I have been using HOYA for more than 10 years and they are very well made. I have checked some TIFFEN too but they were so poorly made I just returned them (so poor it was hard to believe). IMO, they should revise their manufacturing process rather than spending on some fancy plastic cases which serve no purpose. Re: Jonesing for a photo fix (not shopping related)
Thanks Kevin. I actually had noticed the fold-over onto the second line and had tried to rebuild the link, but had no luck. I like your "off center" shot. If I were there I would probably do one series (lens/f-stop combinations) centered, one series where you have it. And then I would go lower, by about 2 feet, and left about 1 foot. To slightly exaggerate the offcenterdness. At the end, what you are showing here is probably the strongest. But I also agree that a shot dead-center (maybe slightly lower) would be striking as well. Any thoughts? Personally, I wouldn't, but it's up to you. Putting in a bid just to kill the BIN option will mean that the camera will likely go for pretty close to what it's worth, which is more than $90. :) This way, the buyer, whoever they are, gets a good deal. It's true that the seller's losing out, but that's really their own fault in this case, since they put a BIN price on an item they admitted to knowing little about. A call to a good camera store or a few minutes of online price checking would have let them know what they had, but they chose to go with a BIN price. They got what they asked for it, which isn't so bad. Of course, I'm not looking for a KX Motor Drive, so no big loss here. If I was, then I'd probably be pissed off. :) Isn't the KX Motor Drive the really rare one? The K2DMD is more common, AFAIK. Re: (F)A* 300 f2.8 plus teleconverters
I bought the 400 f2.8 with the intent to generally use it with teleconverters. In controlled tests, the sharpness of the lens, even with the 2x-L teleconverter, is phenominal. The only issue that I have run into is that at times the teleconverters wreak havoc on the Bokeh. It's weird, but sometimes I get beautiful bokehs, sometimes I get odd bokehs were there is destinct details in the background (even though they are faint) and other times the bokeh looks like a bad mirror lens. Some examples: Nice Bokeh: with the 1.4x: http://www.markcassino.com/0002/0002n01.htm with the 2x: http://www.markcassino.com/0007/gallery2/0007nbk.htm Odd Bokeh: with the 1.4x: http://www.markcassino.com/0007/gallery1/0007ne.htm with the 2x: http://www.markcassino.com/0007/gallery2/0007nbu.htm Ugly Bokeh: 2x - http://www.markcassino.com/0007/gallery2/0007ndx.htm I don't have any uglies with the 1.4x The other draw back to the teleconverters is that they do introduce another element of camera shake. I was particularly having problems with the 1.4x-L but found that is was just plain loose, and tightening a screw helped a lot. - MCC At 05:53 PM 3/28/01 +0200, you wrote: Hi, has anyone tested the Pentax (F)A* 300mm f2.8 with the Pentax teleconverters. Its unclear to me whether the "S-1" or the "MZ-1" is the flagship. I also got the impression half a year ago that the flagship (or was it the Z-1p successor?) was basically ready for release. However, a couple of months ago it said that the flagship (or was it the Z-1p successor?) will go through a redesign because its basically gotten too old and uncompetitive in the meantime. The Minolta Dynaxx 7 is seen as a minimum benchmark. I personally believe, and I stress this is pure speculation on my part - not based on any hard facts, that a flagship or "S-1" will not be that close. I'll be surprised if its released before Photokina next year; thats 1,5 years away. However, I do believe that one of the MZ-3 upgrades is not that far away - maybe even this year. RE: New Pentax S-1, MZ-1 and MZ-4(2?)
I just hope they do it SOON! They have been lagging badly behind all others in pro camera development; I guess they just wanted to clean up in the point and shoot market, not to mention binoculars and so on (BTW, have you ever compared the milky, cloudy looking M.. binos with the clear. warm look of the Pentax models? Even in the sub $100.00 Canadian market, M is not even close optically). I LOVE my PZ1-p, and was rather disappointed at the MZ-S cameras specs, although it too is a very nice camera. As I would probably only be able to buy one of these cameras, I think I will wait a bit when the MZ-S comes out to see if these rumours pan out. I would also be interested in an all-metal high quality mechanical camera for battery-free back-up. Could this be the rumoured LX replacement? Keep us posted, Paal. And thanks for the good work. Any reports on this from Japanese people who perhaps attended the show? Cameron - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. It's a pain to point people to specific pages within the Pentax web site because they use frames (all together now: "FRAMES SUCK!"), but with a bit of digging I have found that the URL is http://www.pentax.co.jp/japan/news/2001/200112.html IE gives me Japanese characters from which I can tell nothing. Netscape gives me blank boxes for the characters it doesn't understand but does seem to convert numerals...and the second table cell from the bottom (numbered "1") has a sub-cell with "34 107mm35mm" in it. Nothing to indicate what this is. Not even if it *is* a lens. Could be a point-and-shoot with a built in 34-107 zoom for all I know. Still waiting for a 2x L converter to show up 2nd hand :-( I also tested the lens combined with the new SIGMA APO 1.4x and 2x AF teleconverters. The sharpness and contract is acceptable, maybe slightly less than the Pentax 1.4x L. Yes, although the lens is quite good (the F(A) 300mm 4.5 might be even better) it is too slow to use with the 2x converters. OT: They ARE out to get me
OK. That does it. I got a 5 gallon propane bottle filled at a hardware store last night on my way home from work. Anyway, I went inside to pay and came out 5 minutes later. I was parked just next to the propane tank. I opened the door on the Montero and smelled a strong gas smell, thinking it was the main propane tank. I dismissed it and was just about to turn the ignition key when I heard a hissing sound coming from the back compartment. I stopped in my tracks and went around and opened the rear hatch. The propane was venting and the valve had been left open about quarter turn! I let the vehicle air out for 5 minutes. The attendant wished me a nice day and got on his walkie-talkie. >From here on out I'm reformed, I promise. Can anyone recommend a good insurance salesman? I've used the A* 300/2.8 with the 1.4X-L, and with the AF 1.7 adapter (which gives me an auto-focus 500/f4.5). I'm well satisfied with the results. I don't (yet) have a 2.0X-L, but everything I've heard would suggest that this works very well with the 300/2.8, too. If you're looking for the best bang for the buck it's worth considering the Tamron 300/2.8. I used to own one of those (plus 1.4x & 2x TCs), and optically it's practically indistinguishable from the Pentax. It's a lot cheaper, though. The main drawback is that fitting and removing the Tamron teleconverters isn't quite as simple as using the Pentax ones. -- John Francis [EMAIL PROTECTED] Silicon Graphics, Inc. (650)933-82952011 N. Maybe my 1.7/50 M is not a good sample but my 3.5/35-105 is sharper at 50 mm and it is shaper than my 4/28-70 AL. The new 3.5-4.5/24-90 mm seems the same, sharpness-wise. Dead Horse point is one of my fave places in all the world - and when he discovered my love for canyonlands, Wheatfield had privately mailed me his tale of adventure there (which see posted here somewhere) . Went down the Shaeffer (Shatter? i cant spell worth a damn) trail in a 4 wheel subaru wagon and that was no bargain either - scary as hell. But I digress... Please pules tell me you took a picture of the dead horse by the sign! My sad photo tale of Dead Horse Point is that my stock agency sold a picture of mine to be used on one of Edward Abbey's books being reprinted in paper (a year after his demise, approx.) - I was so elated when I found out the purpose I could have turned down the scratch - then the publishers used a diff pic (mine was horizontal, other one was vertical) sob, sob. But I did get paid, anyway. The good news was the book was rather poorly designed and the picture they ended up using was printed the size of a postage stamp against a confusing background. Re: KMP update (2)
Boz, Cool. Good update. I have no problems seeing the pages on my browser. I like the comments on the pages for the M40/2.8 and the FA43/1.9. In my case this makes the difference. I do not envy you the work. The resolution test numbers are great, but the difference between the two (Fred and Yoshihiko) is a little confusing. Myself, I would only use these types of numbers if I was comparing several lenses of the same focal length, such as the recent discussion about the M85/2.0 versus other 85mm Pentax lenses. I think emphasizing the "readmefirst" link is a good idea. I seem to forget that exists. K. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Hi, has anyone tested the Pentax (F)A* 300mm f2.8 with the Pentax teleconverters. I'm looking for the best telelens investment, filling the 300-600mm focal range. This lens plus teleconverters would give me: 300mm f2.8 420mm f4 600mm f5.6 The 300 f4 lens gives 600 f8, which is a bit slow. Any opinions? Re: What would you pay for this? Vivitar Series 1, 28-80mm/2.8-3.5 Macro
http://www.photographyreview.com/reviews/35mm_zoom_lenses/product_6285.asp With regards to Vivitar, their 'pro' lens range are the series 1. These lenses are good performers and overall are considerably better than the Sigma offerings when built quality and so forth is taken in to account. Having said so much, i have yet to hold one together with a MZ/ZX body. So i cannot comment further. I would still advise getting a new fast lens. Tokina ATX-Pro is what i fell in love with recently. Do consider its 28-80mm/f2.8, i can safely say that its no doubt one of the best third party pro lens at this range. There was a recent TV documentary about the quest to send a manned flight to Mars. The astronaut once outside the Earths atmosphere is unprotected from Solar and other stellar radiation so the time exposed is a big issue. Its said that the Dynaxx 7 is a minimum benchmark. > To me, the two new MZ cameras appear to be rather an updated MZ-3 > and a downgraded MZ-S. The updated MZ-3 style bodies is very likely. I don't believe in the downgraded MZ-S though. Pentax have said that the MZ-S is not the start of a new series and I believe them. The MZ-S wasn't originally planned as I understand it. Pentax decided to develop a stand alone digital camera but at some point during its development it was decided to make a film version. Maybe to justify high developing costs? The then extra development of the film based MZ-S delayed the "flagship" (whatever that camera is; MZ-1 or S-1?). If Pentax indeed plan to make another series of cameras; the S-series (this is indeed not unlikely. There are limits of how many features you can cram into an MZ-style body. Besides, I doubt Pentax would make an S-1 as a stand alone model), then it make sense to let MZ-series stay conservative and simple and let the more feature laden models be limited to the larger S-bodies. An S-5 as F80 competitor is then not impossible. Unless it is so, the existence of the MZ-S seems hard to explain. It must fill some sort of hole in the future Pentax line-up. I mean, if upgrades of the MZ-3 will be feature laden wouldn't they then cannibalize the MZ-S?. Now, if we visualize the MZ-3+ models (MZ-4, 2, 1) as conservative like the MZ-3 and the S-1 with interface like the Z-1p, then the MZ-S makes sense. Its the small, lightweight, sturdy but capable body that combine easy of use and simplicity with speed of operation. Pål - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Camera lens balance
Hi, it's about where the centre of gravity falls. Some people prefer it to fall towards the camera end whereas others seem to prefer it at the lens front end. If you're a camera-ender, like me, and used to older heavier cameras and lenses such as an LX+winder, then it can be quite disconcerting to use one of the newer lightweight bodies on an older lens because the centre of gravity has moved so far forwards. --- Bob mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Wednesday, March 28, 2001, 12:35:21 AM, you wrote: > But what about this balance issue? Very likely a Canon clone, with a simplified user interface via a left mode dial and the new Safox VII autofocus system. To me, the two new MZ cameras appear to be rather an updated MZ-3 and a downgraded MZ-S. There is little sense in improving the MZ-7 - an already settled body in its class. But the MZ-3/5n cries for a new autofocus and a touch of the flash system. Otherwise this is a camera to stay, outside any fashions and trends - let's call it MZ-2. Due to the wide gap (pricewise mainly) between MZ-S and MZ-2, a new body may be needed, perhaps a MZ-S without data imprinting. A smart reuse of a the MZ-S chassis/shutter will reduce the manufacturing prices, just as Pentax did with the original MZ line. With this structure, the SLR line might please every fanciness and pocket.
