GESO Tuesday Night Blues Jam

2010-08-11 Thread Larry Colen
I think that I'm starting to get a handle on the lighting at JJ's. For the most
part, I expose for the red channel and let the blue and green fall where they
may. When I do that, I can usually get a pretty clean black and white.
Sometimes the color is such that if I bump the exposure, the red clips and the
highlights show up as a bright yellow. A little tweaking with vibrance and
clarity gives me something that looks like of like a 60's silk screen poster.

Last night I was experimenting with my flash. I don't have it quite nailed
down, but the combination of flash and red stage lights gives kind of a nice
warm tone to the shots that I rather like.

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157624583214413/

This one is kind of cool because where the flash is shadowed but the stage
lights aren't, it look like the mic is glowing in her hand:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/4884104947/

The other thing that I was playing with was using long focal lengths to bring
it in very close to the musicians and to minimize the background clutter. These
were pretty much all shot with my 18-250

Re: Weird lag with p-ttl flash

2010-08-11 Thread Igor Roshchin

Larry, what you describe is not how P-TTL works.
You would have to try hard to notice the pre-flash of the P-TTL.
THe interval between the pre-flash and the flash is just at
the border of what a human eye can resolve.

What you describe sounds like a red-eye-reduction mode.
But even for that, - the first "short wait" is strange
(unless it's due to focusing or due to the battery still charging up
for the pop-up flash, if the shot happened too soon after you popped it
up).

Re: Still "lenses again"

2010-08-11 Thread P. J. Alling
28 is the true normal lens on an APS-C camera. Normal lenses have been
defined as the FL equal to the diagonal of the format. 50~58mm is the
classic normal on 35mm, traditional because that's what was used on
Leica, but the equivalent AOV lens on most any other format would be
considered a short telephoto. A 35mm lens gives you the same AOV on
APS-C. To actually get something wide on a APS-C camera you need to
have a 24mm at the minimum.

Weird lag with p-ttl flash

2010-08-11 Thread Larry Colen
One advantage of being good friends with a band is that you get a lot more
freedom as a photographer. Especially when they love the photos that you take
of them. Last week I was up on stage with them for a while, which allowed me
to actually get some clear shots of the drummer.

Last night another friend of theirs was practicing taking pictures because she
has a front and backstage photo pass to a jazz festival this weekend. She was
shooting with a rebel and a kit lens, and was taking pictures using the pop-up
flash. I decided to try some flash photography myself and found that the best
results seemed to be from using my water jug diffuser with the sides wrapped in
aluminum foil so that it was more of a softbox than a photon grenade.

Rather than my usual habit of using the flash in manual mode, I was using it in
TTL, and I noticed that there was what seemed like a two second shutter lag.
Press shutter, short wait, flash, long wait, click/flash. Is this normal? I've
never noticed such a long delay between the first and second flashes before.
The batteries weren't desperately low, but they weren't completely fresh
either.

You're clicking too much. :) Mouse over the image and you'll see the
cursor become a magnifying glass. Click anywhere on the image and it
loads bigger, on a black bgnd.

Then you can use keyboard shortcuts: eg left and right arrow-keys will
take you back and forth through the images sequentially.

Flickr's never had the best or most clear UI, but I think it's better
featured now anyway.

And this guy's portraits are very nice. He does have a tendency to
center them all in landscape, which is a bit tiresome. Minor nit.

My experience is good (in so far as a broken SDM motor repair can be good).
Johnsons Photopia, the Pentax agent in the UK replaced the "autofocus motor"
in my 16-50. They communicated well, diagnosed the problem properly and
fixed it quickly. 115 GBP is a lot (it was way out of warranty), but it
works well now. Let's hope it stays that way...

One click to see it large now, click on the lightbox icon (Plus sign
inside magnifying glass) between the newer/older links to the upper
right of the image. Also shows the image on a black background whith
almost no extra crud.

The new UI takes a little getting used to, but it's a signficant
improvment once you figure out the basics. That said, I still use

GESO -- Killer PDML dinner in San Francisco

2010-08-11 Thread Igor Roshchin

It was a lot of fun to meet Patsy and William (who is also a
photographer, albeit a non-P one).
and to see again Larry last weekend in San Francisco.

Patsy and William brought us to a nice sushi restaurant in Sunset.

Here is a social gallery:
http://42graphy.org/snapshots/20100808-pdml/
Don't miss the captions.

Here is Jane's (non-P) catch from the same evening:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/29329...@n00/sets/72157624574962485/

You may have seen Larry's set of photos from the same evening
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157624569606083/

In response to Doug's question: the first two photos in that set
were from a different dinner, with Larry and other dancers.
You can see me with the K-7.

In that set, the idea of the 4-cameras lineup was of all of the
participants, but Larry's second camera was the only one that was still
available.
And you can see me "adding the color" to his K-x:

Re: GESO- Boathouse Row

2010-08-11 Thread Rick Womer
Thanks Dan!

The dragon boats have been something of a fad for the last 10 years or so.
They are flat-bottomed tubs propelled by (usually) untrained paddlers. This
group got 15 minutes of dry-land instruction on basic boating safety and how to
hold a paddle, and off they went.

On the plus side, there are a couple of dragon boat races for charity every
year, that have become very popular.

Cheers,

Rick

I like your version better.

I like this as presented. The deep tones and dark mood are appropriate, IMO.
And it's a truly unique structure in and interesting setting. That's enough for
me to make it very worthy.

When Pentax went from a 2 stoke to a 4 stroke engine on the SDM motors.

there's probably some helpful technology crossover available from the
bottled water industry. When I was in France last month a taxi driver took
me past the Quézac spring and bottling plant. Quézac is a very pleasant
water, with very tiny natural bubbles - much smaller than Perrier, for
example. I learned that they take the bubbles out, clean the water, then put
the bubbles back in during the bottling process. I imagine there must be
very large arrays of tiny little pigeonholes in the plant for the temporary
bubble storage - I'm sure it wouldn't too difficult to convert these into
photo sensors of the type you describe.

Incidentally, bubble memory was very popular in computing about 30 or so
years ago, so it isn't the first time this technology has been used for
digital applications.

Cheers!
Bobble

There is something odd about Flickr.
