Thanks to everybody who helped with my question. I bought a 2mp Nikon Coolscan 2200, which was very cheap and seems to do what's needed. It has a decent little zoom, is small, light and easy to operate. I took 31 pictures with it this afternoon, in rather flat, dull light - the sun went in when I walked out of the camera shop! It's very different from using a manual film SLR. Framing is different; I have to get used to autofocus; the lens is very slow and the sensitivity of the camera is the equivalent of ISO 50, so it's very slow too; and the shutter lag is not what I'm used to. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable to use and should serve its purpose very well. Here are some snaps, resized and sharpened with Irfan, otherwise straight from the Nikon's mouth: http://www.web-options.com/AES/p006.jpg http://www.web-options.com/AES/p009.jpg http://www.web-options.com/AES/p014.jpg http://www.web-options.com/AES/p024.jpg http://www.web-options.com/AES/p029.jpg http://www.web-options.com/AES/p030.jpg -- Cheers, Bob

And if you would like to print the occasional 8"x12" print then a 2MP camera would still deliver a reasonable 150dpi. Re: Any compact digitals with wide-angle lenses?
My wife had me look for one several months ago. I was surprised to find that the last compact/pocket digital that went as wide as 28mm was the 1.3MP Canon PowerShot A50, which was introduced 5 or 6 years ago. The Ricoh G4 Wide had also recently been annnounced at the time, but with no plans to sell it here in the USA. The press release for the G4 Wide mentioned a predecessor model that was just as wide, but all I ever found on that earlier model was variations on the press release. I found an A50 on eBay for about $50. The shutter response is glacial by today's standards (even after pressing the shutter button halfway), and 4x6 prints were just okay. My wife is okay with it, but maybe she'll try the Ricoh G4 Wide sometime. Looks like it's available from Australia for AU $466 (US $321): http://www.sydneyshopping.com.au/product_detail.php?pID=472 Also there are two G4 Wides on eBay right now for US $259.99. RE: Wide angle lenses
Hi, Taka. I use it in LX and ME Super with great results. The manual focus feeling is better than most af lenses but not up to the feeling of a real manual focus lens. It's excellently constructed, feels nice and it's not expensive for what it gives. It's the price you pay for a 1 stop slower used lens. BUY IT Albano Can anyone w/ experience w/ this lens tell me whether it is difficult to use in MF mode or not? 24mm f2.0 IF SMCP-FA Thanks, Taka - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: RE: Wide angle lenses
There's a reason why the older lenses come at a premium. They are much nicer to use than the new ones, especially in MF. Think about that. Ten years from now, I'll bet the manual focus will be worth more than you are paying for it. The autofocus lens, though nice right now, will likely be in pieces. Just my opinion... Re: Wide Angle lenses
If you're worried about a 24/2 being a brick, I don't think that you want a F5. The thing to remember about used Nikon equipment is that although there is a great deal out there, it's not cheap. However, there are many lenses which are rare for Pentax and common for Nikon, and these are quite a bit cheaper than Pentaxes (I can't believe the prices for 85/1.8 & 105/2.8 Pentax lenses. Nikon 85/1.8 & 105/2.5's can be had for under $200.) BTW, the A24/2.8 is just about the same size and weight as a 50/1.4; it's also very good. From: "TM" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Ron- Thanks. Money is definitely a consideration in this whole thing- sorry to say, but if it were not a consideration, I'd have a bunch of Nikons- FM-3, F5, F100 and a ton of lenses. In other words some have a relatively precise focus feel and more worn/used units have exhibited problems such that the clutch loses grip and the ring has to be turned further than would normally be required. I can state absolutely that the tactile response of the manual focus lens is superb and that although it might not be quite as good a performer as the FA lens. It is still no slouch and is very sharp and contrasty stopped down a little and is a good performer wide open. It also provides the added benefits of being very compact and a little lighter, plus it's black :-) If you are buying used the hood is mostly included with the FA lenses whereas I've never seen a hood sold with a K or KA 24mm and it took me a long time to track down the rectangular Pentax one. RE: Wide angle lenses
Same here Paul. Vice versa, I've found using MF lens on AF body "cognitive dissonance" (LOL, may I borrow this phrase ;-). For example, I was using my SMC Pentax-M 100mm f/2.8 and my Pentax-F 24-50mm f/4 zoom combo for while. After a while, I gave up on using the 100mm because I found it much slower to get focus right than on my old split-image/microprism screen of my ancient MX! Call it the "idiot-light" focusing if you will :-(. Also, those old MF lenses (M or A) annoyingly fail to show the aperture settings in the viewfinder (in aperture priority AE and manual) on the AF bodies :-(, something I've gotten totally spoiled since the MX ;-). It took me 10 years to find mine (mint condition) at a photo show (before eBay that is)! Personally, I don't like using zoom on my MF body and all of my zoom goes onto my PZ-1 body. But if you consider a zoom, how about the new 24-90mm? I'm drolling all over one thinking about it ;-). Just one of my 24 opinions, Ron B[ee] The Pen(tax) Pal -- Hi all- What do you all recommend for a good wide-angle lens? The only new lens I can find wider than 28mm that isn't really expensive is the 24mm f2.0 SMCP-FA IF lens that B&H sells for $350. Any experience w/ this lens? I'll be using it on a MF camera (Super A, Super Program), so if the focus ring has a super-short travel, I'm in trouble. Taka - - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. RE: Wide angle lenses
Tom- That's exactly the info I need- is the FA24/2.0 fine to use MF? I don't really care if the focus ring doesn't feel as "nice," more worried about the "throw" of the ring and if it's amenable to fine focusing- I've read here about some of the AF lenses having a very short range of focus ring motion, making it very hard to focus in MF mode. This would obviously be more of a problem with a long lens, but you get the idea. Thanks. Taka - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. "Difficult" is a relative term. What someone may think is difficult could be easy for you. Maybe you can find someone that has one and give it a try. Suppose someone tells you it's difficult to use with MF, and you pass it up. You will miss out on a very sharp, and fast 24mm Lens just because you based your decision on somebody else's opinion. Opinions are like a**holes. Everybody has one. It's the most popular lens in the PDML. What more do you want? RE: Wide angle lenses
Shel- Very good advice, but there is a problem- I can't handle these lenses locally unless I go to NYC (I'm not doing that), so it's very difficult for me to really do much "hands-on" evaluation other than to actually buy the lens and use it. The main thing I'm concerned with about the FA lens is that it may not work well w/ a MF camera. As for the reason for wanting this lens- I need a 24mm wide-angle, as I've found even a 28mm doesn't quite cut it when you're in close quarters and trying to photograph a car w/o having to stand back and get annoyed every time someone gets in your field of view. I don't think I really need a f2.0 lens, it's just that this one is readily available and the older 24mm f2.8 really isn't much less money- KEH is selling the K24 for $310, B&H is selling the FA24/2.0 for $349.99. For $50 more, I'll take the brand new lens and the faster lens. If the K24 was $200, I'd get it w/o question, esp. if it came w/ hood. Unfortunately, I can't speak to the 24mm as the widest I currently have is a 28mm. I am awaiting delivery of a 19mm prime Vivitar f3.8 lens though. I don't need the speed of the 24mm (or the auto focus for that matter) and the used Vivitar cost me a lot less than half the B&H price that you quote for the 24mm and offers a wider field of view. I'll report once I get it. Cheers, Dave Hi all- What do you all recommend for a good wide-angle lens? RE: Wide-angle lenses on bellows/tubes
HI Scott and all I'm not an expert. But I think the explanation is very, very simple. The close up table has a subtitle: (Use of lenses in normal position). Now, why would yuo want to use a wide angle in normal position? It woun't enlarge much (if anything). You'll find the wide angles (28mm-40mm) in the "Use of lenses in reverse position" tables. The wide angles will enlarge more in reverse than the 50mm lenses.
