Re: [RBW] Re: 55 cm Platypus on Amtrak

2024-06-12 Thread Timothy Hurley
On the Amtrak trains in the DC/NYC/Boston corridor you have to take the
front wheel off and hang the bike on a hook. I'm not sure if it's the same
everywhere, but fenders might be more of a problem than a long bike. I can
second that the conductors don't care about the dimensions of your bike
unless it's something crazy.

Yes, yes, I know this is what my little purple pocket Platy is for, but

[RBW] Re: Upgrade to Sam Hillborne from a Surly Corss-Check?

2020-08-12 Thread Timothy Hurley
I’ve had a Sam Hillborne for 11 years and have ridden a Cross Check a bunch of
times. I agree they are functionally very similar, but the way they feel is
night and day. There’s nothing bad about the way the Cross Check feels, but the
S.H. is the most comfortable yet quick bike I’ve ever ridden. It’s like a fast
moving easy chair. All this being said, Cross Check is a great bike too.

[RBW] Quick introduction and Clem parts questions

In my experience almost all lower end (cheaper) Shimano parts work really well.
That Altus derailer is great, the standard MTB levers are great, there are
cheap thumb shifters that work great, the cheaper v brakes are great. Splurge
on nice tires and a nice saddle. Go budget with everything else. This is,
obviously, just my opinion.

[RBW] choco norms

2018-07-04 Thread Timothy Hurley
I’m a tourer/camper and have chocomoose bars on a SH and an old Trek 950. I
love them. I get three good grips fur sure, but the normal grip is very comfy
so I rarely switch it up. They are my favorite bars so far. Mildly agressive
but super comfortable. The bullmoose version feels (obviously) really solid;
great for any trails or rough stuff. I can’t say how they compare to drops
though, it’s been years since I rode drops.

[RBW] Re: Sam Frame Spacing

2016-12-19 Thread Timothy Hurley
Bill, thank you for taking the time to give such detailed advice. What you said
makes sense. I measured everything, flipped the wheel and measured again.
Everything was the same both times. So I've established the wheel (it's true)
is dished corrrctly and thus not the problem.

The wheel was correctly seated in the dropouts both times. Everything was
centered at the seat stays both times. And both times the wheel was almost
touching the right chain stay yet had plenty of room on the left side.

The only thing I can figure is that there's an issue with the frame. Everything
looks straight and I've never crashed it anyhow. This bike has searved me very
well over the years and rides great so it's really only a problem if I wanted
to put 40mm or up tires on it. I was happy with 35's until I discovered this
group last year! Haha

Thank you again for helping me obsess about my bike.

[RBW] Sam Frame Spacing

2016-12-19 Thread Timothy Hurley
Hi all,
I have a 1st year Sam (canti brakes, green paint) and I recently noticed
that the rear wheel isn't centered between the chain stays (down by the
kickstand plate). The tire (38mm Marathon) is almost touching the right chain
stay. Everything is centered between the seat stays up by the brake bridge. I
can't figure out why this is. Could the wheel be dished in a weird way? Have I
bent my frame over years of overbiking? Any suggestions or ideas would be
appreciated. Thank you!
