Hi Stan,

I use Ultra VNC for Windows under Wine to great advantage.
There are some Wine quirks, but I get around them.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, Konstantin, I should have indicated in the
email that I waited 3 weeks after sending the first email. Earlier today,
other members explained that there might have been a glitch that would prevent
members from seeing some emails sent before June 16. I resent my initial
question and got many helpful suggestions that I will try.

As to your advice to purchase a support contract, Linux Community webpage says
about its mailing lists: "If you need help, ask. If you can help, please do so
respectfully."

Right now, I am asking people for help on this list. When/if I will know as
much as they do, I hope to be able to help other list members. That's what the
list is about, right?

Participants of this forum do not have an obligation to answer to any/all
questions
and you should not create an expectation that all questions asked here must be
answered.

If your business requires timely and correct answers, you should
consider purchasing a support contract or hiring a linux expert.

Sorry for a surely answer.

Re: Help connecting to VNC server

2017-06-26 Thread Andrew Komornicki
Hi,

I believe that the problem is not with your configuration, but with
your IPtables settings. You need to open up some ports which by
default are currently blocked. I believe they are in the 5900 range.

You can try a simple experiment. Turn off iptables; try to connect
to your Linux machine, and see if the problem goes away. I believe
that it will. Look at the man pages for VNC and see which port(s) to
open in the IPtables config. Hope this helps.

Andrew

Hi,
download/install nmap for windows and scan your SL 6.9 box and see if
the VNC server port is visible to your client.

If you log on the SL box, you can check, if the vnc runs eg by:
netstat -tulpn | grep -i vnc

Hmm.
According to the headers as I received them, your original message
was received by the list server at

   Mon, 26 Jun 2017 14:04:35 -0500
and the message to which I am replying at
   Mon, 26 Jun 2017 13:00:31 -0500
- over an hour *earlier*. You complained that no-one had replied
before many of our mailboxes will have received your question.

Given that we are spread around the world and have other things to do,
I always allow at least 24 hours before I start thinking that no-one
has replied.

I am stuck and really hope to find guidance online. Can anyone
suggest a list/forum that would be better suited for such

There is a forum for Scientific Linux at
  https://scientificlinuxforum.org/
which might be able to help you in real-time
(I've never used it).

I assume you started the VNC server, and connected to the same display
with the viewer?

Is the SL system running a firewall?
Can you ssh to the SL system?

I just did a quick look in my un-deleted emails, and didn’t find your question.
However, per Bonnie on the SL team, there was a problem with the list where not
all messages were getting sent to the list. If your question was asked prior to
June 16, you may want to resend.
