That looks pretty nice.

I gave into temptation last week as the bike shop had taken about
1/3rd off the price of a bike I've been lusting after for quite some
time. By the time I found out and got around to going in they only
had one left, luckily it was my size.

http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=33112

The darn thing absolutely flies but I've had a couple of hairy
moments due to its sharp handling.

Bikes are like lenses - you can never have too many. I just wish I
had more time to ride them :(

PESO: K20D woodpecker samples

2008-03-09 Thread Bob Sullivan
I finally paid attention to suggestions here and applied them to some
birds at the feeder.
I haven't been too satisfied with my results, the birds being out of focus.
I shot some with the K20D and A400/5.6 -
ISO cranked up to 800 and aperture down from f5.6 to f7.1 - f9.0.

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7038311&size=lg
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7038321
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7038324
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7038331

I'm pretty happy with these.
They are severe crops from the originals.
Look at the Larger image tab to see full size crops.

The remote assistant allows one to operate every aspect of the camera (except
Live View) from
the computer that the camera is tethered to. When one actutes the shutter from
the computer, the
camera takes a picture and downloads it to the computer right away, where it is
visible on the
remote assistant software.
If Live View had been integrated into the Remote Assistant software, then the
Live View data
would be visible in Remote Assistant, which would be nice.
As it is only a 1.6mp 20ish FPS data stream, I am sure that the USB bandwidth
would accomodate
it.
It would also be nice if one could press a button on the keyboard to release
the shutter rather
than having to mouseclick a silly on screen button.

The Nikon and Canon setups with Live View support Live View on the
tethered computer, if you throw the appropriate WiFi dongle into the
mix, they'll even do this wirelessly. Of course, with the exception of
the 40D, these are all much more expensive cameras.

You might want to take a peek at the focusing screen first and try to see if it

Re: PESOs & gripes: K20D & Tamron 70-210

2008-03-09 Thread pnstenquist
You should read the manual Tim. You haveto enter the focal length to get shake
reduction. Just enter the focal length at which you will use the lens. Or turn
shake reduction off. To enter the f-stop, set the exposure dial to M. Then push
the green button, and the camera will set a shutter speed.

Problem Update: K20D and DA* 16-50 F2.8

2008-03-09 Thread Joseph Tainter
PPS: I am impressed so far with the K20D.

Pentax is known to have had problems with the new factory near Hanoi
where the DA* lenses were produced. I'm told this is why the subsequent
DA* lenses were delayed. Paul is correct that I took a risk by buying
the DA* lenses early. But I learned a few years ago when Pentax gear
started becoming hard to get that if you want a piece of Pentax gear,
grab it when you see it.

BTW, the replacement I got for the defective DA* 50-135 seems to be a
stunning performer.

I had one for a while, sold it to Chris Brogden who sold it to someone farther
east (Frank?).
Anyway, it is a surprisingly good lens, very heavy and solid feeling, and also
very sharp and
contrasty, with excellent flare control. My only nitpick with it is an almost
garish colour
reproduction.
I'd have it still but I found a Super Tak 17mm fisheye, and decided that while
one can never
have too many lenses, having more than one fisheye was just silly.
So now I have the Tak 17mm and the 10-17mm lens.
Silly me.
At least I don't have three.

Very nice.

I had some one-wheeled enablement last week. My back wheel collapsed
so I had to buy a new one! Plus cog and rear mech. Annoying really
because I wanted to do more work on the bike but was going to wait

It is asking for focal length information because the lens isn't transmitting
that data. If you
turn off the shake reduction, that dialogue will go away, since it is asking
for the focal
length so that it can set up the shake reduction properly.
As far as it not being able to set the aperture, (I'm presuming the adapter is
an A style, and
is actually in the A position) I've had problems in the past with Tamron
Adaptalls working fine
on one Pentax camera, and then not working on a different one. Try cleaning the
contacts on both
the lens and camera body and see if that makes a difference.
You can also try remounting the Adaptall to the lens, and I found with one
particular mount that
wiggling the lens a bit after it was mounted would make the thing work.

You might also try that lens on a different K20 and see if it plays nice on it.
If so, you
should be able to exchange the camera body based on flawed performance.

So far, I've mounted every one of my A series and beyond lenses to the K20, and
it plays nicely
with all of them. I don't have any A Series style Tamrons anymore because I
found that they just
didn't play nice with Pentax all the time, so I turfed them and bought first
party glass
whenever possible.
I did own the lens in question, and found it to be a very good performer on my
Nikons, but I
sold it somewhat after I went to Pentax and aquired a Tokina 80-200/2.8 which I
liked better.

PESOs & gripes: K20D & Tamron 70-210

2008-03-09 Thread Tim Bray
To be precise, a Tamron SP, 70-210mm 3.5, and it worked perfectly with
the *ist-D. It's not perhaps the creme de la creme of telephoto
zooms, but it's taken some good pictures for me:

http://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/200x/2005/05/07/Sports-Photog
http://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/200x/2008/01/04/Mountains

http://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/200x/2007/07/30/The-Moon

When I attach it to the K20D, I get this little dialogue asking me to
enter the lens' focal length (!?!?) and then it can't set the f-stop.

I've always that the Pentax dogma was "your old lenses still work."
So I'm assuming this is a firmware issue that will be fixed.

Um, in case it's not obvious after all my grousing: I'd say that if
you're thinking about a K20D, hold off a few months.

My Canon using buddy found some sort of hack (The Undutchables?) that revised
the firmware to
allow a bunch of this sort of stuff to be shot in RAW instead of jpeg, but I
never saw the
point. The idea behind scene modes is to allow in camera processing to give you
a specific type
of output. It seems to me that using a scene specific shooting mode, and then
outputting to raw
is somehow defeating the purpose of the scene modes.
Or, I might be misunderstanding the whole thing, sine my eyes glaze over and my
ears bleed
anytime he starts talking about his Canon stuff

On the DS at least, raw is available when scene modes are invoked. I
never tried a scene mode before so I learned something.

Pentax Scene Modes vs. Raw

2008-03-09 Thread George Sinos
This is a question for the PDML folks with k100's or ds that have
Scene Modes. When you use one of the modes, such as portrait or
landscape, is the raw format available or does the camera default to
JPG?

One of the students in my class has a Rebel XT and showed me that the
camera made Raw files unavailable in the scene modes. I was wondering
if this is common. Several of the cameras make settings like this
when in Auto, but it hadn't occurred to me that they might do the same
in the scene modes. I guess I can understand the thinking behind it.

Thanks, gs

K20D expanded dynamic range samples needed

I've been currently using tone mapping techniques to expand dynamic
range on K100D Super but would appreciate to see how K20D expanding
dynamic range looks on your pictures. 200% (maximum) would be nice to see.

Thank you.

Re: K20D & AF calibration data

2008-03-09 Thread David J Brooks
So far, the three DA lenses i have. The 50,16-45 and 50-200.

BUT

It seems an issue with more close up subjects. If i am shooting
something with some bulk or size to it, all seems fine.

I cannot get out my door at the moment, so i'll retest all three this
morning, however i thinl its going back, with prints of my examples,
when i get back from Fargo later in the week.

Great grab, paul.

There's one thing that doesn't fit in that pic.
Something about footware...

Re: OT: Cranes, cranes and more cranes

Good fun.

Then I made the mistake to go to the main page to look for more.
I don't think I need to know how you found that page... :-)

Best,

Re: Pentax Gallery Voting

2008-03-09 Thread AlunFoto
I'm totally with you, Bruce.
I have posted here before on how the voting page is programmed, and
this change seems to be addressing one of my main criticisms; the
total size of the webpage.
Because of the way it is programmed, the page has to pre-load all the
full-gallery-size images at first call. With five full-gallery-size
images in landscape orientation, the voting page easily amounts to 1.5
MB. By shrinking the large pics on the voting page, they reduce load
time significantly.

What would have been better was to increase thumbnail size, and drop
the pre-loading for an on-demand loading of the full-size images.
However, this would mean a total deviation from the page design. The
whole voting registration would need reprogramming. It's not a small
task. :-(
