I don't believe that is the case. Knowing how much his tires cost to make
there's no way he's going to retire on that alone.

[RBW] Save Bruce Gordon Cycles

2017-05-22 Thread Evan Baird
Cross Post from BOB

Hey Everybody. I spoke with Bruce Gordon again this afternoon and he still
hasn't found a buyer for his shop. My partner Norma and I decided that we
want to try to raise the money to turn BG Cycles into a frame building
school and bike touring museum and open it to the public. I think what
Bruce is asking is an insanely low amount of one of the most respected
names in custom bicycles and I think that he deserves a comfortable
retirement after everything he's done for the American Bike Industry. If
you can't support us directly please help us spread the word about our
crowdfunding campaign. We have about a month to pull this off, after which
Bruce told me he's just going to take his bicycle collection to the
recyclers and scrap the lot. I really believe he intends to do that, and I
would break my heart to see such beautiful and historical bikes get
destroyed.

[RBW] Re: Disc Brake Pros and Cons

2017-01-13 Thread Evan Baird
While I agree that drop bar hydraulics feel loads better than mechanicals
in terms of modulation, I'm curious whether Jan knows of any mechanical
brakes that pass muster. My experience has been that using compressionless
housing makes a huge difference in terms of power, but I haven't ridden the
Paul Klampers or the TRP Spyres long enough to form any opinion. I ask
because I'm planning to try an Ultra Romance style non aero disc brake
combo on my Ravn build, and you better believe I'm going to ride that thing
on singletrack.

[RBW] Re: My Cantis cant get no respect.

2017-01-13 Thread Evan Baird
So now that the church has cannonized disc brakes the question becomes how
many people are actually riding curvy disc forks? It seemed like Elephant
had it in the bag, but now they're redesigned their forks so I have to
assume there were issues. Soma is doing the Champs with disc brakes, but I
haven't had an opportunity to try the protoype so I can't say exactly how
much flex it's going to have. The Rawlands were redesigned with straight
blades when the decision was made to switch to disc brakes, but it seems to
me that curvy blades on a plus tire would be pretty much pointless.

[RBW] Re: SOMA xpress tires

2016-10-17 Thread Evan Baird
I've never ridden the 650b version since my Stag fits bigger tires, but I know
a few folks who run them on conversions. The only difference between the Pana
brand and the Somas is the hypertex casing (which is supposed to be more
compliant than PT, although a I can't really feel any difference). I don't know
whether they'll keep producing them now that Pana is making their own 650b
pasellas, but the 700c version may be rereleased with a new tread pattern.

I don't really know if that's true anymore. The cost of labor in China

actually quite a bit more because there is more competition for skilled

Re: [RBW] Re: Soma San Marcos questions....

2016-06-22 Thread Evan Baird
Isn't Rivendell technically the Bikes Direct Grant Designs? I know they have
more dealers now, but it's been mail order since day 1. Don't get me wrong, the
San Marcos rides great imo, but the Bleriot was like 95% perfect and I for one
was really disappointed that they didn't just re-relase it and just add more
fork eyelets. My assumption is that it was intened to fill several gaps in the
Riv line without cannibalizing any of their other models, but what Riv customer
is going to want to be stuck running 33mm tires with barely any fender
clearance. For that matter, why would you use "lightweight" tubing just to slap
on a second top tube? If it's just for looks then fine, but using heavier
tubing and just having the one makes a lot more sense.

[RBW] Re: Thoughts on the whole low trail thing?

2016-06-14 Thread Evan Baird
I've been riding back to back rake comparisons for the last 2 years, and
the conclusion I've come to is you'll probably get used to whatever you
ride the most. IF you always carry stuff on your bike, and IF you prefer to
keep it within reach, and IF you need to take your hands off the bars often
then go for it. That said, I ride my Stag without a handlebar bag and it's
fine. I ride the high trail bike with a handlebar bag and pannier and it's
fine. I can ride them both no hands. It is a bit easier with the low trail,
but there are so many variables that you'd need a ven diagram to quantify
it all. The one thing that I feel pretty confident about is that I prefer
the slacker head tube for dirt, regardless of the trail. I can't justify
that with any data though.

[RBW] Re: Getting the message out.

2016-06-06 Thread Evan Baird
Since we're talking about regional issues, I can give an example from the
bay area of how this stuff plays out. SF, as must people are aware, is no
longer affordable by any definition, so the majority of working class folks
live across the bay. The Golden Gate Bridge has a bike lane, so plenty of
people commute to work by bike in the morning. The Bay Bridge does not have
a bike lane, and probably won't get one for at least 10 years. That means
if you work in SF you either take bart (which is nearly impossible with a
bike unless you live out in the burbs) or ride a bus (which means crossing
your fingers and hoping there's space on the front rack) or ride a ferry
which costs twice as much. There is a special bike shuttle, but the point
is there are way more barriers to entry if you live in the historically low
income areas. The only reason this has improved at all is because we have
kick ass advocacy groups that fight for bicycle access, and the only reason
they are able to do that is because they raise a lot of money.

Now I don't mean to point any fingers, but when you compare the
infrastructure development in the wealthy parts of SF to the poorer
neighborhoods in the southeast SF, you can see who is getting the majority
of the infrastructure improvements. But if you never go to those areas,
because you live in a nice part of town so why would you, you'll never
realize that there are a lot of people who are at risk riding there. Those
neighborhoods have been neglected due to a lack of anybody with clout
speaking up about it, and that prevents people that live there from taking
up bicycle commuting. The office jockey who only rides his road bike on the
weekends is not going to throw a fit about unsafe rush hour traffic on
Monday morning, but statistically he is the person that the policy makers
will here from as he's more likely to write a big check. When people talk
about the bike lanes of gentrification this is exactly what they mean.

This is exaclty what I'm talking about. I've always pushed Soma to keep their
web pricing comparable to brick and mortar, but as more and more people sign up
for Amazon Prime it's really a race to the bottom. Any publiclly held bike
company that doesnt offer direct sales is going to get an earful when Canyon
starts moving big numbers. And even if brand try to enforce MAP that doesnt
prevent startups like Casper and Harrys from spinning up buissnesses to compete
with in product catagory they think they have an edge in.

2016-06-02 Thread Evan Baird
Peter, that's already happening. The problem is that the traditional LBS model
is failing, and moat comminities don't have access to coop workspaces. As a
"veteran" shop rat, I have a dewp affection for the LBS and the culture
surrounding it, but I've also seen first hand how the chevanism, zenophobia and
elitism that people encounter in many shops can turn them away from the
"sport". Those of us who are deciples of Sheldon will get along regardless, but
the average dealer isn't going to be able to compete with ecommerce. If the
industry insists of pushing products that are increasingly not user servicable
we're going to see a lot more Circut Cities and Comp USAs in the bike world.
Shops need to be welcoming community spaces. There'sno room for mediocre
service in this economy.

[RBW] Re: Getting the message out.

2016-06-01 Thread Evan Baird
Regardless of whether Bobbishness is a movement already, it needs to become
one if we want to grow the cycling community. The bicycle advocacy world is
primarily funded by lycra wearing, charity rider types (primarily white
dudes if we're going by the numbers). This is a huge problem, especially
since the vast majority of potential transportation cyclists are low income
people of color, many of which primarily speak languages other than English
and don't participate in the "bike community'. That means that the policies
that affect transportation cyclists are frequently being decided by people
who don't really understand the needs of road users that don't fit their
idea of "cyclists". I'm not suggesting a bike industry conspiracy, but
rather a confirmation bias that makes bicycles less accessible. Part of
making cycling accessible is embracing riders who don't fall into the
typical bike shop genres, and very probably won't ever step foot into one
due to the condescending, profit driven mentality of the bike industry. As
long as bike shops are the primary point of contact for new cyclists, we
need to forcefully shift the narrative towards a culture that embraces
cargo bikes, and ebikes and adaptive bikes and upright bikes. It's not
academic. If we want safe roads, and bicycle facilities there needs to be
real money to back up our demands. The auto and oil industries spend
upwards of 50 million dollars a year to push pro driving policies.

Obviously removing material reduces the stiffness of the tires contact area,
and allows it to deform around uneven surfaces. What I don't buy is the notion
that there is a benefit to directional specific tread patterns. A Pasella is
the same as a Jack Brown is the same as a (brand x) Panaracer made Clement
knockoff ect. And that's great, because those tires are all great compared to
Schwalbe Marathons and Vittoria Randonneurs.

Depending on what size you need the SM is really 2 different bikes. The 650b
(47-57cm) is more of a nimble sport touring bike, while the 700c version is
quite a bit beefier and made to take more weight. Basically a Sam with shorter
reach brakes.

Maybe I just don't get how capitalism works, but the way I understand it is if
you make a commodity and supply is outpaced by demand then other suppliers
enter the market and stimulate competition. You can either increase production
and compete on volume or raise your prices and hope that your brand is
stronger. Novel ideas are awatded patents. You can't whinge that somebody
copied your idea that was a copy of sombody else's in the first place. If
competition isn't youre thing get a patent or consider setting up shop in North
Korea. I hear there's a brisk market for custom touring bikes there.
