Amateurs. Crashplan without a crashplan, or just shitty infrastructure.
 Fire someone.

Thanks for sharing some reality!

/me mentally scratches crashplan from existence

Personally it's hard to want to replicate my personal data with an
external entity in most ways or forms. I played with spideroak (decent
linux client), but don't use them for anything really. I don't
replicate data that isn't within my admin control or across a vpn. Not
to mention wanting to pay for off-site replication of tb's worth of data
"securely" with guise. Most will answer a subpoena in 2 seconds with a
disk image of your all your data on it, and that is not cool. Sadly
it's simply a matter of paying someone enough to get it, and there are
far richer than myself seeking fun and profit.

Dealing with enterprise network, storage, or whatever for a bit - shit
happens. Replicate your data, trust nothing but yourself.

Almost why one might keep a small ebay'd data center around, just in
case. Two, if you got em.

Crashplan offers a seed service, where you can request an external
hard drive be sent to you, you put all of your data on it, and mail it
back. It can be faster than waiting to upload everything.
Additionally, if you need to recover, then can send you the hard drive
with your data on it for fast recovery.

So, I received an email from Crashplan that my data was on a corrupted
disk volume. They are working to recover it, but until then, they are
backing up all of my data to another disk. In addition, they offered
this seed service for free since their volume died. I have additional
backups so I am not concerned regarding data loss or slow uploads, but
its cool to have a slick method of seeding your data.

Thanks,
Eric

If you visit your safe deposit box more than N times/year, the bank charges
you $M per visit. This is suboptimal. Cheaper option is to encrypt the
disks, meet a friend every week, and swap encrypted disks, so you've got your
stuff in your friend's offsite location and he's got his disk at your place.
(This fails in case of Godzilla, enormous meteorites, or if your friend works

I also use Crashplan. It is really good. My only issue with it is it runs
on java and it takes 50MB of memory and it strains my old NAS (yes its that
old).
Other than that, its really good.

If you push to their cloud, you get access to your files via an iPhone app
(probably Android too, but not sure).

Its all encrypted too, 448 bit.

They have support for Linux/Mac/Win and have multiple ways of actually
storing your data. Peer to peer is free, and you only get charged for what
you send to their datacenter.

It's worked great and the client doesn't suck.

Re: Suggestions for a reliable Cloud backup solution

2013-02-20 Thread Stephen
You can take a look at bitcasa. I was working on their beta and while they
have some interesting data models their uptime and accessibility was good.
Not sure if they have pricing up quite yet however.

Suggestions for a reliable Cloud backup solution

2013-02-20 Thread Wayne Davis
I'm looking for a inexpensive Cloud bases backup solution for Linux
/ Win / Android. Thinking about 1 TB will be needed.
This will be used to backup important Business data as well as various
stuff on multiple platforms.

I NEARLY jumped on JustCloud until I did a little research JUST
before plunking down my CC. Seems many folks are NOT happy campers over
at JC land.
With that exception, and it s a big one when you can't get your stuff
that was supposedly safe.

So, I'm _sure_ someone _here_ has a good solution. One they use
either professionally or privately where they have _actually_ had to get
files back from the cloud and were able to.

SO... thoughts?

Wayne
