[Samba] Simple question about Samba3 and Samba4 in the same site

[Alejandro Escanero Blanco]

I want to deploy a test server with the same SID and same users as the 
samba3 server.

My idea is next:
- Samba3 PDC running actually is located throught WINS
- Samba4 is located by DNS putting his own DNS server in the client 
configuration.


The two servers are in the same network/VLAN separate from the users 
network/VLAN.


This test could give me any problem?

net command.


The documentation shows:

[RPC|ADS] USER ADD name [password] [-F user flags] [-C comment]

But the user flags are not mentioned anywhere.

Are they implemented?

As far I know, you cannot use the same name for users and a machines
account.

This is the way that I follow to create machine accounts:

1. Create a "user" account in /etc/passwd (note the '$')

# useradd cpu3$

2. Create the machine account with smbpasswd (note now '$' is not in the
name)

# smbpasswd -a -m cpu3

This cannot be answered categorically.

This depends entirely on your actual smb.conf. If you make
use of now removed parameters it will obviously not work the
same way any more.

This sounds to me to be a more responsible approach. I don't know
how "mission critical" your Samba service is to your institution,
but probably you want to do a few Samba-3.0 tests in a separate test
environment...
So is there a step by step how to upgrade?01

I am not aware of one.

Just one hint: Use "testparm". And be aware that the syntax to use
it has slightly changed from 2.2.x to 3.0.
2.2.x testparm would give you the actual config as used by Samba
(including all the default setting compiled in)
3.0. testparm needs to be called with a "-v" parameter to give you
the same style output.
I'd suggest to re-direct your current config (full scope) into
a file:
   testparm > testparm2.smb228.txt   (hit ENTER twice)

Then transfer your current smb.conf onto your Samba-3.0 testbox,
under the name of "smb.conf.228". Here you can again run "testparm"
against this file and re-direct the output for extensive studies:
   testparm -v smb.conf.228 > testparm3.smb228.txt  (hit ENTER twice)

(Again, note the use of the "-v" parameter).
The name "testparm3.smb228.txt" should indicate that it was generated
on Samba 3.0 by using testparm version 3.0, and that it used the "old"
2.2.8 smb.conf.
That way you should quickly be able to spot the soft points of
your configuration and modify it accordingly.

Just thought i'd share a quick tid bit of info I found out today as to WHY 
I have to run wins on my samba PDC...

I was in the process today of setting up some VPN connections through our 
firewall. Reading through the docs, there was a part there that 
specifically said that a Wins server is needed. I was a little surprised by 
this so I contacted the vendor to verify this.
They informed me that a WINS server is very much needed or the VPN would 
not work properly at all.

Must to my dismay, looks like im up a creek with out a paddle at this point.

Oh well. Hopefully, in the future, when management starts listening instead 
of barking, I can set up things my way. :)

I appreciate everyones help on this list. Everyone is great.

Since I am running samba 2.2.8a as a PDC on my network and all of my 
workstations for my clients are Windows 2000 Pro, would it be better to set 
up the PDC to run as a wins server? wins server = yes

I was just curious because I found some documentation on the wins server 
option, but for the most part, it was glossed over with real no 
explanation. Granted, I know what wins purpose is, but would like to find 
out more about better implementation in my network..

[Samba] Simple question - Machine / User relationsip

Can someone explain to me the mechanizm that Samba uses to relate 
Machines to Users?  I am trying to set up a Samba-LDAP PDC and it seems 
to work OK but I get "No mapping between account names and security IDs 
was done."   This would seem to be a simple user/group 
ownership/permissions thing.  Now I have the following potentially 
pertinent ou's:

People
Computers
Groups

One would think that simply adding a group or having People become 
members of a group would fix the problem.  What fields should I be 
looking at though? Where is this theoretical reltionship stored?

Upgrade to 2.2.3a or better still wait a little bit for 2.2.4 to be 
released.

[Samba] Simple (?) question...

I'm not a very sophisticated Samba user, nor do I totally understand all
the gory details with MS Win___ products.

But I'm seeing a different behavior after moving our storage from a
Windows NT 4 server, to a SAMBA server.

I've got a client app (running on NT 4 workstations) that needs to
access the data on the server.

Its a read only share, basically just serving up images - no
writing/modifying of data is done by the client apps.

When the data was on a NT Server, I initially logged the workstation
onto the server (using a DIFFERENT username/pw than the user uses for
the workstation) ONCE - and then every time in the future the app ran,
I'm assuming the username/pw was recalled from the windows password file
(some kind acl ??) - and it just logged in as the software attempted to
connect.

Now, with SAMBA on the backside (using the exact same client machines),
each time the machine is restarted the username/pw needs to be re
entered.

I'm not sure why or where this happening.

Any thoughts ??
