[RBW] Re: Can you outgrow a frame?
Me thinks ye hath answered thine own query! I know I have shrunk due to weight and age. My flexibility has also declined which has forced me to look at a more rounded exercise program since cycling tends to tighten you up. Improving your flexibility may help. Maybe you'll have to convert the bike to some upright bars. : ( On Dec 29, 9:42 pm, b hamon wrote: > I wonder if any of you have had a custom frame that you rode for years and > more recently have found that the top tube has become too long for you? [RBW] New Simple one
Wondered if the new frame will have a level top tube. Trying to figure my size. I ride a 58cm Long Haul Trucker, and a couple of 23 inch Raleigh's. I'm right in the middle between 58 & 60 cm but have a short reach so I'm thinking a 58 cm might be the best size. I do have a 86.4 cm PBH measurement. I found with my Trucker that I needed a 75mm stem with the noodle bar to get comfortable and my other bikes have had 22.5 top tubes using a 90mm stem. [RBW] Can you outgrow a frame?
I wonder if any of you have had a custom frame that you rode for years and more recently have found that the top tube has become too long for you? I would guess this happens more noticeably to the short-torsoed among us, since as we age our spines compress and those with shorter torsos feel the difference in the reach to the handlebars sooner than everyone else. But I'm beginning to suspect that this may be happening to me with a 12-year-old custom frame that is no longer comfortable with drops on it (even with the shortest Nitto Techie I can find). My suspicion may have been confirmed at the doctor's office this week when I discovered that I was not only no longer 5' 7", I apparently haven't been for some time. For someone who is, in her family of origin, very, very short (my sister and all my cousins topped out at 6' or more), it was a crushing blow, for at least ten minutes. [RBW] Re: Tucson Area Ride Suggestions?
Welcome to Tucson! Been here almost 5 years and love it. What part of town are you in? There are quite a few dirt roads north of town heading to Oracle. You could probably ride out there forever. The road that heads out to the 24 hours in the Old Pueblo course goes over some hills and i think it reaches a spring eventually (never been out that far). There are also some dirt roads south of town headed toward the Santa Ritas-- old vail road is dirt i believe. Also some dirt roads in the middle of town, pretty much between Campbell and Oracle Rd. Along with those are some trials/ roads that link up with the bike path and Fantasy Island. I use google maps to map things out and then see how it goes. Mt Lemmon is a great ride and cars are pretty respectful. There are way too many cyclists up there to not be. Swing by the Safeway on Tanque Verde and Mt. Lemmon Highway some weekend morning and you will be astounded at the number of cyclists It isnt that steep honestly it is just long. Bring plenty of water as there isnt any until Summerhaven and in the summer there isnt any until Palisades. I have never had an issue on that road.I think it is scarier going down at 40+ and sweeping turns. There are also some dirt roads and trails on Mt Lemmon that may be worth checking out. There is also an old dirt road up the back side of Mt Lemmon called the Control Road. It starts in Oracle and ends just before Summerhaven. I have not done it, but hope to soon. Reddington Road also loops around the Catalinas and would make a great long day or overnight. All of the roads are god for riding. Be sure to get over to Saguaro National Park East and ride the 8 mile loop road. Gates Pass on the west side of town is another great ride, though one that you want to be a little more careful about traffic. Hope this helps. Any interest out there? What I really wanted was an Atlantis or Hunqapillar, but I was pinching pennies at the time. - 56 cm Waterford-built (double top-tube) Sam Hillborne, orange - Purchased new in 2010. It has ~ 500 miles, a couple of small nicks in the paint and light wear from normal use of quick release at the dropouts. [RBW] Re: Fenders for Roadeo
Get the fender nuts, and squeeze those fenders up as high as you can, a 45mm fender should fit width wise but your height will be the squeeze as you decide on what tires you are going to run. I went with Planet bike fenders. For the price they are decent, not honjo, but better by far than nothing. I ended up making a longer mud flap for mine too. The stock one on the front was really short. http://oceanaircycles.com/2010/12/16/fenders-on-the-roadeo/ or http://wp.me/p19mfs-9b Have fun, rain is what you make of it. I have never seen a setup that used 1 1/8th fork with a 1" quill stem, using some kind of an adapter. perhaps something could be fab'd up. unless your married to the fork I would use the King devolution, I guess it comes down to which is more important to you, the existing fork or the bullmoose bars. [RBW] How to convert a Bike with 1 1/8" headset to a 1" threadset
Hello RBW List I´m interested to use my Nitto Bullmoose bar/stem on my Touring bike a Thorn XTC that is build with a 1 1/8" headset. Is it possible to: 1. Use the existing fork and convert the steerer with threads and a new 1 1/8" threaded headset. Is it possible to use a spacer to the smaller 1" Quill. 2. Is it better to get a new 1" threaded fork with a King Devolution headset, 1 1/8" to 1". 3. Do you have a better idea/ solution for my problem. What do you recommend, is the first route possible or is it jusst Utopia! I wish you all a Happy new Year! [RBW] Re: Riv Ride Chiang Mai 12-27-10
Gernot: Great photos. 100% Rivendell participation is a high bar to meet; doubt we'll ever get there here in the States. Hope I can hook up with you guys when I'm there next month. Gotta make that adjustment to riding British style. dougP On Dec 29, 6:52 am, Earl Grey wrote: > Up in the far north, almost 20 degrees latitude. :) > > Gernot -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Fenders for Roadeo
You may be aware of this product already but if not think about getting some. They make taking off fenders a lot easier. If zipties hold the fenders securely then why not. Especially if it's only temporary. http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/sheldon-s-fender-nuts/27-008 You realize that if you put fenders on your bike the roads will be dry for your brevet, but if you don't... --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Fenders for Roadeo
Would it be terrible to temporarily attach the front fender to my Roadeo with a bolt as usual at the fork blade tip, and zipties at the brake bridge? These fenders are just for a few days, and since I'm hopelessly bad at readjusting brakes I don't want to have to do it twice in a week. -- -- Anne Paulson My hovercraft is full of eels -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Advice for brevet
This ebay listing (not mine) is for a Sigma LED light specifically intended to light up handlebar instruments: 390268273714. A similar item from Pyramid was on offer from Icycles: 330498720514, but it's now closed. Worth a look, however, and Icycles might have or get some more of them. I haven't tried it, but I think it's worth a look. [RBW] Re: zipties in snow / was: Seattle Snow Commute
I recall wrapping telephone wire (thin single strand copper stuff) around the wheels of my Schwinn Varsity during a school snow day. It helped the traction a bit, but certainly made the rim brakes lock up easily!
