Re: Way OT :Re: PUG Themes
Our family was very poor. We were NYC dirt farmers, which meant that we first had to collect enough dirt in order to farm. Every morning my mom and dad would leave the city and walk and hitchhike to the suburbs where they'd go around to homes and do odd jobs to earn enough dirt to bring home to the subway tunnel under which we lived. After many years they collected enough dirt to plant a few tomatoes and some peas, which they diligently sold to earn money for more dirt. After many years they were able to grow enough crops so that they could afford a few boxes. Our first home consisted of two shoe boxes, a box from a large, console TV, and a piece of plywood. We were very happy until our neighbors got a refrigerator box, and then my father, after years of denial, realized that he had to do better for his family. So, for months, after working in the garden all day and collecting dirt from various sources, he'd follow delivery trucks through the dangerous streets of the city. Finally, one cool, spring evening, he was able to acquire a beautiful box from an Amana side-by-side, and dragged it home behind him, pulling it along the cobbled streets attached to a length of rope which he'd been using as a belt. Against terrible odds, and with his pants falling down a few times, the box finally got to our subway tunnel. Oh, what joy. What a palace! Not only did we have the nicest and biggest box in the neighborhood, but we were able to rent out the smaller boxes to a family of newcomers, who had recently moved to NYC in search of a better life. When they saw how well we'd done, their spirits were bolstered, knowing they'd made the right choice. -- Sheldon Belinkoff CREATURE'S COMFORT mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Dan Scott wrote: > > You win-the only flood I've ever been in was in the aftermath of the afore > mentioned hurricane. > > Dan Scott (trailer-trash before trailer-trash was cool) > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > Shel writes: > >Sheesh! Slides from a test roll last weekend came back >very sharp. Don't think it's normal but if it's just the filter ring it shouldn't affect picture quality and it should be easy to fix. The inner trim ring should unscrew, revealing three or four small screws that hold the filter ring. One or more of these is probably what need tightening. >With my 1p set for mtf, the meter gives me f5.6 at regular distances, >and f8 at macro. (In >macro, I shot every stop from f8-32, and my eyes can't detect much >difference in the slides except depth of field.) At some point the increase in diffraction as the aperture gets smaller causes a reduction in sharpness that more than offsets the other benefits of small apertures (at least as far as sharpness is concerned). This value varues from one lens to another but with most 50mm lenses it's around f8. Since diffraction is dependent on the physical size of the aperture in mm (rather than the relative size in "f" numbers), longer lenses stay sharp down to smaller apertures than normal lenses. A 100mm shouldn't fall off much until at least f16 but again, this varies from lens to lens. Since, as you've observed, this babty is razor sharp all over, just choose an aperture as close to f8 as possible that gives you the DOF you want. >My 1p hunts more than usual with the lens in macro mode. FA 100 mm. f2.8 macro: two questions
I just got this from KEH in "like new" condition, complete with box, case, papers, and caps. The lens appears (nearly) unused, but I notice that the front tube (filter mount) is looser than on other lenses that I have. Is this normal? Slides from a test roll last weekend came back very sharp. With my 1p set for mtf, the meter gives me f5.6 at regular distances, and f8 at macro. I thought that macro lenses were designed to give their best performance stopped down. How does this lens perform at f16-32? (In macro, I shot every stop from f8-32, and my eyes can't detect much difference in the slides except depth of field.) My 1p hunts more than usual with the lens in macro mode. Fixed my battery eating Pentax MX
A while back I e-mailed the list mentioning that I had an MX that would completely drain the batteries after a few of days, even though the LEDs in the viewfinder were off. I was able to fix it with the help of the MX repair manual that a PDML member very kindly posted at http://www.robertstech.com/pentax.htm The key piece of info that this manual revealed is that if the voltage drops below 2.7, the LED lights go off. What this suggested to me is that the meter could be drawing a considerable amount of power even though the LEDs are off. (My electronics knowledge is a bit sketchy, but I think the light meter uses a resistor, which presumably would use the energy to generate a bit of heat. It doesn't have to create a lot of heat to drain two tiny batteries.) I saw from the diagram that the meter coupling to the shutter release lever was right down at the bottom, and accessible by unscrewing the bottom plate. Down there is a tiny switch that consists of two springy pieces of brass colored metal that touch to make the LEDs light up. What happens when you press down on the button is that a tiny arm that holds up one half of this switch allows it to go down and contact the other one. When I opened the bottom plate of my camera, I found that these two tiny pieces of metal were in contact even when the shutter release was not pushed down. All I had to do is bend one of them slightly to keep them from contacting when they shouldn't. I should note that the distance between the open and closed position is less than a millimeter. Pentax really gambled on close tolerances here, in the hope that nothing would disturb these tiny, fragile pieces of metal. _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. 1.7x AF teleconverter
I've just spent some time (& half a roll fo film) playing with my new toy, the 1.7x teleconverter/autofocus converter and I have to say that it's really fun! What a nifty device! I just slapped it and an SMC-A 50/1.7 on my PZ-1p, went out in the garden and photographed some flowers and stuff. Between the 1.7x maginification and the combined focusing range of the lens itself and the teleconverter, you can get right up close. I also must admit I liked having my old A-series lens autofocusing away. If the image quality is half way decent I'll be really happy! - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. SMC-K Pentax 105mm f/2.8
Hi Everyone, I praised this lens last week while discussing the SMC-M 100mm f/2.8 and I indicated it was somewhat rare. Well, the local Pro Shop currently has one in Exc+ Condition ($200), if anybody is interested. The price is on the high side, but this is an outstanding short telephoto lens. http://www.precision-camera.com/buy/usedpentax.htm Regards, -- Jose R. Our minds know perfectly well where we put it and, when it's no longer there, we look for logical places for it to be. Right then we are doomed because what's logical to us is not logical to a woman (and vice versa). So, though it is in "plain sight" from a woman's point of view, it is invisible to us right up to the instant she retrieves it, in a condescending way, of course, from the completely illogical place she put it. The mean wives will then try to convince you that that was where you put it but don't you believe it for a moment. Len --- - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. FS: 645 and 35mm Pentax
I have some redundancy in my gear, so I'm making the following items available to the PDML membership. Prices are "you offer it first, you take it" prices. I'll entertain other offers, or I'd be willing to make a trade for a Pentax-FA 645 75/2.8 or Pentax-A 645 55/2.8. I accept Paypal, money orders and personal checks, and you'll have 5 days to determine if the item is functioning and represented correctly. Shipping includes insurance. Items not sold by Wednesday evening will go on ebay. I'll ship outside the US if it isn't too much of a pain. I get to determine what "too much of a pain" is. Pentax-A 135/4 LS - $425 This is in excellent condition. Glass looks great, though there's a dust speck stuck behind the front element. Barrel looks better then average except for 3 small scratches. So everyone should save their money from 50mm/1.2 or any other fast lens, and use it to buy an LX? You get 2 stops brighter view from ALL your lenses. How often do you actually use 50mm at 1.2? Re: Audio Driver
Colin, Creative identifies its products by the CT number on the board, not the chip. See http://www.creativehelp.com/specs/, and then find your driver based on that. If you are using Win98, it may have native support and drivers for that card already, and you could try those. Re: New Lens Series?
Alexander wrote: >Any rumors, speculation, or pure guess work on > what these new lenses may be or when they may be announced? There are no (verifiable) reliable rumors about new lens series. Rumors about a new FA*II ultrasonic lenses has surfaced in Japan on mailing lists but their reliability is uknown. The lens mentioned was said to be for 35mm but was obviously a standard lens for the 645 system. What is certain though is that Pentax have a number of new cameras, lenses and acessories in the works. This equipment is for Japan production and therefore not cheap stuff. A new lens series is of course possible but pure speculation at this stage. Whats certain though is that these products are not that far away since they are apparently tooling up for them now. Of course the FA* lenses may be due for replacement; most of them at least. They are after all 10 years old and may reach the end of their planned life cycle. If Pentax plan to release ultrasonic lenses the FA* are the most obvious candidates. Release schedule is obviously dependend on a platform for them something that means several bodies, some of them most likely high volume. I would like to stress that this is pure speculation. However, Pentax is planning more upper level products. Pål - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. My "new" stiff zoom...
Hi, All! I've just got the famous Pentax SMC 70-210 F4 zoom I've bid on eBay. It looks good enough optically and cosmetically but has pretty stiff focusing especially on 70mm zoom position near short range. Of course the zoom action is little loose also ;-) Is it possible to do something (lubricate) with this, preferably by myself (suppose I have enough skills in such kind of things repair). Maybe somebody tried to perform such task and know what to do? PS Definitely the seller didn't describe nothing about it: "sooo clean optically and physically". I'm trying to communicate with him on this issue... Maybe you know how much such service will be cost? Thanks in advance and happy shooting, Vlad - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Digitally colorizing black and whte (Was: Scanner fun)
Jody wrote: > And I tried to > colour my cheeks, but ended up looking like a > showgirl, or a porcelain doll. Well, that's all right too, as long as it's you... :) > The lips looked weird > too. They really did...? Hmm. I don't mind much... :) Anyway, I think that's fun too, trying to color black and white pictures. (Old family pictures mostly or pictures of places no longer there.) I haven't yet got much further than you have, though. The problem for me is to find a way of colorizing while still keeping the original "texture" of grain and shadows of the original surface (of the black and white picture), be it the wall of a house or the skin of a person. Anyone got a hint of the best way to go about to achieve this? > I only wish I had taken more people photos to play > with. I am fortunate to have plenty, but I shoot mostly in color anyway. The challenge here is to have fun with friends and relatives: distorting, cutting and pasting etc. Btw. anybody know where I can get ready made cartoon... frames(?) that are being used in cartoons for people's words or thoughts? Daphne: > oh, wel... guess I'l join the Lasse club then :-) Oh Daphne, finally... after I've been waiting and hoping for soo long... :) And since you are the very first one to apply, I hereby appoint you Lifetime Honorary Member (LHM) of the club. For those of you who haven't yet received information on it - The Lasse Club is open for all female Pentax shooters of the world. If you do not happen to use Pentax gear, or do not even understand words like "camera", "shutter" etc, that's fine too, as long as you are female. You can still apply and become a member. (If you are not really female, but still wish you were, like a pseudo, semi, wannabe female - what the heck, we'll find a way to work around that too - let's say that you're all eligable for the Lasse Club Supporting Membership (LCSM) ). (The main and maybe sole objective of this club (I'm still working on it's charter) is simply to make photographing (or non photographing) girls/women/ladies happy and feel good, in any sense of any word.) There will be awards and prizes for everyone. (Photo related or according to personal desires). Women of the world - Unite now! and become a member of the Lasse Club. I have seen bronzing in improperly washed (i.e. machine processed) prints, including several of my own that I did while I was at Sheridan; less than two years in the sun bronzed 'em. In my own experience here I've found that the problem doesn't show up as long as you use a reasonably long wash and a quick treatment in Sistan (a kind of permawash from the friendly Agfa people). It has been done in PUG before (Normal B&W, April 2000), and it's a good idea, and we could well use it again IMO. Maybe with another focal length? However, the LX is a very enabling camera house. Its solid construction has made me take a camera to places where I otherwise would have gone without. And under weather/temperature conditions where I otherwise would have stayed indoors. It's metering system has helped me get pictures I otherwise would have missed. Esp. with long exposure times. Bracketing isn't half as efficient. I think the LX gallery is a good idea. That reminds me of a Photo Rally competition I did recently. This was organised by the local photo store. We had a whole day in which to photograph 9 topics. It was a beautiful sunny day, and one of the topics was "Rain". It brought some interesting photos. They had some neat topics that could be interpreted in so many ways. Also there was a thing on the News tonight about a tanker/truck carrying flour, and some valve blew, covering a whole lot of cars in flour. It looked a bit like snow. Re: Tri X vs T-Max 400
T-Max 400 has smaller grain for certain. From personal experience, I believe it has slightly wider exposure latitude, but highlights can tend to block up if processing is even slightly incorrect. I think Tri-X appears sharper on modest sized enlargements due to its grain. T-Max seems fussier about processing. It yields great results in certain soups but not in others. I expose it at 320 asa and develop it in D-76 1:1 at 68 degrees for 10 minutes. I know its heresy to say so here since Tri-X is the list's favorite film, but I prefer T-Max 400. It's this small platic block within the gap of the mount that transfers the chosen aperture to the body (correct English terms?) > > I'm surprised how expensive the 1.7 is - it costs about 350 DM in Germany > > (that's about US$ 160), while other lenses from Canon/Nikon/Minolta are > > about 250 DM (US$ 115). > > Are those not 1,8 offerings from the other manufacturers? more or less correct: Canon EF 1.8/50 II (ø52)249.- Nikon AF 1.8/50 (ø 52) 249.- Minolta AF 1.7/50 (ø49) 249.- Pentax AF 1.7/50 (ø49) 359.- Canon EF 1.4/50 USM (ø58) 969.- Nikon AF 1/4/50 D (ø52) 749.- Minolta AF 1.4/50 (ø49) 559.- Pentax AF 1.4/50 (ø49) 549.- (prices in DM from www.fotokoch.de) So every 0.1 aperture is about 100 DM more? ;-) Kind regards Martin - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: SMC-FA 1.4/50 vs. 1.7/50
Hi, Recently Martin Trautmann wrote: > > what's your recommendation for those two lenses? > > http://phred.org/pentax/k/lenses/primes/40-55/FA50f1,7.html > http://phred.org/pentax/k/lenses/primes/40-55/FA50f1,4.html Well, if you were closer to Hamburg you could try out both... There is an F50/1,7 on eBay.de right now. In general, this is a difficult question. The 1,4 and 1,7 lneses have been tested by different people, and the results are mixed, some say one is better, some say the other. However, they all agree: both lenses are extemely good, with the 1,4 being a bit bigger, a bit heavier, and more expensive. So, the answer is this: if you need f/1,4 then get the 1,4. Otherwise get the 1,7 or the one that you find first for a good price. > I'm surprised how expensive the 1.7 is - it costs about 350 DM in Germany > (that's about US$ 160), while other lenses from Canon/Nikon/Minolta are > about 250 DM (US$ 115). PhT: Scanner fun.
I just set my new computer up last night. It came with a scanner and Adobe Photoshop, so I spent last night playing, having never used a scanner before. I had a set of photo stickers of me from my visit to Melbourne. I went into one of those booths where you stick money in the slot, for the novelty more than anything. They were supposed to be black and white with red tint, but were more sepia, I suppose. They are probably the nicest photos of me ever taken. So I got photoshop to make them black and white, then I had fun hand-colouring one. I wanted to see what my eyes looked like in different colours (they are brown). The blue looked a bit strange, but I think green looked good. I found it worked better to paint over the iris of the eyes, instead of using the wizard to change eye-colour. The main problem I had was trying to find a natural skin-tone. I ended up using a pale pink, but it just wasn't right. And I tried to colour my cheeks, but ended up looking like a showgirl, or a porcelain doll. The lips looked weird too. I was trying for a natural pink, but it was a bit brighter, and I kept going over the lines. Maybe I'll enter it in the next PUG - not! I only wish I had taken more people photos to play with. It's not quite as interesting seeing what a flower looks like with a different coloured centre. Jody. __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! SMC-FA 1.4/50 vs. 1.7/50
Hi all, what's your recommendation for those two lenses? http://phred.org/pentax/k/lenses/primes/40-55/FA50f1,7.html http://phred.org/pentax/k/lenses/primes/40-55/FA50f1,4.html I'm surprised how expensive the 1.7 is - it costs about 350 DM in Germany (that's about US$ 160), while other lenses from Canon/Nikon/Minolta are about 250 DM (US$ 115). Thus the gap to 1.4 is much smaller than for other manufacturers: about 550 DM (US$ 250). What's your experience and recommendation? The local info sheets listed the 1.4/50 with 6 groups and 7 lenses, the 1.7 with 6 groups and 5 lenses!? But after raeding the link above, I guess this was a typo. 5 groups and 6 lenses. Thanks for your comments Martin PS: how to I search in the archives for e.g. "1.4" or "50"? The screens look nice and bright, still have to use them in real life though! BTW: I need about a half-stop compensation on my MX to compensate for the brighter screen ...
