Re: WANTED: PowerBooks, ANY CONDITION, prefer 1993-1997 'Books

2005-01-05 Thread Michael Druckenmiller Jr.
A good friend has a 520c, I know he'd be willing to part with.

I replaced the internal video cable in it as it was torn, but I believe that
when it was torn it shorted and took out the video chip on the main board, I am
not sure though, it could be one of the boards inside the screen housing. The
lcd is good, but it is not getting a video signal. The system still boots up,
you just can't see what your doing with it rendering it useless, but it does
still have lots of good parts in it, and a working 7.5 install on the drive..

Make an offer.

5300CE power up problem

2004-12-28 Thread Michael Druckenmiller Jr.
I store my battery out of the notbook with the cover on it. This is a known
good battery that is fully charged.

This past weekend we had Ice here that took down power all day saturday, I
tried putting the battery in the PB to do some work on it while the power
was down. As I said the battery was charged, however the computer would not
turn on. I held the reset button for 30+ seconds and retried to power it on,
but nothing worked. When the ac adapter is plugged in it comes right up, and
then as long as the battery is not removed afte the ac power is disconnected
the book will run off of the battery just fine, even after it has been
turned off and stored over night with the battery in it. the problem only
arises if the battery has been romoved.

What do I need to do to get the thing to work correctly, the book is useless
if it doesn't start up on the battery, especially when the power is out.

thanks,
Mike

Re: 5300CE ethernet

2004-10-29 Thread Michael Druckenmiller Jr.
OK, it's going.

Albeit slow, it is working. I can get online via my dsl line now. One
complaint... S-L-O-W... probably netscape though, I downloaded IE 5, I'm
going to see how it works. I really need to pick up an OS8 cd so I can do a
fresh install, that would also help a great deal I'm sure.

I don't know if it is a lag between the mac's ethernet and the router, or
netscape itself.. maybe i'd do better to set-up a proxy to access the net
through from the mac?

OK,

I completely deleted ALL previously installed GV software, and re-installed,
this time without the pccard in. Now after re-start it works. router show
link and everything... now all I have to do is figure out why I can't get
into tcp/ip control panel to set it up so I can use my DSL.

Currently working on it.

I am having problems getting it set-up. After installing the mac software
for the Modem/ethernet car, when I insert it it says the correct software
for this device is not installed would you like to eject it now? I cannot
get into the tcp/ip control panel either. it says something about the tcp/ip

All I know is the guy I bought it from downloaded all fo the softaware from

I need help with this, I have no idea why it isn't working.

Thanks, Picked one up on Ebay this morning for $25. It the 56k modem and
Ethernet in one, it's got the mac cd and the 2 pc floppies with it, which
means I can use it in the PB and in My Compaq 'sario notebook as well.

I had a regular GV A956 56k modem but didn't have the cable the you plug the
phone line into. Also have a TrueMobile 1150, one day I'll have a wireless
router in the house, probably when I get my g4 Ibook.

Thanks again,

5300CE ethernet

2004-10-26 Thread Michael Druckenmiller Jr.
I would like to be able to connect my pb5300 up to my home ethernet so I can
make use of my DSL line on it, as I have no other way to get software and
files over to it.

Does anyone know of any good 10/100 ethernet pccards that have mac drivers.
My two linksys cards are not mac compatible, so they don't help. Would the
PB be decent on the DSL line, it has to be faster than dialup, even on that
slow machine. If anyone has a eth. card they'd like to sell at a reasonable
price email me.

Thanks

Re: 5300 ce

2004-10-21 Thread Michael Druckenmiller Jr.
Well,

I got the PB back up and running on os8.1. Here's the trouble I had to go to
to do it.

When I first had gotten the PB I stuffed the system folder and spanned it
and copied it to my pc, on several floppies, for use in Basilisk II for
windows. Well I was able to burn the Mac OS 8 Basilisk .dsk file onto a cdr
using Alcohol 120%, you just burn it like an ISO, the mac will read it. So,
I booted to my external SCSI bay with the hard drive from my Performa 6115cd
in it, and was able to overwrite the os 7 system folder with os 8.1 that I
copied from Basilisk, this time I left the main drive formatted with mac os
standard, that way it wont be such a hassle to maintain later on.

Once I had the book up and running again, I downloaded the newer (not os 7)
version of disk first aid. I copied the 8.1 system folder over the the
performa's harddrive in the external enclosure, and hooked up the crashed
harddrive. Booted to the SCSI and attempted to repair the damaged IDE drive,
well it is so bad off that disk first aid can't even mount it to repair it,
so my only option there is to reformat it.

Ok I did have my apps and all backed up on another SCSI drive, so I
connected it up in the external SCSI bay after booting to the good IDE
drive, all in all I'm back up and running 8.1 after many hours of work, all
that's left is to put the book back together...

I plan on getting an OS 9.1 cd and upgrading to that, I've herd it may
actually be faster because 8.5 and up are true PPC os's, don't know how true
that is.

Re: 5300 ce

2004-10-19 Thread Michael Druckenmiller Jr.
I have the 2.5" to 3.5" adapter, due to my need to be able to connect up my
other laptop's drive. I also already have the external cd-rom drive,
however, it is a non-apple drive and the apple cd-rom extension does not
work correctly with it, I can boot to it if a bootable cd is in it, but just
trying to use it with the system running, it doesn't work. Is there a way to
boot to an external SCSI drive on the 5300, I can't remember if the backup
drive has a sys on it or not...

I got the demo of Mac Drive and hooked up the hdd. MacDrive doesn't
recognize it as a mac disk though. I guess I will just have to wait until I
get an os 8 cd, then I'll put the drive back in the pb.

Disktools on the 7.5 cd was able to find errors on the disk but said it was
not able to repair it, most likely due to the HFS+ format that is on it.

2004-10-19 Thread Michael Druckenmiller Jr.
The system froze up real bad so I hit the reset button. I guess it must have
wiped some data from the hard drive, because when it started to come back up
it would boot all I got was the disk with the question mark. The pb had OS
8.1 on it and it was formatted with the extended FS, plus my other macs only
have SCSI so I have no way to back up anything that is left on the drive, my
main machine is a pc.

I installed a spare 1.3 gig mini ata drive in it and loaded 7.5.3 from the
cd-rom, that is the newest I have. I had a ton of software on the drive, i
had graphics and documents as well, and no way to get them back, unless
someone has an idea of how to mount the drive in a pc to back it all up, if
I could get it mounted somehow in win xp I could copy the stuff to a
basilisk hardfile and then use Alcohol 120% to burn the hard file to a cd,
then I'd be all good to go. I tried in redhat 8 and it wouldn't mount it.

Re: IBM formatted hard drive

2004-05-20 Thread Michael Druckenmiller Jr.
You wont be able to do it using the original version of drive setup, unless
it is an apple harddrive. HOWEVER, there is good news, there is a hacked
version of Drive setup available on the net, as well as instructions on how
to "hack" it yourself using resource editor, so it will allow you to
partition and format the drive...

I know this can be done, I did it in my Classic II I just forgot the
links... Maybe somebody knows, or you can search for it Try searching in
google for drive setup.

Just try it one time without the battery and see what happens.

PB 520c screen doesn't work.

I aquired a PB 520c by chance, actually I bought a truck and it kinda came

didn't display video, just the backlight. It is still doing this, and now
that it is my book I want to try to fix it. as far as I know the screen is
fine. Powerbookguy said he thought it was the inverter board inside the
screen case How would I test itto make sure that's what it is before I
spend any money on it?

Re: Attaching a SCSI CD-Rom to a 5300 - need instructions for buddy

2004-02-08 Thread Michael Druckenmiller Jr.
You need a SCSI external CD-Rom drive, and to connect it, you'll need a
HDI-30 to Centronics-50 scsi cable.
http://www.powerbookguy.com/5300.html#accessories has them new for $24.95,
and used ones for $12.95. I have bought from him before and recieved the
item promptly, and it was what and how I intended..

That's the hardware you will need, I think the only software you need is the
cd-roms extension, which should be installed already.

I have a 5300CE and that's the setup it uses.

Re: TAKE ME OFF THIS FUCKING LIST NOW!!!!!!!

2004-02-04 Thread Michael Druckenmiller Jr.
I don't appreciate that kind of language being sent in a message, much less
the subject line of an email. that was very inconciderate and very rude.
What if my kid had been doing email when that message came? I am sure there
are plenty of people who feel the same way.

Re: Best 68k Powerbook?

2004-01-26 Thread Michael Druckenmiller Jr.
I had a 520c for a while until the power inverter for the lcd went bad, I
just gave it to a friend.

It seemed to be a decent laptop, it had I think 24mb ram, and a 500 meg
harddrive in it.. ran OS 7.6.1 fine. Would have liked to keep it, but
couldn't afford to repair it at the time. Now I have my PB5300 CE that was
given to me, I love that PowerBook... everything works fine except the track
pad.

I had no problems with the 520c until the screen quit... so hey if you can
find one of the 500's they are good computers.

Re: Newbie, couple questions...

2004-01-24 Thread Michael Druckenmiller Jr.
It has 32 MB of ram. What type of ram does it take, if it is standard 72 pin
simms I can upgrade it to 64.. I don't NEED to run a newer OS, I was just
surious as to what it is capable of. 8.1 will be fine, but I have to get the
SCSI cable so I can use the cd rom drive, and I will still need an 8.1 cd...
I also need to get a track pad, as the button is broke.. Not a big deal
though I am using a mouse for now.

Newbie, couple questions...

2004-01-24 Thread Michael Druckenmiller Jr.

I was just given A Power Book 5300CE with OS 8.0 on it. Everything works
fine. I want to know what is the latest Mac OS that will run on this machine
without too much loss in speed. Just needs a new battery, an HDI-30 to
Centronics 50 cable so I can use the cd rom, and a clean intstall of OS
8.1... or maybe a later OS if possible.

I need an OS 8.1 cd if anyone has one they would like to get rid of for a
reasonable price... or maybe even no price..
