Yeah, sorta figured that part out about 9 - 10 hours too late. :-(

From: mike wilson

Use shutter priority, then you can easily switch between 1/125 (works
for most prop. planes) and faster for other aircraft.

Shooting WWII aircraft. What's a good compromise shutter speed. I
define "good" as sharp images of the airframe with a realistic blurring
of the props?

Idiots are best dealt with by a wildly swinging 600/4.

I'll keep it in mind if I ever get a 600/4.

The restraining line where I was standing was so close to the taxi-way,
I couldn't even use my 300. Maybe 200 feet from where we were standing
to the edge of the taxiway; 1200 feet to the centerline of the runway.

80mm wasn't wide enough to frame an entire aircraft when they were right
in front of me. A 50 - 250 might have been better. It would have let me
get tighter on some of the farther out shots, but wide enough when the
aircraft were up close.

Re: Custom White balance

2009-04-28 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi

Yes, auto wb.

The difference is that with LR or full versions of CR used with PSCS,
you can adjust an arbitrary number of similar photos with the same one
click.

I often color correct an entire shooot's photos by picking the right
point in one and applying that to all the ones shot under the same
light. Takes a half second.

one of its strongest features. You can choose an eyedropper function
to click a white or grey point. And you can also adjust temperature
and tint. Exactly like the demo version of Photoshop I've been playing
with.

If making the processing effort smaller by whatever increment is

more that

iPhoto's adjustment tools are relatively primitive compared to ACR or
Lightroom that is really making the difference. iPhoto isn't
exactly a
paragon of image processing applications, although used sensibly it
can do a
pretty nice job. I've simply found it too awkward to obtain the

Re: Custom White balance

2009-04-28 Thread Nick Wright
That's interesting about the white instead of grey reference. I just
assumed that it could be either grey or white like the other brands'.
But it does seemed to have worked fine.

Yeah, I wasn't happy entirely with the noise. Most of those were shot
at ISO3200. Especially the tighter shots where I was using the
135/3.5. Kept the aperture at 5.6 for a little DOF, gave me a shutter
of 1/100th which turns out was just ever so slightly underexposed. If
I had exposed better the noise wouldn't have been so bad. Also the way
that iPhoto handles the cropping is not conducive to reducing noise.

As far as noise reduction software is concerned, I've tried most of
them and have never been happy at all with the results.

But then I am the guy who likes to shoot faster film because I think
grain is a nice feature. :)

That appears to be more intelligent guesswork than a spec leak.
There's no specs on sensor/shutter or anything purely internal.

Offhand I'd say it's entirely derived from the already-leaked pictures
and 1-2 more (a rear picture and a shot with the 'WR' Kit lens he's
claiming).

Re: Custom White balance

2009-04-28 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The cameras' Auto ISO algorithms simply have a relatively limited
range of adaptation/adjustment. It doesn't make much difference to me
whether I spend a half second in Lightroom to color correct white
balance, so that's a pretty small advantage. I don't think I've ever
moved any of my cameras' settings from Auto ISO.

If making the processing effort smaller by whatever increment is
important to you, then I'm glad it's working well. However, I suspect
it's more that iPhoto's adjustment tools are relatively primitive
compared to ACR or Lightroom that is really making the difference.
iPhoto isn't exactly a paragon of image processing applications,
although used sensibly it can do a pretty nice job. I've simply found
it too awkward to obtain the results I want when I try it. That's one
of the tradeoffs of using no-cost software.

Soaps with anti-bacterial ingredients do nothing to stop viruses.
Since most use a small trace of alcohol and many bacteria thrive on
traces of alcohol, they aren't particularly effective against bacteria
either.

This told to me by my doctor at the height of the flu season last
December. He suggested just keeping your hands clean did as well, and
wearing a mask to help not spread any viruses to other people. Plain
old Ivory soap and warm water do just as well as all these fancy soaps.

the bottles), but I see it as a liability.

Because that 0.1% of germs that survive to reproduce will logically be
the strongest most horrible versions of the germ.

It's natural selection speeded up many times. We destroy the weakest
strains of the germ, and leave the strongest to continue spreading.

And meanwhile our bodies never develop any kind of natural immunity.

Nope.

Generally, they'll be the germs that got the least amount of exposure to
the alcohol. It says nothing about how virulent they are. Generally
you *want* to make the selection about surviving nasty chemicals rather
than being an efficient parasite of humans. The bug that learnt how to
metabolize chlorine bleach is scary to think about, but it now *needs*
chlorine bleach, and there is (I hope!) none inside you.

> It's natural selection speeded up many times. We destroy the weakest
> strains of the germ, and leave the strongest to continue spreading.

A billion years of yeast hasn't found one that can cope with more than
about 25% ethanol. I'm not worried we're going to produce something
that can shrug alcohol (or put all the distillers out of work by making
90 proof wine) and what you're really doing by washing your hands is
reducing the odds of systemic infection.

> And meanwhile our bodies never develop any kind of natural immunity.

Sure they do. It just doesn't get overwhelmed.

All killing 99.9% of the germs on your hands does is multiply the
default risk of systemic infection by 0.01 (because it's really going to
be 99% unless you're emulating the lab conditions of the test; mind you
got all of both thumbs...); if that risk is a chance of 0.1 out of 1 per
exposure (one handshake, one nearby sneeze, etc.) it becomes 0.001.

If you're exposed 10 times at the 0.1 chance that's (0.9)^10 = 0.35 that
you *won't* get it. (Which is two chances in three that you _will_.)

If you're exposed 10 times at the 0.001 chance that's (0.999)^10 = 0.99
that you *won't* get it. (One chance in a hundred that you _will_.)

Since people constantly touch their faces and get what's on their hands
into the mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth) that way, this is very
much worth doing with respect to contagious diseases.

Alcohol sanitizers are preferred for cases where there's no obvious
soiling; it's easier on your skin and works just as well. Mind you get
both thumbs.

Nice subect, exposure & focus but I find the composition a bit of a
concern - the proximity of the wing to the LH edge (needs more space to
the
edge) & the unfortunate intersection of the tail with the end of the

Custom White balance

2009-04-28 Thread Nick Wright
I shot a presentation on the animals of Australia that was held at our
public library last night.

I wasn't happy with the results from the auto white balance and after
a few frames I decided to set a custom white balance.

And I'm really impressed. Pentax's custom white balance is so much
easier to set than Canon's.

With Canon you shoot your reference shot. Then find the menu for
setting the custom balance, then find the reference image you shot and
select it. Then you select the custom white balance option.

I had never read the manual on the Pentax white balance, so I just
selected custom WB from the WB menu. It asked if I wanted to shoot a
reference image, so I found a kid at the event with a light grey shirt
and took a picture. The camera asked if the image was okay and I hit
okay and that was that.

The photos from the event are here: http://www.nickdavidwright.com/page40.html

The lady with the parakeet was the first image shot after setting the
custom WB, everything before was shot on auto and "fixed in post."

I didn't have to tweak the colors of the images shot on custom at all.
I love it.

Small (trouser pocketableish) parcel, containing nothing that will
get you waterboarded or tasered (unless you meet up with the film
police) as at 28/04/2009.
Please contact Joe McAllister (I just know I've spelled that

Many thanks in anticipation.

Name spelled correctly. The package is ready to be shipped, and I
received the funds, thank you.

Isn't Joe coming to GFM?

No, Joe announced a month ago that he would have to miss out on this
years gathering. Funds too drained at this time.

I figure Mark or Doug probably have a legit address I could get this
to tomorrow, or Thursday if they don't take off before then.

OT - I'm Safe Now

2009-04-28 Thread frank theriault
I was getting quite worried about this pig flu thing that I've been
hearing about on the news.

You'll all now be pleased to know that I'm now safe.

One of my bosses just walked into my office and handed me a lively
little pamphlet entitled "Pandemic 101 - the practical way to
prepare". Would I kid you about something this important?

We're going to be getting bottles of hand disinfectant that we're
supposed to use religiously, and we're supposed to bookmark and
regularly check Pandemic 101's News Network:

http://www.pandemic101.com/library/news.asp

Thank God we're being pro-active about this.

cheers,
frank

That would be a waste of time. A quick Google Images search shows
that there are many helpful signs, complete with arrows, to point you
to Einbahnstrasse.

Urban Acid is a Photoshop action (or a Lightroom template) that makes
the photo this blue-greenish color and a bit 'washed'.
HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, which means the photo is made from
more than exposures (+2EV, 0, -2EV in this case). To be viewable on our
monitors (which are 8 bit while HDR is 32 bit / channel) there is a
technique called Tone Mapping. So while it's called HDR picture is just
a Tone Mapped 'Normal Dynamic Range' picture :) HDRs are mostly viewed
in special programs that can dynamically change the 'gamma' of the picture.

RE: Canary Wharf

2009-04-28 Thread Bob W
Yes, it's the same place. In fact, Cotty did not know about the foot tunnel
until this weekend, and know you've posted a photo of the entrance.

This is the Cutty Sark pub, which you may recognise:
http://www.web-options.com/Greenwich/content/_C086771_large.html

When you took that picture you must have been standing in about the same
place I was when I took this, in another direction:

Here's another view of Canary Wharf:
