I used to use Mozilla all the time, until Opera 7.11
was released. Mozilla still looked better (IMO) but
Opera simply offered more functionality. The new
version 7.21 was a dead easy upgrade of an RPM keeping
all my original settings, nothing to reconfigure. I've
also found it more stable. It's really a good product.

Goto CPAN with:

# perl -MCPAN -e shell

cpan> force install Net::SSLeay

and it will override the error.

Personally I wouldn't mind listening to comparisons
between Red Hat and Debian and don't think it's that
off-topic since this is a general discussion red hat
list.

I remember when the FUD about Red Hat occured that
time, and remember that it was mentioned that
Motorola, owning a sizeable share of Red Hat, won
itself a seat on Red Hat's board. And who owns
Motorola? you guessed it, Microsoft...

I had a similar problem the other month and asked in
the list on how to get grub installed in a partition
(you should be able to search the list and find those
answers).

I think this is what you'll need to do, since from the
looks of things grub (or lilo) can't find the master
boot record, so you have to install it and specify it.

Periodic deletion of old subdirectories

Hi,

Just a general scripting question.

I have a need to delete subdirectories in a particular
directory tree if the directories in the tree are
older than a certain time (say one month). I'd like to
cron this script to work in the background and clean
that diretory tree up.

What the best way/technique to do this?

You think in the long run Fedora will actually get off
the ground like Red Hat Linux did? 

I'm very sceptic about Red Hat's move and although can
understand why Red Hat would do such a thing, don't
agree with it as it directly affects me and my use of
Linux.

Maybe for the long term it'll be time to move to Suse?

imap/pop location of inbox mail

Hi,

I've recently setup a system to be delivering it's
inbound mail from something other than the default
/var/spool/mail directory.

Now I need to tell POP and IMAP to look at this new
directory instead of /var/spool/mail.

How do I do this?

I use imap-2001a-15 from Red Hat 8.0, and in reading
those docs it seems I need to get the source RPM and
re-compile it with modifications to some source files?

I'm hoping there's an easier way, maybe using another
POP/IMAP server? (I've looked at Courier-IMAP but it
only does Maildir which I can't use, I need mbox
format support).

Any help is appreciated.

You'd want to look at mgetty+sendfax. For an easy way
to get it all setup, you can ue Webmin to do the
configuration.

Mgetty is very well documented so you shouldn't have
any issues getting it running.

I run all of those services in production with Apache
2.0 from Red Hat 8, have been for many months. I can't
comment on Red Hat 9 in production, since I've only
used it as a workstation, but Red Hat 8 I'm happy with
so didn't see any reason to upgrade.

I've tried putting this into /etc/procmailrc and also
/home/$username/.procmailrc all to no available, mail
still gets delivered to /var/spool/mail.

In checking my sendmail setup, I have the
"local_procmail" feature enabled in sendmail.mc and it
shows up correctly in sendmail.cf, but still when I
send mail it gets delivered to /var/spool/mail.

I have no idea why.

Sendmail/procmail mail delivery location

Hi,

I'm using sendmail on RH8. What I'd like to do is
modify the standard delivery of mail from:

/var/spool/mail/$USERNAME

to the

/home/mail


directory. I want to do this as it will help in quota
setup.

I've thought of the easiest approach by just moving
/var/spool/mail to /home/mail and creating a softlink
from /var/spool to /home/mail but I'd rather do this
via the sendmail program. Looking at the sendmail FAQ
it said it uses procmail to do the delivery. Looking
at the procmail FAQ's things start to get hard to
understand. Trying to join any of the procmail mailing
lists fail.

Any help and advice is appreciated.

I've tried the various things which people suggested
earlier today and unfortunately nothing worked because
the system is a Dual processor system. This is what
the bootup sequence says:

apm: BIOS version 1.2 Flags 0x07 (Driver version 1.16)
apm: disabled - APM is not SMP safe.

without this, the server will just not powerdown
regardless what I do.

However, when booting in UniProcessor mode, the kernel
loads APMd without issues AND powers off without
issues.

I stopped APMd and tested it in UP, and it still
powers off.

This is keeping identical BIOS settings with the only
difference being between booting from UP mode or SMP
mode. UP works, SMP don't.

This occurs on 3 SMP server I have, all running RH8
and 2 UP desktops running RH8.

So from all this, it doesn't look like I can get this
working as long as SMP mode is enabled.

I tried the poweroff to no avail. I'll be trying the
APM stuff from the BIOS tonight, and see if that makes
a difference to the server.

I believe APM support is already made available with
the stock redhat kernels, which I haven't modified.

An interesting thing Stephen raised earlier was
whether I was running apmd, which I wasn't. I've done
further analysis on this and the boxes that do
poweroff on shutdown have it running.

I will enable the service tonight (I'll be onsite
then) and test it all, fingers crossed it works.

I might start to consider an upgrade to 9 if this
poses to be a real major problem. It's hard to do when
you have about 5 servers all running the same OS,
easier to manage.

I've discussed this with the Openwebmail forums and
everyone so far running the latest perl RPM's and
Openwebmail 2.10 and above experiences these issues.
I'm still going through this with people suggesting
things in there, but basically the above error I
identified is more of perl bombing out from some of
the perl scripts in OWM.

If anyone wants to follow this discussion, they are
welcome to checkout the OWM forum on sourceforge.

On your suggestions I went through the BIOS, disabled
the PNP OS option (it was enabled), and verified the
ACPI facilities were enabled.

For ACPI the motherboard (an MSI motherbaord) supports
S1 and S3 type suspends, I'll have to check the manual
today and see what the difference between the two are.

For APM, I have it on user define, and I think I
disabled APM for devices as I don't like the powering
down of any items within a server to be done. Should I
fine-tune this somehow?

Hmm.. neither has the apmd running, although they both
have the rpm installed. Should I enable the apmd
service, I thought it was only for laptops?

Power-off on shutdown -h

Hi,

I have two new servers (different types) and each
server supports the ability to power itself off on a
shutdown - I've installed windows and linux partitions
on each, though they are linux servers.

down" prompt after shutting down the drives, but they
do not power-off.

I have many other servers and desktop PC's which do
power-off on a shutdown but have been stumped to
figure out why these two don't under linux but do
under windows.

Anyone have any suggestions, know where this is
controlled? and why?

I'm using RH8 with latest RPM'ed kernels.

I run Openwebmail 2.10 and after installing these perl
updates they broke Openwebmail. Openwebmail comes back
with things like:

Internal server error

for tasks such as sending email and changing
prferences.

After reverting back to the older perl RPM's, the
problem went away.

I'm intending to report this to the Openwebmail list
today to see if a remedy can be found.

It's optional, by default SpamAssassin is _not_ turned
on in MailScanner's config, you have to specifically
modify it to use it.

BIND RPM update?

SPAMed on my root account

Hi,

I get SPAM messages on my root account. I use
sendmail. 

Basically I don't want anyone in the outside world
emailing me on my root account, so I was wondering
what I could do with sendmail to tell it to not accept
anything from anyone outside of my own internal
networks?

Speaking to HPT they told me they do provide the v1.31
driver opensource, which can be used to compile
against the kernel.

I'm building this system as a production server, it's
maybe a week away, so I also don't really have the
chance to fiddle with this too much.

Maybe one day it'll all be added into the kernel, make
life easier for many of us.

I went this route and am quite happy with the results.
There's a little bit of overhead to the CPU's but its
no big deal for the end result.

HPT got back to me on a support call I logged with
them. They said they do have an opensource HPT driver
for the 1200A card, v1.31 available at the bottom of
the download page where you download the binary
drivers.

They said there shouldn't be any issues with compiling
this driver into whatever kernel I install.

Strange why this opensource driver still isn't added
into the Linux kernel.

Yes, Windows is installed on /dev/sda while /dev/sdb
and /dev/sdc are raid 1 soft mirrors. But that is the
key term, they are soft mirrors. The grub-install
script will _not_ work with installing the MBR on a
soft mirrored linux install.

The error returned when trying to do the above is
something of the form:

/dev/md0 cannot allocate drive from BIOS

(from memory). After much more Googling with the above
error, I came up with the answer.

on bugzilla.redhat.com this is a known bug with
grub-install dating back to Red Hat 7.2 when it was
first logged with Red Hat in 2001. The bug has existed
since then from 7.3 to 8.0 and still exists in 9.
Reading through that bug report many asked why Red Hat
haven't fixed it for more than 2 years, the answer
was, Red Hat consider it a 7.2 bug and not anything
more.

Well, it's still a bug and the solution is given in
there. What I had to do was go into the grub shell,
type:

grub> root (hd1,0)
grub> setup (hd0)

And it wrote the MBR to the Win2000 partition (disk).
I could not do "root (hd0,0)" as grub came back saying
it couldn't mount the NTFS patition.

I write this detail here in the hope that anyone else
experiencing this problem can search the Red Hat
archives and read on how to fix it. It was a
frustrating bug to deal with, and really, Red Hat
should have fixed it by now.

Why don't these companies release sources to their
drivers to be included in the kernel?

I don't see this "binary driver" implementation very
flexible and self-sustaining, puts more work on the
supplier side to get this working for each
distribution and each kernel release, on top of the
inflexibility it can provide to the customer.

GRUB install on hard drive

I built a box last night with the following config:

4x 9gb UW2 scsi drives off an adaptec controller

First drive (/dev/sda) or hd(0,0) in grub.conf, I
installed Windows 2000 professional. I made this a
primary partition.

Second and third drives (/dev/sdb and /dev/sdc) or
hd(1,0) under grub.conf I created a Linux software
raid 1 mirror and installed Red Hat Linux 8.0. Also
made this a primary partition.

I seemingly mistakenly installed grub on /dev/sdb.

When booting the machine, Windows 2000 automatically
boots, when what I really want is for grub's menu to
kick in and allow me to choose it, defaulting to
Linux.

I realise now I should have chosen /dev/sda to install
grub on the redhat linux install (if it would allow
me) but am now trying to get grub installed on
/dev/sda, and realise I don't know how to do this
without re-installing linux.

Anyone know how to do this?

Googling I came up with grubconfig, which is a script
that installs grub into an MBR, but this does not seem
to work for software raid under /dev/md0 (which really
resides under /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc).

At the moment I'm booting the system from the boot
floppy, which only seems to start one cpu (it's a dual

Do you mean the driver for the 2400A is now in the
main line kernel or the driver for the 1200A?

Yeah.. I was able to have both drives detected under
Linux as JBODs, but I installed the Linux system using
the driver disk for the AMD cpu's and a redhat 8
re-install. Worked fine.

HPT also have Raid Management software which I also
downloaded and installed. This also worked fine and
was an exact copy of the raid management software
available for windows allowing you to see the raid
sets, duplicate them and so on. Quite nice.

Didn't mean to, just tried to understand their
decision behind it since I was able to get both the
driver and the Raid management software from HPT and
get it to work, while Adaptec made no mention of HPT
when asking their support, they just said it's not
supported.

Adaptec ATA RAID 1200A under Linux

Hi,

I've just purchased a new AMD Ahtlon system, and got
with it an Adaptec ATA RAID 1200A as it seemed to do
what I wanted.

Unfortunately, this card is not "officially" supported
by Adaptec, after emailing their support they only
tell me "unfortunately it's not supported under
Linux", yet they have all the Windows drivers. They
told me the 2400A card (which is many times more
expensive and has more features than what I need), is
supported under Linux and they provide the drivers for
it.

Having googled for information on this card and Linux,
I've discovered that the card can be used using the
HPT370 (HighPoint Technology) driver, since Adaptec
use that chipset on their card. I obtained the driver
from:

for Red Hat 8.0 and it works fine.

I'm wondering why Adaptec don't "officially" supply
this driver themselves??? and don't provide support
for the card under Linux since it works perfectly
well. All I need is mirroring facility on the IDE
drives, so that's all I wanted in the card. The more
expensive 2400A (which Adaptec officially support
under Linux) has all the bells and whistles, has a
processor on board and supports RAID 5, but I don't
need those features so don't need that card.

If it wasn't for the HPT driver, I would have got rid
of the Adaptec and looked at something else, maybe a
Fastrack 100 or similar, whatever is supported under
Linux. I don't see the reasoning behind Adaptecs
decision not to support the 1200A under Linux.

Anyway, if anyone has experience with this card I do
have one query. I'd like to upgrade my kernel from
2.4.18-14smp which I have on the fresh RH8 install
(installing the HPT driver upon installation via the
driver disk), to the newest 2.4.20-20.8smp, but HPT
have only got a module for 2.4.20-8smp on their driver
disk.

Can I use this module on the newer 2.4.20-20.8smp by
just copying the module into the kernel tree for
2.4.20-20.8smp ?

If not, how else can I upgrade the kernel to
2.4.20-20.8smp while still using the HPT module /
driver. Note that I have my RAID 1 mirror as the boot
drive for Linux.

Re: Linux on DEC Alpha?

The Intel versions downloadable from Red Hat's ftp
site will not work, obviously because it's an Alpha
processor box.

The last time I checked (via google) there was a site
providing ISO images for Red Hat Linux for Alpha,
Sparc, etc and the different versions, but from memory
the Red Hat version they had on-line was v6.0

I've previously done a Linux install on an Alpha, and
I am happy to say it works very well although I
re-installed Tru64 Unix as Linux on the Intel
platforms was cheaper and faster.

One of the major differences between a Linux install
on an Intel and Alpha is that with the Alpha you need
a special "boot" partition (FAT partition) to boot the
environment. The rest is pretty much the same.
Googling will get you a host of resources and sites to
look all this information up on.

Re: dd to clone hard drive

Interesting.. I'm thinking of upgrading the primary
disk on my server from a 6Gb disk - linux installation
- to a 9Gb disk - linux installation.

Could I plug in the second disk, dd all the stuff from
the 6gig disk to the 9 gig disk, pull out the 6gig
disk, replace it with the 9gig disk and away I go?

I use RH8 with grub.

redhat-config-bind v2.0.0-8

Hi,

I downloaded the latest redhat-config-bind v2.0.0-8
from rawhide, and get the following error when trying
to run it after installing it:

I run this on a Red hat 8.0 machine - I realise there
may be issues there, but I was able to install and run
redhat-config-bind v1.9.0-13 which was released for
Red Hat 9.

Any ideas as to why this is failing would be
appreciated.

Unbelievable Sean.. absolutely nothing. When I first
tested this stuff I produced inbound and outbound
traffic, plenty of it, and the pppstats program would
not shot the traffic.. things like 1k/sec both ways
for example.

Trying this now, flogging the link both ways, and the
traffic is shown?? Go figure...

My questions now is, is there something out there that
can script any of this so I can total up my bandwidth
usage per day, week, month, etc?

I haven't fiddled with Linux IP accounting stuff for
maybe 7 years, so any new info (or software available
which will do it for me) would be appreciated.

linux machine. It brings up PPP0, but when trying to
monitor this with "pppstats -c99 ppp0" it doesn't
produce the correct bandwidth usage.

So I'm wondering, how do I total my usage of the IP
traffic I use via this PPPoE connection?

Exactly, you can also check what runlevels the daemon
is turned on and off for using:

chkconfig --level d

A reading of the chkconfig man page really would have
told you all this straight away.

Greed is a wonderful thing... but I ask you... which
do you think is greedier.. SCO or Microsoft?

I think it's nice to know that SCO employees don't
agree with what's going on, afterall they are human
with finite pockets, personal lives and families to
feed. But the same can be said, both historically and
present day, that many of the Microsoft employees feel
the same way about Microsoft. It didn't stop Microsoft
from it's illegal and anti-competitive behaviour go on
for almost it's entire life, which still to this day,
affects the industry, negatively I might add.

More ADSL links - bonding? load balancing? or?

Hi,

I've been using ADSL for a while but would like to
investigate for more bandwidth for the future, using
multiple ADSL links.

I've heard of bonding and load balancing, and even
advanced routing techniques for this but before I
investigate I was hoping if anyone here has any
recommendations.

I'm using linux boxes to do all of this.

Any advice is appreciated.

site (or email address of a sender) into a whitelist.

Hi Billy,

Just for some advice, never try to test things on a
production environment, it's really asking for
trouble. Do yourself a favour and build a PC with the
same config as your production, and with whatever
people reply to you for packages, pop them onto there,
install and play with the environment, before having
it put onto production.

You'll thank yourself later for doing it that way than
installing various RPMs people tell you about onto
production only to find some things break.

I have the following in my modules.conf:

alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate

But I still get that error upon each dialup. But from
what I remember since Red Hat doesn't have bsd_comp.o
in the RH8 and 9 series, you have to compile the
kernel to support it.

My question is, what is the difference between
ppp-deflate and bsd_comp? can/should these be used
separately or both together?

644 resides on the cron file with root owner and root
group.

Not executable as it's 644.

I'd expect it's run as root since I just dropped the
file in there (created it in there and set
permissions), although a "crontab -l -u root" doesn't
show it listed, looking in /var/log/cron it does get
loaded but the commands don't seem to get executed. I
tested this by cron'ing:

* * * * * ls /proc >> /tmp/proc

and by running the above as a script like:

* * * * * /root/listproc.sh

the file wasn't created.

I'm trying to make use of this directory, as it's my
understanding that cron drop files fro applications
are placed in here and they should be the same format
as those that would normally be placed in
/etc/crontab.

However I do this, and verify they are successfully
loaded in /var/log/cron, yet they don't run when.

What am I doing wrong?

I can't be 100% about this since I have never done it.
Bu there is software called stunnel which will allow
you to tunnel anything you can run under xinetd
through it (thereby encrypting it via SSL). Do a
google search for stunnel and you'll find plenty on
it.

There is also software which gives you a secure and
encrypted FTP server, I saw in on freshmeat or
sourceforge the other day, do a keyword search for ftp
in those and you should be able to find it quickly
enough.

Firstly, there's no explanable reason why you
shouldn't be able to download the ISO's when so many
(hundreds?) of thousands successfully have, and
especially when it comes to ftp sites, so many of them
have the ability to continue broken connections that
the ftp client you use should be able to support that
feature and successfully download the ISO.

Trying from the couple of ftp sites you mention and
stopping at the same spot indicates you have some
other issue other than the actual ftp sites you're
ftping from.

I've successfully installed from ISO's many a time.

In answer to your question below on what to do next, I
start by forcing an rpm install of the X environment
again.

I've also been using it for ages and especially on
some of the more mundane admin tasks, it makes things
straight forward and doesn't require much setup to get
going.

Highly recommended for any newby to Linux, but even
the veteran will find a use for it (I've used it on
various UNIX flavours helping retain a similar admin
interface for all OSes).

I'd opt for the pcmcia interface modem since that will
save you power and cabling issues.

Re: kernel-2.4.20-13.8.i686.rpm error

Yeah.. I did some study on this via google, and found
out that error only comes up when you have lilo
installed.

But remember the lilo.conf file was basically void of
any kernel stuff in there.

So instead of the RPM correctly updating both
grub.conf and lilo.conf, it did update grub.conf
correctly (since I have since applied it to other RH8
machines), but did not do lilo.conf correctly - since
I can only assume it removed the old kernel entries
from lilo.conf but didn't add the new ones.

So I emailed the datacentre support guys, told them to
add the correct lilo lines, which they did, and
brought up the server again. They told me I
"misconfigured the server", but I wasn't about to
argue the point when they charge for their time.

Red Hat should've gotten this right in my opinion, but
now I know the error, I'll recognise it in future
updates and patches.

What I'd do is a run a rescue disk, mount the drive
and run chkrootkit on it (it's a util you can grab
with a google search), that should tell you if you've

I'm not sure about RH9 Yannic, but I know when I
compiled that module for Webmin under RH8, I used the
Webmin "Perl modules" module to do it for me.

Just go to the module, enter it's name into the CPAN
field, it will do a download, test, compile and
install all for you.

When I recently upgraded to the latest Gaim 0.63-1
(from Gaim 0.59-9) it requested various libraries from
gtkspell which needed installation of aspell (or a
library in that version).

To cut a long story short, I was able to find all RH8
RPM's except for one, which I found as a Connectiva
RPM, I installed it (what could it hurt, if it fails
just uninstall it), it worked, so went ahead and
installed the other RPMs.

I've been using Gaim 0.63-1 since, and it's soo much
better than its previous version.

An easy way to use this is to create accounts like:

dm1_bob
dm2_bob

where dm1 would be dm1.com and dm2 would be dm2.com

Let say these two accounts reside on "domain.com", so
in real life they are:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Then configure postfix to have incoming mappings, and
outgoing mappings.

For the incoming, anything to [EMAIL PROTECTED] gets sent to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and anything to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] gets sent to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

You then do the same thing (but in reverse) for
outgoing address sent from each of those dm1_bob and
dm2_bob accounts. So when those users send from
[EMAIL PROTECTED] postfix will change it
to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

For whatever client they are using, all clients have
the ability to tell the MTA what email address they
are coming from f.e. for
[EMAIL PROTECTED], just tell you mail
reader your "From:" address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I use Downloader for X (d4x), doing a google search
you'll find it easy.

I had major problems getting gftp working with my
proxy server.

Only problem is there are no sound modules in there:

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias eth0 eepro100
alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx
alias usb-controller usb-uhci
alias scsi_hostadapter1 aha1542

I've done a google search and many people have this
problem, but I can't find a solution for it.

I remember from years ago you can turn off modules
within modules.conf, something like:

alias sound-service-0-0 off

???

Not sure why it thinks I have a soundcard in this
server, it never had nor will have one, but RH8 seems
to look for one.

RE: Static Routes in Redhat 8.0

I thought this was a bug because I was getting the
same issues.

They talk about the workaround as getting the
following script from RH7.x:

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-routes

I don't have any RH7.x machines, can someone provide
the script here?

BTW, when I use redhat-config-network to configure my
network under RH8, it creates the route.eth0 file.

The only other issue I have with this setup is when I
use redhat-config-network to add an alias, it adds
many default route entries in my routing table for
each alias device ie. if I have 10 alias devices, I
also have 10 default route entries.

Any help here would be appreciated.

When the RHCE was first introduced to Australia, it
came to Sydney and I was in the first class offered,
taught but the first Australian to get RHCE certified
overseas and be able to teach it here.

We did it on RH6.2.

I loved the course and thought it was one of the best
certifications I sat, a little biased since I've loved
Linux for a long time.

I've only ever once received an email from Red Hat
Australia, saying that I can become one of their
consultants if I commit to an expensive membership
with them. From there they said I could possibly get
work directed my way (I was a contracting consultant
at the time) by them. I didn't take it on board as the
cost didn't seem worth it, when I was flatout working
in various other areas anyway and didn't need more
work.

Apart from that, I've really need no more "support" or
any other benefits to the certification.

I didn't do it to get more work, nor to make a career
for myself (as I was a senior UNIX engineer already
anyway), but did it as I was passionate about Linux
for so long and wanted it.

I have no regrets and would do it again in a second if
I had to do it over, but it certainly would have been
nicer with more Red Hat support to their certified
engineers.

I dislike Microsoft with a passion, but I've done the
MCSE and must say MS supported me much more with
technet subscriptions and the like.

Although I agree with Christopher below, you should be
able to do this using Webmin. Just create a Webmin
user with access to the firewall module (there's quite
a few available for Webmin), and I'd imagine you'd
have to also suid the iptables command to allow that
user access to it.

Re: Redhat Linux 9.0 & XFS support

I have to agree there, I find it really strange that
XFS isn't fully native to the Red Hat installation,
it's a really good filesystem and supported on all
major distributions, except for Red Hat.

I used to run Red Hat 7.3 with XFS (using the SGI
ISO's I downloaded from the SGI site). The author of
those ISO's had said the RH 7.3 XFS ISO release was
the last he'll provide, that anyone wanting them for
any Red Hat future releases should ask Red Hat to
implement them by default in their distributions.
After moving to Red Hat 8.0 I was surprised Red Hat
didn't include the support natively.

Definately makes one wonder why there seems to be
reluctance there...

There's alot there that you're asking and I'm sure
alot of documentation is available on the VNC web
site.

Your best bet is to read some of the documentation and
familiarise yourself with the way VNC functions.

I use TightVNC personally as it offers more
functionality than VNC itself, downloadable as RPM
also.

You use VNCviewer from the client (maybe Windows) and
type something of the form:

host.domain.name:0

if you started the VNC server on host.domain.name with
:0 or:

host.domain.name:1 

if you started it as :1

Once you start up your VNC server, it will ask you for
a password which you must then enter from your client.

If the link between your client and the server has a
firewall in between, you'll need to open up your
firewall a bit to allow VNCviewer through.

I used to use qmail many years ago, and really loved
it back then (I know hotmail still uses it for their
outbound mail, they've been using it for years on
FreeBSD).

But recently when I did a full upgrade of my
environment from old Linux releases, I abandoned qmail
and just went for a simpler management solution under
Webmin and Sendmail. Found it very straight to setup
and handle without any dramas at all.

My original reasoning for going to qmail was the
complexity of the sendmail setup, which in those days
was difficult. These days things have changed
somewhat.

mount point is already mounted.

I also administer many Tru64 UNIX and Sun Solaris
machines, and neither shows this type of behaviour. If
something is mounted, you shouldn't be able to mount
on top of it, just imagient he mess you get yourself
in when you try to unmount early mounted filesystems

Multiple identical NFS mounts under RH8

Hi,

I think I've found a bug in RH8's NFS.

I have 3 Red Hat machines, 2 of the RH8 and 1 RH6.2

On one of the RH8 machines, I export a filesystem,
while the other RH8 and RH6.2 machines mount that
exported filesystem.

On the RH8 client, I can mount the filesystem many
times as shown (df -k output):

Has anyone else experienced this issue before?

BTW, I can dismount each and every RH8 mount point one
at a time also. Weird.

links of varying sorts, to proxy squid caching, to
firewalling, to handling of virtual email domains and
system monitoring of various services and servers.

I've found it to be strong and robust, I wouldn't put
it down to oddball at all.

There's a couple of ways you can do this but generally
speaking, if you're only to have one dialup server,
use mgetty, if you're going to need redundancy and
multiple dialup servers, use portslave, radiusclient
and freeradius.

The cd drive is empty actually... I thought it had
something to do with the KDE automounter always
checking the cd drive to see if something is in it?

I think I will try that yes, I haven't done it before
but from memory it's something like

I use Red Hat 8.0. I wish to add the above line to my
routing table using the GUI tools they provide, but
when attempting to do this it just plainly does not
work.

The routing table I'd like is:

2nd CPU in AcerAltos server and RH8 SMP kernel

Hi,

I've recently added a 2nd CPU into my AcerAltos 930
server.

The server is correctly configured for DUAL CPU mode.

I've updated the stepping codes to correctly support
the Pentium II CPU's (both 300MHz).

I've installed the latest kernel-2.4.18-27.8.0 SMP
kernel, but when booting this kernel it hardly gets 1
second into the boot before it reboots itself.

The server boots fine in single CPU mode (using the
single CPU kernel).

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Shutting down RedHat 8 with NFS mounts active

Hi,

I have a Red Hat 8 server exporting NFS filesystems.
When I shutdown the server (to halt or reboot) it
hangs on the part where it has to shutdown NFS
services.

Nothing I do will get it out of this part without a
cold power off (which then means a check of the disks
on boot and recovery from journal).

Of course if I remove the mounts from other servers
mounting those filesystems first, the NFS server shuts
down cleanly for a reboot without a problem.

Sometimes it's very impractible (and sometimes I
forget) to dismount all exported volumes before
shutting down the NFS server.

What can I do to "fix" this?

Hi,

Yes, I tried it out and it is fast.

I moved back to Mozilla 1.3b though, since I liked the
j2re rpm release (which SUN supplied on their website)
and is compatible with Mozilla 1.3b.

I didn't have any issues with running Mozilla 1.3b
either - not to say that I had any with Mozilla 1.3 -
just that when going to the Blackdown project site,
and downloading their j2re 1.4.1-01 compiled under gcc
3.2, it was a bit of a pain to install due to the
"tarball and follow instructions" to install that and
the web version.

I like the RPM version better, it's cleaner and
requires less "leg work" when upgrading.

I emailed both Sun and Blackdown as to whether they'll
release an RPM version for j2re 1.4.1 compiled under
gcc 3.2 under Red Hat 8.x... no reply yet...

The last time I downloaded 1.3b, it came as "xft+gtk2"
as the red hat 8 rpm.

RedHat 8 Bluecurve login screen

Hi,

I recently removed some packages from my Red Hat 8
installation, and when I rebooted I now receive a
login screen which is not the "Red Hat 8 blue
background blue login window" screen, but one which is
beage with a manual clock-face to the right of it.

When going back into the "packages" option I noticed
that the "Gnome Desktop Uninstalled" was uninstalled.
I swear this wasn't of my doing as I deleted packages
underneath Gnome Desktop, but somehow this was
removed.

Anyway, I've re-installed the Gnome Desktop
Environment but still get that login screen instead of
the nice Blue one on my other Linux boxes.

Any ideas as to how to fix this?

Sendmail - Domain masquerading

Hi,

I've just setup and migrated my mail from sendmail V8
to sendmail V10.

I used to successfully use the:

DMmydomain.com.au

to mask my hostname with just the mydomain.com.au for
outgoing emails under V8 without any problems. Under
V10 this option no longer works.

I'm using this under Red Hat 8.0 and use Webmin 1.0.7
to configure my sendmail environment.

Any ideas to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Samsung Contact Server 8.0.1 and Red Hat 8

I sent an email on this a few days ago, but looking at
the redhat list archives couldn't find it in there.
Strange.

I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience
with installing Samsung Contact Server 8.0.1 with Red
Hat 8. Did it all work well, any issues to contend
with? etc.

Samsung Contact Server 8.0.1

Hi,

I've just downloaded and burnt the ISO for this and
was wondering if anyone has had any experience with
installing it yet on a Red Hat 8.0 machine?

I've also burnt the client ISO (8.0.0) and will
attempt to use and install all of this on a test box
(running RH8.0) before considering it for a production
environment.

Any advice is appreciated.
