Manual mode is what I do mostly with them. They work predictably and
consistently that way, for me. More than one and P-TTL is pretty much
useless.

BTW: I cleaned all the battery contacts with a contact cleaner last

Also, give all the contacts (eg inside the battery compartment) a good

Re: Enabled sigma 80-200 2.8 APO DG HSM EX

2011-06-09 Thread Thibouille
If I remember correctly as for the Sigma 70-200/2.8, here are the
different modern versions:

- 70-200/2.8 EX DG
- 70-200/2.8 EX DG Macro II (a bit less good than the former)
- 70-200/2.8 EX DG Macro HSM (which really wasn't HSM in its Pentax
version but often refered as being HSM in shops)
- 70-200/2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II (indeed HSM in Pentax version this time)
- 70-200/2.8 DG Macro HSM OS (why not EX, I dunno but OS means
internal stabilization like Canon IS).

Tying in this thread to the "no card in the camera" thread In days of yore,
I taped a couple of film cans to my camera strap, so I'd have fresh film handy.
Shortly after the conversion to digital, I was about to do something similar to
hold SD cards when I got the brilliant idea of calling the camera store, on the
off chance that I wasn't the first one to think of this.

I love these Tamrac straps:
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?client=safari&rls=en&q=tamrac+camera+strap&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=10969499609150346402&sa=X&ei=Fd3CTfvhF4PTiAKQ1fGLAw&ved=0CFwQ8wIwBA#ps-sellers
I carry empty cards in the left pocket, full cards in the right, and if I'm
doing something where the strap gets in the way, I can easily take it off and
put it back on.

They also come in different patterns, colors and styles.

fixed. Lens is 3 years old so well out of warenty. Some 2 months later after not hearing a thing, chased up what was going on. Apperantly the store was noteafied some 6 weeks earlier but noone thought to ring me.
Repair place wanted my body as well because the lens worked on the wide range of cameras they have?! Latter, recieved call saying they are going to send lens to CRK in melbourne. they checked every
combination the repair place has (what ever that means) and said both camera and lens is fine except when together. I asked for my body back because i wanted it for easter. repair place said no, we may need to
replace the lens mount on body. GR!!

So bought the K5to take with me for easter. Very nice camera. Quite an upgrade.
My wife seeing that I have one bought her own K5 thus upgrading from her K100D.
 Bigger upgrade
Now i need to find some way to ID each camera so we can tell them apart at a
quick glance
Also need 2nd batteries, 12v charger , bigger faster cards etc..

I use a short loop of bright colored fine nylon twine through one of the
strap rings on the camera for this purpose. It was a quick "emergency"
solution made in the field some years ago --- while under a lot of
pressure and picking up the "wrong" camera was becoming a really
annoyance. It worked well enough that the loop is still there.

James,
Get a different color camera strap for one of them.
And change the first two letters of the file names it produces.
It's a simple change in the menues and will help you keep track of
who's shots are who's.

Good to hear that you found a way out of your predicament, James.

As for ID'ing the camera, I suggest you take a look at Copyright Info
feature. In a nutshell, you can simply record in camera the name of the
photographer that will automatically be put into metadata of images the
camera would take. This info is also shown by the camera when you review
the "info" of the picture taken with it.

There are of course less geeky way to do it, say, by having slightly
different camera straps. Or by having a grip attached to your camera and
not attaching it to that of your wife, etc.

Very nice. When I had K10D I too had problems, just blamed them on my
technique. Then K20D improved my results and K-5 was a real leap forward. Now
many say that buying new gear is not the answer but in the case of Pentax DSLRs
my experience has been the opposite.

If I had the money, I'd get the W60 in a heartbeat. Ever since the
Optio WR series, Pentax's P&S water resistant/proof cameras have been
utterly fantastic. The 43WR had one of the sharpest lenses I ever saw
on a P&S camera, no exaggeration, and it appears the W series has kept
that optical quality.

As it is, I still need to send a check to the PDMLer who sent me some
cool older stuff last week. My new/old ring flash is a lot of fun. :D

I got my Optio W60 Waterproof point and shoot today.
The price has dropped recently which was a nice
suprise. Unfortunately, B&H doesn't have any Impact
batteries in stock for the camera yet so I'll have to
make do with one battery for now.

This one replaces my venerable Optio W10 which I've
praised and repraised on this list many times. That
camera is going to my wife who's very happy to have
it. It produced something like 30,000+ images for me
and I couldn't be more pleased with it's performance.
I used it last weekend to take underwater video of
myself and the kids in about 5 feet of water. What a
great little camera!

The new model is 10MP and slightly smaller and lighter
than the W10. It has some black plastic on the
exterior (top and a grip on the right front) which is
textured for more solid gripping especially if you
plan on using it underwater or in inclement
weather...and I do! This is a big improvement as the
W10 was not easy to hold when wet or with white gloves
(I wear these when shooting watches to keep skin tones
from reflecting in shiny metals). It also has a larger
display on the back which is supposedly much easier to
view, especially in bright sunlight. The W60 has a
longer OPTICAL zoom range 5-25mm than the W10's
digital zoom (6.3-18.9mm). The lens does not protrude
from the body.

I'm going to shoot some tests with it ASAP and will
post the results here for anyone who's interested. My
hope is that the camera has increased dynamic range
along with it's higher resolution. Highlights could be
a bear to finese with the W10.

Hi all,

yes, it's basically the minimum focussing distance. It's quite sharp
even wide open and goes VERY sharp at f/6.3...f/8.
I've been travelling last days (unfortunately without SLR), but
hopefully this weekend I'll find some hours to spend with this lens again.

Nice shot. I like your solution. Sounds like that would work for me as well.
Looks like some more seldom used equipment goes on the block.

That is nearly the worst advert I've seen on eBay. Just about everything

pre/re-enabled.... I guess

2007-04-06 Thread cbwaters
Some of you may recall the story of my tripod tipping over right after I got
my *ist D. I lost the use of my F 35-135 macro in that incident. The auto
focus quit working because the lens barrel had shifted some.
I was using the lens on the K10 yesterday to take some macro shots, manually
focused and left the lens on the body. When I got home, I was playing with
the camera a little and felt like the lens focused pretty easily so I tried
switching the camera to AF.
Whadyaknow? It works.
It's kind-of funny though. Since I broke this one, I bought another one,
decided it was too heavy and I really didn't like the range all that much on
the DSLR so it went with the *ist D package when I sold it to some nice guy
in Chicago.
Now here I have this lens again...like a bad penny.

But after it is well placed in position there is no problem. It is a

I've received my DA 12-24mm, and I've just shot a few pics. It performs
very
well on all respects, except for a rather evident CA, badly needing
correction in case of large format prints.
All considered, it tastes a lot like the DA 16-45mm, which I love so
much.

Warning: when using it, be careful to let the hood "click" well into its

lock position, otherwise you think its OK while it's not (and the shade
will
be visible in all pictures taken at 12mm). It happened to me.

Cheers,

Dario

Actually, I bought that lens with the body, although after initial

Well the D200 is a very resourcefull camera. A couple of people in my camera
club have it. A couple have a 20D or a 30D. Many have the Konica Minolta
Maxxum 7D (attractive local camera shop offer) and a couple have Pentax'es
(D, DL, K100D) one has a Pentax 6x7. I was the only one using a Pentax for a
very long time. (The days (Seventies) when Pentax sold more cameras than
Canon and Nikon put together, are l o o o o n g gone). They all produce
excellent photographs BTW.

What I really want is a fast camera. Fast AF, FPS and Write Speed. And low
noice. I have heard that the K10D is not much faster than the previous
models. Tha't really bad news. This is where Pentax is really missing out:
3 FPS unlimited (JPEG) and 9 shot RAW burst is good - or at least better.
But certainly NOT pro-level specs.
The D200 does 37 JPEGs and 22 RAWs - is this at the maximum speed at 5 FPS?
That's MUCH better.

Five years ago some Canon digital camera did 8 FPS. It sounded like an Uzi
gun, leaving Pentax miles behind, as far as speed is concerned.
For a pro shooter speed IS an important issue. For me too.

I got an email from someone asking why I'm selling so much gear all at
once, so I think it's time to tell you guys - I bought a D200 a couple
of weeks ago. I was going to wait until after I saw the K10D at Photo
Plus, but I found myself wishing I had the D200 the whole time I was
on vacation, so I ordered it when I came home.

Most of the gear I'm selling is stuff I haven't used much in the last
year or two anyway. I'm going to keep a small Pentax kit for now. I am
interested in some of the new lenses coming down the pike anyway. I
will probably trade my *istD for a K10D once I've seen samples from it
and it is proven to be a good performer (and the price comes down a
bit).

Anyway, that's my story...flame away. ;)

Use the custom settings were you can manually set hue, saturaation,
sharpness etc. Its just above the B&W setting in the menu,

I have everything set at 0 or normal.

It's also incorrect, as far as I know. The AF is (reportedly) significantly
faster than any of the previous bodies. The FPS is reported to be a little
better than 3 fps (some reports suggest as high as 3.5), which is also an
improvement. And the write speed is, with a 150x card or better, good enough
to write JPEGs until the card is full. RAW still stalls after somewhere from
9 to 12 frames (depending on which report you read).

But that won't prevent the wailing and wringing of hands about the failings
of a not-yet-released body.

Sure, I'd like 5 fps for at least 20 frames. And I'm one of the few people
who post to this group who would actually use that feature if it were there.
But I can live without it. And I expect the AF to be a noticeable improvement
over my *ist-D, and to get even better once the new DA* lenses are released.

I already bought the grip. It's too heavy a camera for me to be
comfortable doing portrait-oriented work otherwise.

RE: Enabled - with a D200

2006-11-01 Thread Jens Bladt

will probably trade my *istD for a K10D once I've seen samples from it
and it is proven to be a good performer (and the price comes down a
bit).

Anyway, that's my story...flame away. ;)

The 5D is the Canon body I'd want most (I already have an M42 adaptor
for it). The output is excellent, and it is full frame (Which would be
an advantage for how I'd use it). I'd like a FF body for my Nikon glass
to use alongside my F3 and that's the best option. It would be mostly a
studio/landscape body for me, while the K10D will be used for street work.

It's just a bit pricey for me at the moment.

Congrats.

I have only run about 4500 frames through mine so far, but i like what
i am getting.

Puttuing it through some high ISO this weekend and i will report.

I hummed and hawed about the grip, but it balances the 70-200 Vr lens
well and gives me that D1h D2H etc feel to the camera.

The Nikon rep at GFM suggested the camera functioned best by being "0'd" out.
So far i find that about right.

The vivid can be to vivid i'm afraid.

Works well with the Expodisk and the AWB is pretty good at ~most~
applications.

Enjoy

Enjoy it.

I still want one myself. Even when I do get the K10D, I've got enough
Nikon AI glass that a Nikon digital would see use, and the D200 is a
superb camera.

What I really want as an alternate body to the K10D is a Canon 5D and a
Nikon->EF mount adaptor.

Yes, the screen is really good!
I also like to be able to carry a (subset of) my gallery stuff
with me, so I can alsway view it, or show to others.

Being able to directly read CF and SD cards is great too.
No seperate card-reader needed anymore.

Video is also nice, but I have no real use for it yet.
(Allthough my Optio W10 can create 640x480 video)

I do like the MP3 capability, nice to have your favourite
music with you, and 80Gb is a lot :-)

However, for use with the DSLR (*istD) I did find
a few drawbacks, no dealbreakers but still a bit
of a dissapointment:

- RAW images from the *istD (.PEF) are displayed OK,
but since it simply takes the embedded JPG (640x480 ?),
you CAN NOT ZOOM in on the image to see it in the
resolution of the real image (6 megapixel).
So no way to judge sharpness that way ...
(This works fine with JPG's)

 - The slideshow feature does NOT work with RAW, only JPG
But it is great to show my PUG and holliday galleries,
with Mark Knopfler as background music :-)

 - It does not display 'progressive' JPG files.
Not a problem for camera created ones, but JPG's from
other sources may have been saved that way ...

 - I do find it a bit slow in populating the screen with thumbnails

 - It does NOT display long filenames, which can be a bit
of a nuisance with MP3 music titles. (not a big deal though)

>I'd be happy to answer any questions about
>the device as I learn more about it.

Are you shooting JPG mainly, or RAW ?

I hope the upcoming K10D will support simultanious RAW+JPG
mode, that would make reviewing on the P4000 easier.

If the rumour about using DNG format with is true, I hope the
P4000 will support that too (perhaps with a firmware update :-)
Will test later if the understand the CS2 generated DNG's ...

Overall, I am quite happy with the Epson!

No, but the Nikon FM was similar. Shutter, aperture, focus, wind,
rewind and clutch lock. ASA setting.

The DS has more stuff, but in the end you can operate it in exactly
the same way if you want.

I do the same even now sometimes. Manual focus with a 28mm focal
length ... set f/11, set 12', everything from 6' to infinity is in
focus. No need to deal with AF etc unless you want to. Some people

Hi Ann,

I've had two DS bodies, and I just don't see the battery chamber door as
being fragile. AFAIK, you and Mike Wilson are the only people who've
mentioned that. What about the door seems fragile to you. I need
something new to kvetch about ;-))

Sorry -
I leave windows open a crack at least wherever I am - the ac
works just fine

I prefer outside dust to indoor pollution. In fact there are
two windows that don't close
I put things in front of them in the winter

But my rent is under $500 for 4 rooms and it isn't going up
becuse i'm old
so hey, I'm pretty happy here.

The sales guy actually agreed that it was particularly

Did you ever have a KX or a K-1000? REmember , except for
briefly, I never
had anything that was auto for years - xcept for a light
meter... I never
had auto focus lenses and I never used the LX in auto mode
nor did I even
own a flash.

WHen I shot film my mainstay was the 1.4 50mm and my 100
macro which I still have
occasionally the 28mm got used -- and used more the harder
it became for me to focus -
I'd just st the hyperfocal distance thingy on f8 and let her

No. I find people's reactions to things very interesting.

Well, different strokes. Personally, I find the Pentax DS very much
alike to my old Nikon FM/FE2 and use it in much the same way. Of
course, it has a lot more features which I use when it seems
appropriate, but overall I just take pictures with it and consider
the SD card the equivalent of film, only I don't have to do film
processing. Photoshop and the Epson printer operate as I used a
darkroom in eons gone past ... only the results are better but I'll
leave that argument to others to natter over ;-) ... Never could
stand what photofinishers did with my photos so that option was never
acceptable for me.

I never read the warnings in the manuals and so far have not
destroyed either of the bodies. Nor found them unresponsive in the
same conditions I used all my other cameras over the years so I don't
know what all the warnings in the manuals are all about. Yet more
evidence of a deranged society's need for abundant over-
protectivisms, I suspect.

Curious that you focus on the battery door so much. I've not found it
to be fragile at all. With 16,000+ exposures on two DS bodies,
swapping NiMH batteries out every week for charging most of the time,
I've certainly exercised the door quite a bit on both and it doesn't
seem to be having any problems that I can tell.

Once you have a DS set up the way you want, you almost never need to
go into the main menu to do anything. It would be nice if the meter
pattern selector and focus mode selector was in the Fn menus like the
ISO and drive modes, but I hardly ever change the settings anymore.
Most of what I touch is
   - the exposure mode selector for Tv-Av-M,
   - the aperture-shutter-exposure comp thumbwheel and button,
   - the Fn menu for ISO setting,
   - and the AF-MF switch
(at which point I also use the lens' focusing ring in MF mode). Seems
pretty close to what my film cameras had except for the AF-MF switch.

Personally, I prefer ring-operated zooms, push-pull zoom controls are
difficult to use with precision. But I rarely use zoom lenses anyway,
I have three but only really use one of them (the FA20-35) with any
frequency. I usually just set a focal length and then start framing
and shooting ... in other words, it's like having four primes in one
lens.

Anyway, you like and want what you like and want. "No matter where

It's the way the bells and whistles work and the existence
of them
- The LX is simple - I never owned an auto anything camera
until 1996 - I got a ZX-5 - thinking I did need to be able
to auto focus sometimes as my eyes are going

I can shoot with a manual camera without looking at the
controls,
I can tell how fast I'm shooting without looking at
anything, I can shoot if the meter dies, I can tell which ap
I'm at without looking at the ap ring -- I 've had the LX
for 20 years and
before that 2 KX's which I like even better but the LX did
some neat stuff the KX couldn't.

I only went digital to start with because of selling stuff
on ebay and my photo finisher
going out of business (he was a block away - did every thing
I wanted him to and got stuff
back to me instantly if not sooner.)

and the money crunch... I also felt I needed ONE digital
camera to do quick work for profit
and it certainly is easier to get stuff up on my computer
for ebay pics

It took me months to adjust to the power shot A80 - then
about a month to get a bit
comfortable with the PRO-1 --

I accepted working with auto focus because my eyes wont do
the job looking through a
viewfinder... everything tiny and dark

I know you don't know me in person and haven't known me long
on the list, but the
old timers here (HAR) will remember how I kicked to the
north and screamed to the
south I wouldn't get dragged into digital. Given unlimited
funds (which , of course,
I will win tonight in the lottery) I'd have my LX and KX's
repaired to brand new,
buy and Optio, and a tiny spy camera, and 100 rolls of PKR64
if there is any left in
the world, and extra computer, etc... but I don't so I'm
compromising.

I've gotten fond of the Canon - I don't use half its
capabilities, but it works for me.

The DS is physically difficult for me to hold - it is just
heavy enough to hurt my
shoulder and back after about 30 seconds... (I'm a mass of
old broken limbs and back)

There is too much of a learning curve for me on all the tech
stuff - and it seems, in fact,
that I CAN'T just hook the camera up to the computer

20 years ago I could cope with the problems - I can't these
days and remain cheerful and sane.

Objectively I see the following things wrong that I imagine
anyone would be annoyed with

(1) the battery is extra fragile because of the way it is
constructed,
(2) things that you might
want to do quickly require getting into the menu and
scrolling (like that on the PRO-1,
too, but I've got the pattern in my head now )

The zoom lenses (including the one I might keep)
work by turning instead of back and forth to zoom - which I
would often screw up when
I was using one of my old lenses that worked that way - zoom
when I meant to focus, focus
when I meant to zoom - by by shot... I just couldnt do it.

I found the LCD screen difficult to see - not nearly as
sharp and bright as my Canon.
The control buttons are mostly black.
The trash button is just below the menu button.

And there were a gazillion warnings about it's stability or
lack there of in cold weather.

and I'm a klutz, too

a digital SLR in a place that is dusty all the time is also
an accident waiting to happen
my windows, even with ac on, are always open and I live in
Manhattan surrounded by
buildings being torn down and put up

Ha - bet you are sorry you asked!

I babble when I'm upset - and this has been one hellofaday
dealing with friends
problems as well as my camera woes

so there :):)

Sales of 'prosumer class' fixed lens digital cameras are down quite a
bit since DSLRs approached the $500 price bracket. Kind of a shame as
some of the better cameras in the class are very capable and provide
features that DSLRs do not. I still have my Konica Minolta A2, my
favorite of the class that the Pro-1 was a part of, and recently
purchased the Sony DSC-R1, which is a bit beyond either of the above
due to its much larger sensor. Both of them are very fine cameras for

What I am curious about is that you seem comfortable enough with the

Yup

It is the one I got and have had for a year

I love love love it

and why they stopped making it I jsut don't know...

The successor to it doesn't have the flip out screen -
The flip out screen for me is the best thing since sliced
bread

It keeps me from rubbing my nose on an LCD which keeps the
LCD clear
and it twists to many angles so I can essentially shoot
around corners
or not have to lie down on the ground to get a very low
