Vs: Vs: Your all time favourite lens....

2001-03-29 Thread Raimo Korhonen

The 1.7/50 M lens I tested some time ago and found out that the 3.5/35-105 SMC-A is
slightly sharper and the 4/28-70 FA slightly less sharp at 50 mm at comparable
apertures.
Now when I compared the new 24-90 to these two zooms I found out that at the close
focusing distances the new lens is slightly sharper and again the 28-70 mm slightly
less sharp compared to the 35-105. At f:8 the differences were minimal - and remember
that the 28-70 is a very good lens.
All the best!

I bought that cult lens (Kiron 28-210) and it has performed nicely in

RE: Your all time favourite lens....

2001-03-27 Thread Matamoros, Cesar A.

Tanya,

My most favorite lens is my SMC-A 50/1.4. It is not as small as my
A1.7 but it does make for a nice small photo package. It also allows me for
less available light photography since I do not tend to use flash much.

I had to think about my most favorite, but once I looked at the lens
and saw how I have worn out the paint in a few places that told me that
usage must point to favoritism.

In terms of zoom lenses, it has to be the SMC-A 70-210/4. It has
fantastic sharpness and the color rendition is better than my SMC-A
28-135/4. I have gotten great comments on shots from this lens that rivals
the shots from my SMC-A* 300/4.

FA*80-200/2.8

I've just used this lens on my Z-1p and my MX back to back. It's very
fast from the Z-1p, very quiet, very nice to work with.

On the MX, once focused, I can snap it back to AF mode, effectively
locking the focus and just worry about composition.

This lens is expensive, hard to find, heavy, burdened with features
you'll never use but, wow, it is sharp and well featured. If you want
an 80-200/2.8 for Pentax and you see one of these, go get it. You'll
always regret it if you don't. This lens is rock solid and superbly
usable on any Pentax. I want an adapter to use this on my P6x7.

put the vertical grip strap on the Z-1p and it handles beautifully.
It uses every feature of the camera, you get 3d metering, just like an
F5. (I think the Z-1p+FA*80-200/2.8 is the same weight as an F5 with
the Nikon 80-200/2.8 lens. This is just a field comparison when my
mate said "I need Astia but I've just loaded Velvia. What's in
yours?"
  "Astia."
"Lets swap. How do the controls work?"

End result: he thought the Z-1p was a very easy camera to use and I
thought the same of the F5. Nicely balanced too.)

The same guy did drool alarmingly over my P6x7, but with an F5 and an
F100 he ain't going to go 35mm Pentax.

My all time favorite lens is the A 50mm F1.4. It's a great little fast
lens. Call me a heretic but #2 is the Sears 135mm F2.8 Macro, followed
closely by the M 28mm F3.5.

Nice question, difficult answer.
I have too many lenses, and too many of them are favourite in their own way.
I love my first Pentax lens, a KM 50/1.7 n. 6131... (yes, I almost remember
its matriculation number), and my FA 50/1.4.
My favourite zoom is the KA 70-210/4, although it's rather heavy and long (an
FA* version, maybe macro 1:2, would probably be my favourite lens ever).
Among the wide angle lenses I'd choice the K 24/2.8.
They are all sharp, very well built, and together form a perfect set of
lenses. But...
If I must limit to one lens (now it's getting hard...) I'd choice the 645
120/4 Macro. It's a tank, has a magnification of 1:1 and can fit my 135 bodies
with adapter.
This does not mean that I won't change my mind tomorrow :)

Zoom: The 75-150/f4 M.
Sharp, very versatile, compact, not overly heavy, nice feel to it. Great
daylight lens... Built in hood allows almost no flare ever. Easy to zoom and
focus with one touch. It's not a macro, but 150mm at 24" sure looks close
enough to it. (And it cost me $53!?)

Prime:FA 50/1.4
Very sharp, nice color representation. Quick and easy to focus manually.
It's not cheap, but not bad either at <$200. And it just about abolishes
flash! Best in the world, maybe, for natural light at night...

(Actually this was not a very hard question for me to answer, as these are
(currently) my only two lenses...)

Anyway, my favorite is the SMX Pentax A* 200mm f4 macro ED

Why? Well I like macro shots (and shooting) a lot. And this 200mm is just a perfect
focallength for small flowers, insects, fungus and such, because you have a large
working distance and a lot of control over the background.

I use it a lot from a sturdy tripod, but also free-hand combined with the AF140C

some details on how good it is wide open at infinity (astrophoto etc).
I will wait to see if/when Pentax releases the possible 18...20mm Limited

Hi,

My favourite zooms were the SMC-M 24-35/3.5 and the SMC-A 70-210/4.
The shorter zoom was up there close to being my favourite lens, too.

The primes I liked best were the SMC-K 28/2, SMC-M 35/2, the SMC A*
85/1.4 and the SMC-A 400/5.6.

This does not necessarily mean that these provided the best optical or technical
quality, but rather that I enjoyed using them, got a high percentage of good
photos from them, and found their handling to be excellent.

Your all time favourite lens....

2001-03-25 Thread Tanya & Russell Mayer

Ok, so this topic has probably been done to death, but seeing as I am new
around here, I would be interested to know the following from whoever cares
to respond

What is your alltime favourite Pentax compatible lens? And why is it your
favourite?

I don't care if it's 100 years old or was released last week, whether it is
screw or K mount or whether it is AF or MF. It can even be a third party
lens, as long as it is compatible to Pentax bodies.

I am asking this purely for selfish reasons so that I can learn more about
the range and about the qualities that the favourites possess. However, I
will keep all of the responses in a separate folder and if anybody wants me
to, I can post them at a later date.

Thanks in advance.
