Normally I synchronize with the follow command without any problems:
rsync -aPx --numeric-ids / someserver:/storage_location

This will also migrate user/group identities on the files...

Hi

Windows is not able to connect to the same server with two different users. The
first one authenticated as "nobody", the second one was with the supplied
username/password.

You have to manually delete the network connection of the user "nobody". After
then you will be able to connect to the desired share with the given username
and password.

Hmm... I will try it... we have "only" 500 Users... I think some sort of
rsync -aPx --numeric-ids /mountpoint of reiserfs /mountpoint of a
laaaggeee sratch disk, creating new filesystem and finally a rsync
back to the new fs will do it? Or are there any better solutions?

But it will take some days for all necessary steps like backup and so on...

[Samba] Duplicate sambaSID - How to avoid?

2005-11-01 Thread Roger Eisenecher
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi List

We habe about 150 Clients in our network. All clients are participants
of the domain. We deploy our images with Ghost. The image is prepared
with SYSPREP which will generate a new SID on the first boot of the
machine. We automated the process to join the machines automatically to
our domain with some tools. Our Domain server runs with samba 3.0.13,
OpenLDAP as the backend and smbldap-tools. In most cases the machines
could join the domain without any problems. But sometimes samba tries to
join them with an already existing sambaSID so the join will fail. The
corresponding entries in the log file looks like:

[2005/11/01 16:11:57, 0] passdb/pdb_ldap.c:ldapsam_add_sam_account(1795)
  ldapsam_add_sam_account: SID
'S-1-5-21-3654624081-408594837-1692793938-3108' a
lready in the base, with samba attributes
[2005/11/01 16:11:57, 0] rpc_server/srv_samr_nt.c:_samr_create_user(2350)
could not add user/computer sysw2130$ to passdb. Check permissions?
[2005/11/01 16:11:58, 0] lib/util_sock.c:write_socket_data(430)

And yes, samba is right: The given sambaSID exists already in LDAP for
another machine. So my question: Could someone explain me how the
sambaSID will be calculated? How could it happen that two different
machines get the same sambaSID?

Any suggestions are very welcome ;-)

Interesting to hear that because I had the same problem with machine
accounts. My question was how the sambaSID will be generated but I did
not receive any answer to this question...

Our only solution was to remove the old account and recreate them.

[Samba] sambaSID generation for machine accounts...

Hi List

We are using Samba 3.0.13 with LDAP as our backend. We are using WinXP
in our environement where we reload the machines from time to time with
some imaging technology. During this process the machines joins
automatically the (samba-) domain. In most cases this works without
problems. But some machines could not join the domain due some error
while joinig the domain. After some investigation I found in the log
file of samba that the machine which tried to join the domain generated
a sambaSID which was already used for another machine. So my question
how could this happen? Any ideas?

Okey. Whats then the right way to initialize the drivers on the server?

I installed the printer drivers through the wizard on the server as
mentioned in the manuals about samba. Then I set up the standard values
for the printer driver on the server. So I thought that so the drivers
are correctly initialised. But I also saw that the clients do not honor
this settings...

We are using HP Laserjet 2300DN printers (all handled by samba/cups). I
am not 100% sure but if I remember correctly we had the same problem
with the cups postscript printer driver. Perhaps samba does not maintain
correct standard values for network printer?

[Samba] What is going on with my samba?

2005-09-15 Thread Roger Eisenecher

Hi List!!!

Please spend my some light on my problem!

I'm using samba 3.0.13 in a large environement because we had problems
with the normal tdb-passwd backend we reinstalled our environement with
samba and we are using now the ldap backend. For our administrative
tasks we are using the smbldap-tools from idealx. We are not very happy
with this solution because we have some effects we do not like and we do
not know why they happen:

* Some machines produces a smabaSID which already exist for another
machine when the try to join the domain. How are the sambaSIDs determined?

* Users suddenly couldn't log on to the domain and I do not know why.
Usually a password reset solves the problem: For your reference here I
have a such an account which could not log in:

Any suggestions are welcome ;-)

As Jerome said samba would add the additional necessary attributes when
the workstation joins the domain. The ldap script has only to add the
posix stuff.

I do not know if this is correct because sometimes I have also the
problem that some workstations could not join the domain. If I check
then the ldap I could only see the entries necessary for a posixAccount.
If I delete this information from ldap my workstation is able to join
the domain which failed before... But only 2 to 5 of 200 workstations
will fail...

I hope this will help you.
