Delete the file group_mapping.tdb, then restart samba.

Ryan,

I spent a lot of time writing a book that documents how to make Samba-3 do
what users want it to do. The book is called "Samba-3 by Example". It is
available from Amazon.Com and has ISBN 013188221X. Alternatively, you can
download the PDF from:

http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba3-ByExample.pdf

Chapter 5 comprehensively documents Samba-3 plus OpenLDAP. If the information
does not meet your needs please let me know so I can fix it. I dispise
documentation that is inadequate or ineffective, so any help you can give me
to make this book more useful and more helpful is most welcome.

Cheers,
John T.

"Different" is about it.

Do they value being able to tell what's going on with their systems? Do
they value repeatable results? Do they object to setting changing
themselves, sometimes for no reason and somtimes during an update? Do
they mind being obsoleted when Vista or whatever shanges the buttons
they need to click in order to make it work under Win32? If the answers
are no, no, no and no then maybe they have a case. Or not.

Cheers; Leon

Re: [Samba] what's the best filesystem

2005-10-04 Thread Duncan Robertson
We are also looking into this, as we are examining moving some samba
shares from Solaris to Linux

Also some usage patterns may affect things.. jfs seems to work much
better than ext3 for reading directories with LOTS of files in it, a
situation which not uncommon on large samba shares.

jfs file systems can be grown in place (without unmounting) - but cannot
be shrunk.
jfs you can choose the filename encoding on mount, which can effect the
readability of filenames.

ext3 can be grown and shrunk, but you have to unmount them.

these are more general issues, but can apply to managing a busy samba
server over time..

I have had bad experiences with reiser in the past as well, however that
was a very long time ago - though the experiences were bad enough that I
haven't been tempted to try it again.

Hi all,

With regard to message

progress on the implementation?

I work at a Windows shop where they implement a deep mapping with no
permission for users on the \\boxname\users level.
The \\boxname\users\username directory is visible if I get to it via
"smbclient" and then "cd" within smbclient.

Any ideas, suggestions? Thanks a lot for your insights.

[Samba] Group mapping question

2005-10-04 Thread Robert Prange
I used the following command to set users on my samba
server (who are part of the users group) to be able to log
into the domain on win xp clients as Administrators.

net groupmap modify ntgroup="Domain Admins"
unixgroup=users

I can verify this by typing "net groupmap list." The
other windows groups that are listed are all set to "-1"
as I have not set them yet. My question is, how do I undo
the above command?

I was only fooling around with group mapping, and do not
intend to use it. So, I would like to set everything back
to -1. Also, is there a control file somewhere that holds
the group mapping information?

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

i have tried with both debian sarge 3.0.14a packages, and i compiled
my own from the source

version 3.0.20

I have tried -Y on winbindd, i have looked over the smb.conf file, i
tried googling for "write to socket failed"
but nothing really usefull came up :( only that others have had the
same problem previously in time.

Re: [Samba] cross subnet browsing over IPSec

2005-10-04 Thread Doug VanLeuven

Jonathan Salomon wrote:

Hi all!

This is a repost to this list, hoping to draw some extra attention
because I got NO reply whatsoever to the original posting :( I would
really appreciate if someone could comment om which of both strategies
as described below is best.

I am having some trouble with a samba domain distributed over 2 subnets
 (192.168.0.0/23 (supernetted) & 192.168.4.0/24). These subnets are
linked over the internet through a IPSec gateway to gateway (network to
network) connection (i.e. all machines can reach/ping each other on both
subnets). The samba PDC (with LDAP backend) has IP 192.168.0.4 and there
is a BDC (LDAP slave) in the other subnet at IP 192.168.4.2.

The problem is that login of the WinXP clients on the 192.168.4.0/24
subnet is really slow and I suspect this is caused by data getting sent
through the (relatively slow) IPSec connection while this is not
necessary because the BDC should offer all services (like authentication
and profiles/homedirs).

If ipsec is correctly configured, you can treat it as a simple
multihomed router.

It's not a cut and dried one size fits all solution.

Multiple WINS servers only works where they replicate their data
on some schedule. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but there are
no samba configuration options for replication between samba servers.
There have been posts about using rsync on browse.dat but I never
went that road.
My own experience with an MS NT40 domain was if the PDC was
unreachable, not much worked well even though a BDC was available.
If the WAN was down for a sufficient amount of time, promote the
BDC to a PDC. This only worked well where each BDC had it's own
WINS server and replicated the data. Reconnecting the WAN meant
demoting the temporary PDC back to BDC status. Never did that
with samba, but with MS servers. Pretty complicated what with
RID master data and everything.

One WINS server that every machine points to is the easiest to
maintain, but puts the domain at the mercy of the WAN.

With the BDC backend LDAP a slave, you've got multiple sync issues
and probably your best best is the one WINS server, every other
machine pointed to it. Then work on the speed and WAN reliability
as seperate functions.

Profiles and home dirs are set per user using User Manager for Domains.
Providing users stay on a respective side of the WAN, one can eliminate
dragging data across the WAN by setting the user to use only
shares on the samba server on their respective side.

Get users used to the concept of dragging file contents across the
WAN before editing and then drag them back when they're done, where
possible.

I like xfs, specially with quota. (and using acl's here as well)

with xfs you never have to run the check_quota (or whatever the command
is...) This makes a rebooting after a crash *much* faster.

The code that smbclient and smbfs 'share' is the connection setup logic.
Otherwise, they are separate codebases with distinct properties. You
should not make assumptions from one to the other.

Do you have reliability problems in smbclient to report?

Indeed, the freespace reported may not always be correct.

However, what you relay is not what I'm seeing on any of my Samba servers.
If I have 'max disk size = 1', the freespace seen from my Windows
clients is 10GB, until the actual freespace drops below that, when they
then see the actual freespace (ie. 2GB) ...

I tried it, but that's not the correct solution. I've set it to 10 GB and
then it always says that there is 10 GB free, even if
there is only 2 GB free. At least, it doesn't display as garbage anymore,

[Samba] winbindd freezes with write to socket failed! and no more windows authentication is possible

2005-10-04 Thread Jon Bendtsen

Hi

I have a problem with winbindd that freezes such that no windows
authentication is possible.

The auth.log file says
write to socket failed!
internal module error (retval = 3

i have tried with both debian sarge 3.0.14a packages, and i compiled
my own from the source

version 3.0.20

I have tried -Y on winbindd, i have looked over the smb.conf file, i
tried googling for "write to socket failed"
but nothing really usefull came up :( only that others have had the
same problem previously in time.

Re: [Samba] Replace NT 4.0 with Samba PDC but keep PC WINS *Advice*

2005-10-04 Thread Eric Feldhusen
I'd highly recommend "Samba HOW-TO and Reference Guide" and "Samba 3 by
Example" for both questions below. "By example" starts with building a
samba server for a small workgroup, and then takes that example and
builds on it. The "HOW-To and Reference Guide" is THE how-to and
reference (yes, very clever on the title, aren't they?). You can
download both documents at http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/ in PDF or
html format for free or purchase the print editions at any online
store.. ie, Amazon, Bookpool, etc...

For the question regarding WINS, your samba server can be a WINS server
or connect to a WINS server, see Chapter 9, section 5 of the HOW-TO.
For conversion from a winnt PDC to samba PDC, see Chapter 34 of the
HOW-TO. I've converted several winnt PDC to samba PDC. The key
information isn't knowing samba, it's really understanding how a NT PDC
works, if you're not sure, that's going to make it more difficult. But
it can be done, quite easily.

I will be replacing an NT 4.0 PDC which has operated
with only one problem in 6 years with SAMBA. That
being said it hasn't been heavily used.

Step 1 I plan to bring up another NT 4.0 BDC on
the network and after it replicates the information
from the PDC take it off the network and place it in
my lab network.

Step 2 Then promote it to a PDC and test the
migration steps in the lab.

Step 3 I would like to just give the new SAMBA PDC
the IP of the current PDC and replace it.

Does this seem reasonable?

Any advice much appreciated!

[Samba] rpcclient 'setdriver' problem

2005-10-04 Thread manic720

Hello,
I'm new to Samba but I believe I have followed the example pages and
posts to the point where I'm stumped. I'm trying to setup a print
server that acts as a raw print spooler to a few network printers I
have for Windows machines. I twould be nice to have the Samba server
provide the print drivers for the windows boxes when they browse the
neighborhood for the device. I have CUPS and Samba installed
correctly, and can print via IPP from a windows box. I can see the
file and print shares and the Samba server from a windows box. From
rpcclient, I have installed the print driver for the printer using the
'adddriver' command. I can see my printers in 'enumprinters', and can
see the driver from 'enumdrivers'. The problem is when I go try the
'setdriver' command. It fails with a "WERR_ACCESS_DENIED". I've
looked at the debug from this command but nothing pops out at me. Any
advice would be appreciated. I have verified that the 'use client
driver = no' is set in the smb.conf thinking that might be an issue.
I'm logged in under rpcclient as root so I'm not what access it's
referring too.

Thanks
Jeremie

Re: [Samba] Net Rpc Logoff possible?

2005-10-04 Thread Henrik Zagerholm

Sounds like a cool idea!

I'll dig up some info regarding some different native win32 commands
that you can test on.
As the C$ share is always (default anyway) available I should be able
to make a remote logoff without any preconfiguration on my clients.

I'm currently buildning some embedded devices on both Win CE and Unix/
Linux using samba and I'll gladly help you anyway I can with this issue!

BTW what is the lib file for the NET command? I was thinking of
building a native Perl & Ruby module for the NET RPC commands. =)

Thanks again Jerry!

[Samba] smbmount not obeying locks; it will not delete but will overwrite locked files.

2005-10-04 Thread eelco grakist

Hi all,

I have a problem with smbmount. I use smbmount to mount a tree from a
server (either windows xp or linux samba). Then I access the files in it
with the linux smbmount and with windows.

When I open a file (let's say document.doc) in windows with word this
file is sucessfully locked and I cannot overwrite it on another windows
computer.

But when I want to write-access this file with the linux client I can
overwrite it without problems. Though deleting is not possible...

example:
First I open document.doc with word on the windows machine.
Then I try to overwrite document.doc on a second windows machine. This
cannot be done offcourse.
Then I type to overwrite (echo xxx>document.doc) document.doc on a linux
machine (mounted through smbfs). To my surprise this could be done.

Why can the linux smb client overwrite files that cannot be overwritten
on a windows client?

ps> If I use a linux samba server instead of a windows xp server the
problem stays. So it's not a problem with the server.

Linux: Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 1)
Kernel: 2.6.9-11.EL
mount.smbfs: Version 3.0.10-1.4E

Well windows (XP, 2k3) has shutdown command, that enables you to
log a user

off (shutdown -l machinename).
You could try to sniff the packets from that command.
I wonder if samba can do something like that.

Hi,

Thanks for the reponse.
I tried it, but that's not the correct solution. I've set it to 10 GB and then
it always says that there is 10 GB free, even if
there is only 2 GB free. At least, it doesn't display as garbage anymore, but
it's not correct.

Passwords should be encrypted using NTLM by default. See the sections
on 'encrypt passwords' and 'ntlm auth' in the smb.conf man page.

I don't think the data traffic is encrypted. You can tunnel port 139

Try:

remote announce = 192.168.1.255 192.168.2.255 (etc)

replacing the address(es) with your local subnet(s)

So your server will announce itself to the other subnets.
This worked on mine.
NOTE: It may take a few minutes for it to show up after making the change.

We already have 'net rpc shutdown'. so if it an issue if
just adding another flag to that command it's pretty easy.

sniffing shutdown -l would be a good idea. Have to research this

Well windows (XP, 2k3) has shutdown command, that enables you to
log a user

off (shutdown -l machinename).
You could try to sniff the packets from that command.
I wonder if samba can do something like that.

[Samba] AD authentication

2005-10-04 Thread Lorenzo Tan
I'm having trouble getting users to authenticate to my samba file server
(running FreeBSD 5.4). I am able to view users on Active Directory from
BSD via LDAP, kerberos appears to be working properly and I have
nsswitch.conf point to ldap as well. I think my problem is with the pam
config files. I have not changed them yet and I'm a little hesitant to
because the last time I tried changing the pam modules, I locked myself
out of my machine. If this what my problem is, can someone give me an
example of what the pam modules should look like? If there's something
else I've left out, please let me know. I just need some direction.
Thanks.

Side note: I was able to get my samba server to work when I used winbind
however, I had to create local copies of all the accounts. I've been
told that winbind is not needed to get this to work and that I can just
have everything point to LDAP and then have LDAP point to AD.

Hi , in my cases ext3 ist the best system bringing needed funktions (

i think you should choose the filesystem in thinking of the primary use

[Samba] Re: Win XPPro not connecting to samba domain

2005-10-04 Thread Sean W

Hi, I should have included that information.

1. Samba 3.0.10 that comes with Ubuntu 5.04
2. Yes to all of the questions in the smb.conf file in that section.
3. Yes, Wins is setup on the WindowsXP Pro client.
4. Yes, the XP machine can ping the samba server and can map drives to
shares on it. The only problem is that it can't join the domain with
the error indicated below.

For further information, I'm planning on moving to an LDAP backend but
wanted to have the PDC working by itself first as a trial system, that
will give me a bit more time to understand the LDAP workings instead of
just following instructions and kacking when something doesn't work
(like I'm doing now ;) ).

Thanks for the help.

[Samba] Samba process

2005-10-04 Thread Niraj Sehgal
Hi All,

Using top command the samba process shows below entry :

  8611 root 1 580 7696K 6080K cpu/3 574:56 0.85% smbd

 25577 bvuat 1 580 2720K 1736K cpu/10:02 0.30% top

Do u think this is correct, or there is something wrong somewhere. I am
not getting any problems with samba connection but I am trying to debug
why one other process is hanging on this server.

Regards

[Samba] cross subnet browsing over IPSec

2005-10-04 Thread Jonathan Salomon

Until recently I had these settings on the PDC in the smb.conf:

  domain logons = Yes
  os level = 65
  preferred master = Yes
  domain master = Yes
  wins support = Yes

and this on the BDC:

  domain logons = Yes
  os level = 65
  preferred master = Yes
  domain master = No
  wins support = No
  wins server = 192.168.0.4

All machines in both subnets would get 192.168.0.4 (PDC) as WINS server
by the dhcp server. However like stated before this works very slow.
Does anyone know if this is actually is a good approach and the slowness
is cuased by something else?

Anyway I read on a previous posting to this list (and the manual) that
it's possible to use remote browse sync to sync the browse lists. So I
decided to change the strategy and configure the PDC as below:

  domain logons = Yes
  os level = 65
  preferred master = Yes
  domain master = Yes
  wins support = Yes
  remote browse sync = 192.168.4.2

and the BDC as below:

  domain logons = Yes
  os level = 65
  preferred master = Yes
  domain master = No
  wins support = Yes
  remote browse sync = 192.168.0.4

And with this setup the machines in the 192.168.0.0/23 subnet are
getting 192.168.0.4 as WINS server and the machines in the
192.168.4.0/24 subnet 192.168.4.2.

After restarting samba the PDC shows this in the log.nmbd:

[2005/09/22 16:51:38, 0]
nmbd/nmbd_browsesync.c:get_domain_master_name_node_status_fail(488)

  get_domain_master_name_node_status_fail:
Doing a node status request to the domain master browser at IP
10.0.1.10 failed.

  Cannot get workgroup name.

I don't really understand where the 10.0.1.10 comes from as that
machines has no routing/interface configured to such subnet.

At the BDC side the log.nmbd shows:

[2005/09/22 15:55:47, 0]
nmbd/nmbd_browsesync.c:find_domain_master_name_query_fail(353)

  find_domain_master_name_query_fail:
Unable to find the Domain Master Browser name DOMAIN<1b> for the
workgroup DOMAIN.

Unable to sync browse lists in this workgroup.

And indeed the browselists on both subnets do not show each other's
machines. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong here?

Thanks!
Jonathan

There was another gentleman on this list a week or so back who was
writing a Debian Samba-LDAP howto. I'm still waiting for it to get my
Samba setup working against LDAP. I'm still back at the tdb level, which
wouldn't be a problem in my immediate environment, if was actually
working properly! Perhaps someone else can help you, or you can try the
CUPS site (www.cups.org). They also have a discussion forum that may be

Thanks Juha for your reply.

It doesn't work for me. Looks like because i 'am on samba 3.0.14a3
So my next question : how the simplest way to pass to samba 3.0.20a ?
I'm on debian sarge ( apt-cache policy samba gives Candidat : 3.0.14a-3)
so i would have to find another way to install samba 3.0.20a.

I'm assuming here that you're trying to get around having to connect to the
printer as an admin so that the driver loads. I would love to find a
no-intervention way of making this happen myself. I have found that there
is a local security flag you can flip which will allow users to install
printer drivers, the side effect being that they could possibly change 'any'
driver. The tedious part is that you must do this on every machine once.

I guess you just have to pick your poison... Do it a hard way every time and
know that the users still are locked down or loosen the reigns a bit and not
worry about it every time. Your call.

that's for a home directory

the user's profile directory should and can be made by the user when
necessary and there's no need to script it at all. If you need to have
some default settings, that is what the 'Default User' is for - see
Samba documentation.

[Samba] Windows cache session used while PDC reachable

2005-10-04 Thread Jerome Tournier
Hello,
i've aleady asked this question, but i still have the problem and
found no solution :
I'm using samba3.0.7 (RedHat AS3U4) and get the following behavior:
1) i have a win2000 workstation on my samba server with an account created.
2) i can log on the workstation. Windows cache session is enable (i
can't change this).
3) i change the account password of the user directly on the server (with
  smbldap-passwd for example)
4) i log on the workstation with the old password (which is wrong now)
5) connection succeeded (with windows cache session i imagine), but
the sambabadpasswordcount is set to 5 !
How can this happend ? I thought that the cache session was used by
Windows only when the domain controller can't be reached, am i wrong ?
Why sambabadpasswordcount could jump from 0 to 5 ? Is they a way to
resolve this ?
Thanks a lot.

so the whole tree is searched while on other machines it is:

nss_base_passwd ou=People

and here the machines account are not seen.

Samba use a other user than manager.

I don't understand why samba call nss_ldap and why nss_ldap use the old
password.

Ok, that is very downlevel as bos.adt.include is now at 5.2.0.75 (available)
and I'm running 5.2.0.61 without experiencing your issue.

AIX 5.3 is fine, but a suggestion to those supporting you: Operating on
current code reduces this sort of issue. Often they should consider at least
running the latest maintenance release.

Have a test machine (if fiscally achievable) to try out both AIX and Samba
versions and beat the crap out of it :-) Spend time with the torture code.
(There are a great deal of used IBM resellers out there who can get you a
heck of a good price and still be under IBM support contract)

When you are satisfied with the results, move it to production. Any other
method leads to chaos, pointing fingers and animosity.

Cheers,

Bill

[Samba] 1 recycle directory for all shares

2005-10-04 Thread Patrick DUBAU

Hi,

i configured samba to handle the deletded files in the recycle directory.
That works fine for the share it is defined for.

But my goal is to put all the deleted files of all shares into a single
recycle directory.

exemple :

[share1]
path = /samba/info
vfs objects = recycle
recycle:repository = /samba/.recycle

[share2]
path = /samba/compta
vfs objects = recycle
recycle:repository = /samba/.recycle
...

Is that possible ? (i have samba 3.0.14.a3)

[Samba] Question about SIDs RIDs UIDs and GIDs

Hi Guys,
Just a quick one...I use ldap backend for samba users and unix(PAM+NSS)
users. If I was creating a new user/group/computer manually do the RID and
UID/GID have to match up somehow or something?? I mean I've been reading
somewhere that that RID should be somethings like UID+2x1000 or something??
Algorithmicbase?? Whats this all about?
Am I making any sense?

[Samba] Win98 profiles are not loaded from Samba

2005-10-04 Thread Pinel Nutzer

Hello,

I have got a problem with the installation of SAMBA. As I am a beginner
in SAMBA installations, I hope somebody can help me. I use the SAMBA
version of SuSe 9.3 and I try to connect several Windows 98 clients to
the Samba server. My problem is:

1. I have created a new Linux / Samba user.

2. I log on with this account on a Windows 98 client, then I install a
network drive and I log out. When logging out, the profile is transfered
to the samba server.

3. When I now log on from another client with this account, I can not
find any trace of that profile which was saved, although data was
transfered between Samba and the client: The networt drive does not
exist, the favourites in MSIE we not token, an the file "Eigene Dateien"
(private data) was not token.

I have tried out many things with control panel->user and control
panel->passwords, but this did not solve the problem.

I suppose that a simple configuration might be the problem, but I don't
know what that could be. It would be great, if anybody out there could
help me.

Thanks alot,

Benjamin

[Samba] Automating Creation Of Profile Directories For New Users

2005-10-04 Thread Timothy Dutton
Hi

This might seem to be a stupid question but here goes anyway.

I am running a samba server as a PDC with roaming profiles enabled. My
profiles are stored on the linux box at /samba/profiles/username.

I tried setting a script to create the profile at the same time as adding
the new user

/usr/sbin/useradd -m u%

cd /samba/profiles

mkdir %u

When I tried adding the a new user I got the message user not found and
found that the script had created a folder %u in the profiles share.

Any thoughts as to where I might be going wrong here?

Is it possible to add the entries to the /etc/skel or do these only apply to
the home directory.

Thanks

Tim

What I mean, suppose you have many classrooms, different printers (which
sometimes change) in these classroms - how do you manage which
workstation (or a group of them) will use which printer?

So far I've been using WPKG for that - as I described here:
http://wpkg.org/wiki/index.php/Printer_configuration

But somehow I feel it isn't the easiest and most intuitive way - it is
basically running:

rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /q /y /ga /in /n \\server\kyocera

as a domain administrator when machine is booted, and then in a netlogon
script when a user logs in.

In other ways, I'm looking for an easier way to do it :)

Doh! I should read the entrie message first. Sorry. Ignore
my previous mail. I just saw wpkg. What exactly about this
don't you like ? Managing printer connections in a logon script
is pretty simple. What are you looking to simplify?

[Samba] Net Rpc Logoff possible?

If it is not possible as today would it be possible if we could trace

Two issues I've seen recently is that certain interim versions of
