with mouse
binding,
I can not move any object on the patch, only the arrows can make it move when
it's selected.

It's still hard to tell where does it come from without passing hours opening,
modifying,
closing, and opening again patches that makes pd GUI doing this, maybe one
day...

Hey Esteban,

Did you download the package directly from puredata.info or did you get it from
the eighthave/pd-extended PPA?

Do you mean the auto-completion plugin? That's not included in Pd-extended at

The file where the object names are stored is damaged. All the spaces
are gone between the object names. It's just a really long word.

Same issue with Windows.

Its been a long time coming, but its finally reached completion!
 This release
includes the most new features of any release before, here are
some highlights:

* complete help search: search all installed docs (Help->Search)
* loaders: you can now write native Pd objects in Lua (pdlua) and
Tcl (tclpd)
* new libraries: log, iemguts, mediasettings, pduino, syslog

* full Unicode support, write patches in any language
* fully translatable GUI, with many languages already included
* Magic Glass to see what's going through connections as it happens

run these commands in the Terminal to add this PPA to your system:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:eighthave/pd-extended

There are some bugs that will have to wait until the next release:

* Windows command line args don't work with unicode

* [initbang] worked with GUI objs in 0.42 but not in 0.43
