a 190 or 5300 go wireless. I'd much appreciate any leads or tips!

	JimWG
Jim,

I'm using a Proxim Skyline 802.11b card in my 5300cs. Works like a
charm. The drivers work for the 190 and 5300. Here's where I bought
it:

http://www.emicrox.com/eShop/product.aspx?cid=-1&more=1&keywords=skyline+802.11b&pid=875478

$20 plus shipping, and they got mine to me pretty quicky. Can't go wrong, IMO.

> With the 6x cd drive that came with me PB1400cs/117 should I be able to
> play VCD's with reasonable performace?

I kind of doubt it. I can do it on a 3400c/240, but only if I don't try to
do anything else with the system while it's playing. I bet a 1400/117 would
choke on a VCD, but I could be wrong. I am sure someone on here has tried it
before.

As Cameron said, the CPU is your bottleneck, not the CD-ROM drive. Playing
VCD-encoded video is a processor-intensive task, and a stock 1400/117 is a
weakling.

Re: Souping up 190 to a 5300

2004-02-17 Thread KG
If you want to turn your 190 into a 5300, you can do it just as easily by
buying a 5300 motherboard and installing it into your 190 case, as to try to
find one of those upgrade cards which are very rare. The 190 and 5300, as I
understand it, are basically the same system with a different CPU attached.

If you are running 68K programs, the 190 can actually be faster than a 5300
because of the latter's lack of an L2 cache. For a 5300 to run optimally,
you need to stick to PPC-native apps and run OS 8.1 with Speed Doubler, or
max out the RAM and run 8.6. OS 8.6 is a resouce hog, but can be dealt with
by culling all the unnecessary extensions. You can even run 9.1, although
not great, if you do that.

I have a 5300c/100 with 40 megs of RAM; it stays at 8.1 with Speed Doubler.
If I had a 190, I would also run it at 8.1, which is very usable on a
late-model 68K 'Book.

Souping up 190 to a 5300

Greetings All:

I'm monitoring eBay, but if anyone comes across a PB 190 PPC
upgrade card (or even the infra-red card) at dirt cheap prices please
alert me. (My PB 190 is a sentimental unit so I'm into upgrading it,
not replacing it.).
I'm also interested in hearing from 5300 people on just how
fast and stable is OS 8.6 on it (since it's so loaded down with OS
9.0 type features), or I maybe should save the OS upgrade bucks and
just stick with running OS 8.1 far faster on my 190 with a PPC
upgrade.

Sure were! I've got a couple of different types, one a small box scarcely
bigger than the HD, with M and F DB-25 connectors, the other a larger
dealy more like a regular external scsi HD box only smaller. I have
extras of both jobbies if yer interested, reply off-list of course. :-)

As someone mentioned, you can also use a 2.5"-to-3.5" adapter to install
a 2.5" drive on 'regular' 50 pin IDC-type intyernal connector. I've
bought this item from these folks, though I'm having a heck of a time

I just saw a couple on eBay in the last two weeks, they went cheap

Connect the two macs via a local talk cable or a phone net cables as
seen near the bottom of this page:

 a
buck for a phone net adapter is a good price.

If you have a local Mac Users group, contact them, I'll bet at least
one person has a pile of phone-net connectors in the dark recesses of
their closet. The LEM swap list would be a good place to get some,
cheap.

(I've seen people offer 'em for shipping alone)

Here's a primer on networking via Localtalk

Phone net works similarly, except you have the connectors like seen in
the first web page and run standard phone cords between them. That's
probably the cheapest route.

You can also do some pretty cool stuff with phone net, like using
unused lines in your building's phone network to run it; I've seen some
rather complex networks set up with it, and considering it was in 1986,
when PC users thought 'ethernet' meant a clandestine drug ring for
procuring anesthetic, and network meant one of the three TV channels
you got that wasn't UHF, it's an astonishing thing.
