I've only sold one print, for $100. But it was big (frame 16x20?, something
like that). In a photo show I was in where I sold it (a year ago), I priced
most of my prints between $25-50. There were four photographers in the show
and I had the lowest prices. It is true that mainly just covered my paper and
frames, but I figured I had a better chance to sell that way.

I'll probably hug knowledge of that sale to me forever.

The one who sold best was selling lots of small ones, framed, I think they
were 4X6, or 5x7. Can't remember what she charged. Also photo cards (photos on
stationary). Everyone, including me, was displaying larger. But I think her
prices were right.

Re: How much do you sell your prints for?

2007-09-20 Thread graywolf
$25 is a good price for an event photo, however you expect to sell more than
one
photo from an event.

On the other hand for a so called fine art photo a $100 is dirt cheap. Framed
and matted $200 is dirt cheap. In the couple of places in Boone that sell fine
art photos the prices seem to be between $150 and $350 for a framed and matted
8x10 print. I have seen them with $1000 price tags. Of course, if you are a
"name" you can charge what you want. And also your market affects prices, if
your customers are more affluent you can charge more. The bottom 50% of the
population is not going to pay more than pocket change for a photo just to hang
on the wall and look pretty, you can get more for photos of the kids.

A point to consider is you can always agree to take less than you are asking,
but you can never demand more.

I watched a large (20x24) ornately framed photo of John Wayne go out of a local
store for $3000. The seller told me she paid $1000 for the framing, I have no
idea what she paid for the photo. I doubt the photographer got any money from
that transaction.

Re: How much do you sell your prints for?

2007-09-20 Thread Mark Cassino
I guess I'm bottom feeding, but I sell bagged, signed,
single mat prints for $35 for 11x14 and $50 for 16x20
(that's the matted size - 8x10 and 11x14 (roughly)
prints in each.)

Framed at $75 for 11x14 and $125 for 16x20 - simple
black rail framing.

All are signed, no limited editions. I've been out of
the game for a year or so (starting up again this
fall) but these were for local art fairs, clear bagged
prints in bins. I went for a large variety of prints
and would stock ~250 unique images. On a good day I
could move a few dozen prints, plus lots of note cards
at $3 a pop.

I've sold large (huge) prints in local gallery shows
for as much as $1200 - exquisitely framed and
matted(which means - not done by me.)

My prices are pretty much in line with what I see
locally. These are ink jet prints - hand pulled photos
command a higher price locally - but probably not
enough more to cover the additional cost and time it
takes to produce them.

The economics of selling prints are a bear. Every
print that is sold has to 1) pay for itself in terms
of materials, 2) pay the gallery's share or cover the
entrance fee to the art fair, 3) pay for the time it
took to shoot, adjust, and prep the image, 4) pay for
the prints that don't sell, and 5) pay for production
waste - the miscut mats, gummed up prints, stuff
stolen when your back is turned. And that's not even
tagging the cost of photo gear, insurance, and other
over head to it. #4 is the toughest to figure out -
because on one hand your inventory is an asset, but on
the other as it gets older, it eventually becomes a
liability.

Five dollars per print includes ink cost. The paper is about $2.50 a sheet, so
I'm guessing the ink is about the same.

Paul,

You forgot to count the cost of the printer ink.
I wonder how much that adds to the total cost
(I have no idea how long the cartridges last in R2400).

On a different but related subject, - do you (or anybody else here on the
list) - coat your prints with the UV-protective coatings?
One of the local professional labs that I am offers this option
- to protect the ink from fading.
Any experience with that? Is yes, what do you use and where do you get
the supplies?

Thanks,

Igor

My cost for matting and framing is only $30. Gallery makes some nice wood
frames that sell for around $15, and I use precut mats that sell for $10. I
print my own pigment inkjets on an Epson R2400. So even when using the best
Epson papers my cost is only about $5 a print. The gallery where I sell most
often gets as much as $3000 for some very large prints and typically more like
$500 for a print in the range of 11 x 14. But I have found that it's better to
go for volume. But most of my sales are in conjunction with fee-based shoots,
so the print sales are just gravy on top of the fee. If a subject buys three
prints at $30 per, I pocket an extra $75.

2007-09-19 Thread Adam Maas
That's fairly cheap. I sell (for minimal definitions of sell, I'm not actively
selling prints, but have made sales) 10x15 pigment inkjet prints on 13x19 paper
for $175, unmatted. As I don't do my own printing above 8.5x11 size, my cost
there is around $80 to get the image printed professionally. I haven't priced
out matted & framed, but I'd probably go in the $250-300 range depending on
framing costs.

I base my pricing on what photographers I know who are actively selling charge.
That said, I do live in a much larger art market than you(Toronto, which has a
very strong market for Photography including a major month-long yearly
Photography festival, Contact), so I suspect my market allows for higher
pricing.
