[RBW] Re: New shoes (and rims) for the Sam Hillborne

2018-06-18 Thread 'Beaverton Bob' via RBW Owners Bunch
Nice bike/build. I like how flared the handlebars are, and the subtle color
touches on the Paul brakes. As a proud Sam H owner myself, I know how
versatile they can be.

I, too, started with handlebars 2 inches above my saddle. Then, on Rivelo's
2nd Anniversary Ride (2017), a gentleman suggested I RAISE my seatpost 3
inches higher, and then lower it by 1/2 an inch a week to find the sweet
spot. I finally found it at 2.25 inches higher (still about level with my
handlebars), and it has been at that height since. By the way, the
gentleman's initials were GP. I honestly would not have tried a higher
seatpost, but am very glad I did.

Re: [RBW] 58 Appaloosa Build (a tale of two bike frames)

2018-06-18 Thread 'Beaverton Bob' via RBW Owners Bunch
If finances allow, I will also echo having two different COMPLETE bikes.

The challenge is making sure you are NOT building the same bike again. I
know that sounds confusing, but how many of us have two "different" bikes
that both have the same cockpit, same saddle, even the same wheelset.

Making one MORE paved road and one MORE unpaved road would be a starting
point. And the different frame size will be ideal for that.

Hi James,

So, I rode my Sam H to work today (a VERY short ride) and used the drops
the whole time.

Then I read your post, and checked my actual saddle to drop height. Turns
out, my Noodle drops ARE below my saddle height but the tops are ABOVE
saddle height. Oops!

Like you, I have two different but very useful positions. To think my

LONG VERSION: I also have a Sam Hillborne, 55cm size, 700c wheels. Just
bought it in 2016 from Rivelo here in Portland. I got one of the Complete
Drop-Bar bikes. If it matters, they are now $100 less than when I bought
mine, and I thought the original price was a good deal!

I am a long-time roadie, and used to do triathlons semi-competitively. I
still have an older Cannondale, 54cm, essentially a typical race-oriented
road bike. I was looking for a do-it-all bike, one to basically ride and
keep for life. I wanted one to commute, ride a century on, and go on
gravel or occasional singletrack. Before I decided on the Sam, I
considered other options. I looked at titanium bikes, then seriously at a
carbon(!) framed gravel bike with disc brakes. However, I was always
intrigued by Rivendells (since 2008 or so), and knew I had to at least try
one. Finally, I test-rode a Sam Hillborne. It was a revelation. The
Hillborne I tried had Albatross bars, but it felt fun - like bike riding as
a kid!

I first wanted an A Homer Hilsen, but the more all-around nature of the
Hillborne won me over. The price was more affordable as well. I went with
the Complete Drop-Bar bike. It had what I thought were pretty wide
handlebars, 46cm bars for the 55cm frame size. In comparison, my Cannonade
has 40cm bars, and I thought those fit me well. I got used to the wider
bars quickly. I also got Grip King pedals, my first platform pedals since
childhood. They were also a pleasant surprise. I now recommend platform
pedals to all my cycling friends. No more looking for shoes, just hop on
the bike and ride in whatever shoes you are wearing.

At this time, all my rides have been less than 1.5 hours. I have the bike
set-up in pretty much typical Rivendell fashion. I have fenders, a stand,
a rear rack, bell, lights, etc. I really only feel the extra weight when
riding uphill. The bike feels very stable, and a lot of fun to ride. In
comparison to my "road" bike, I particularly like the wider tires and the
full fenders. I still have mixed thoughts on the non-indexed bar-end
shifters (I am so used to brifters and indexed downtube shifters), but I
really like the triple crank.

I am thinking of trying out a mustache handlebar next and looking forward
to some gravel or off-road riding this Spring. FWIW, I have not ridden my
Cannonade since getting my Sam. I still intend to keep both bikes, and I
am currently building up a vintage steel (lugged) rigid 26" MTB.

As long as you know what the Sam Hillborne is, and isn't, I really think
you will enjoy it. Whatever Rivendell you decide to get, you will find
yourself riding more than ever. I am certainly glad I got mine. Hope that
helps.

I'm just happy my sharing the listing has generated a LOT of discussion!
In case you all are wondering, there is at least ONE person who might fit
the bike, can appreciate it, and is close enough to actually go for a test
ride: ME.

I am about 5'9", ride a 55 Hillborne daily, and also have a "vintage" 54cm
Cannondale R400.

But, of course, the price is too high for me. My excuse is that I already
have those two other bikes, and prefer to be able to use 38mm tires.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne vs A. Homer Hilsen

2017-08-14 Thread 'Beaverton Bob' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Paul,

I was in your situation last October. I wanted an AHH, but knew about the
Sam. What solved the dilemma for me was going to Rivelo in Portland, and
trying out the Sam. One ride, and I was sold. It is as good as everyone
here says it is. To be fair, I never tried an AHH, but now I do not want
to.

Some caveats:
1. I AM in the middle of the PBH range, for the 55cm sam, it is 82-87cm.
 My PBH is 85-86cm.
2. I have a "road" bike that I still rarely use, an older Cannondale R400.
Would I have just ONE bike? Maybe not, but if I had to keep just one, it
would be the Sam.

My Sam is set-up as a do-it-all, with racks and fenders, a front basket,
and it IS used as a daily (short distance) commuter. However, when it is
time to ride for fun on the weekends, it is still what I choose. No
worries about potholes, short gravel sections, and water puddles (because
sometimes it rains in Portland).

As for how to set it up, I will echo the sentiments here: the stock Riv
setup is solid. I changed some parts, but the drivetrain is stock. Even
the 46(!) cm bars are still there. I have a narrow chest and my road bike
has 40cm bars. I have decided to keep the 46cm bars though, since they DO
make sprinting out of the saddle much better. The stock Kwick Tendril
tires are also quite good.

No regrets at all with this purchase. And in case you are wondering, it
can go as fast as I can. The weight is only noticeable going uphill, but
worth it for the amazing ride quality.

I tried to post a picture using my phone, but couldn't. PM me your cell
number and I can definitely send you a picture.

Thanks for the suggestion, John, definitely looking at the Sutton. I wish

And, in my opinion, the premium cost of MIPS is well worth the added
rotational protection the system is designed to provide.

[RBW] Are you an "Oscar," or a "Felix" bike rider?

2017-10-01 Thread 'Beaverton Bob' via RBW Owners Bunch
I am definitely a Felix. Showed off my daily commuter (a Hillborne) at work,
and the cyclist who saw it couldn't believe how clean it was.

I now have 5 bikes that are always ready to ride, kept relatively clean and
reasonably maintained. However, I am also a fan of beusage and my bikes have
battle scars and honest wear. I do my bike maintenance at home, except for
frame work and headset installation.

SHORT STORY: I remember I once saw our village handyman/gardener in the
Philippines meticulously cleaning his bike. I told my Dad about it and he told
me that if I couldn't afford another bike, I would clean mine just as well.
Ouch!

I am the same with my cars (just maintaining, NOT washing), and I almost all
oil changes and tire rotations myself. Used to have a '74 Karmann Ghia that my
Dad and I used to work on too. Also wax and shine my leather shoes...

Philip,

You are a good man. I have always told my wife I need to be ready to buy a
bike if I saw it being sold and figured it was stolen. Am happy you acted
quickly.

May I suggest asking the potential true owner for certain details about the
bike, such as scratches and dents, or details on tires, gearing, etc. It
shouldn't be too hard to prove someone owns a bike, if they use it fairly
regularly. You can also ask them about "feature" that the bike does NOT
truly have, and they should know it doesn't exist.

Good luck finding the owner!
