We also have no intention of leaving XP. We have never gotten any
support from M$. We disabled the auto-updates as soon as we install it
after several auto-updates caused problems.
We have successfully used Avast ever since AVG started all the popups.
We are happy with it. We disable various things that interfere with day
to day working - like the popup warning about the same file over and
over even though you already accepted the file.
You have to click around to find all the settings. If you get one
computer setup, then use it to set up the others by going to each menu
one by one. They change the interface with updates so you need to keep
all your computers on the same version. About the updates, they have
cleaned it up a little now so you are not constantly bothered about
paying for whatever.
Regarding McAfee, I saw an interview with him on TV. He said he would
never use it after the present owners messed it up and words to that effect.

Regarding Avast
Do you know if it is possible to get the upgrade popups to go away, and still
have the notifications of updates and alerts still there?
