Re: Proper forum suggestion?
Glad it worked out for you, at work we were using something else before x2go after finding it and playing around with it we switched to that on the servers where people need a remote graphical environment. Thank you, Maarten. I followed Miles, Karel, Andrew (and other members') instructions, which helped me move forward with my VNC problem, but X2go is what finally did the trick. Cheers, Stan
Re: Proper forum suggestion?
X2go is also an option: http://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php. You connect via the ssh port. I *wrote* the first published port of VNC to SunOS way back when, which was a pain in the keister due to X11 version incompatibilities. It's gotten much, much easier to use since then. I'll also point out that VNC used to have some significant security issues with keeping passwords in clear text in $HOME/.vnc/, which I think has been much reduced. If you decide that the X server built into your VNC client isn't good enough, you can also consider the personal or even professional versions of NX, which is available from https://www.nomachine.com/. The big advantages are that it's a better user interface, better local X server on your clients, and provides *much* better handling of multiple users on your Linux server. It does not replace Remote Desktop, which is the preferred and more stable way to log into a Windows box remotely. Frankly, there are a number of scammers out there who will talk you into running VNC or tools like it on your Windows box, and then monitor you rWindows use remotely. And VNC doesn't have a good concept of "only use one copy". People tend to run numberous VNC servers because they've simply lost track, and those are chewing up time and leaving open security vulnerabilities if mishandled.

There are some Wine quirks, but I get around them. http://www.uvnc.com/downloads/ultravnc.html WARNING: Lots of JUNKWARE !! -T -- ~~ Computers are like air conditioners. Re: Proper forum suggestion?
Sorry for the misunderstanding, Konstantin, I should have indicated in the email that I waited 3 weeks after sending the first email. Earlier today, other members explained that there might have been a glitch that would prevent members from seeing some emails sent before June 16. I resent my initial question and got many helpful suggestions that I will try. As to your advice to purchase a support contract, Linux Community webpage says about its mailing lists: "If you need help, ask. If you can help, please do so respectfully." Right now, I am asking people for help on this list. When/if I will know as much as they do, I hope to be able to help other list members. That's what the list is about, right?

According to the headers as I received them, your original message was received by the list server at Mon, 26 Jun 2017 14:04:35 -0500 and the message to which I am replying at Mon, 26 Jun 2017 13:00:31 -0500 - over an hour *earlier*. You complained that no-one had replied before many of our mailboxes will have received your question. Given that we are spread around the world and have other things to do, I always allow at least 24 hours before I start thinking that no-one has replied. I am stuck and really hope to find guidance online. Can anyone suggest a list/forum that would be better suited for such questions? There is a forum for Scientific Linux at https://scientificlinuxforum.org/ which might be able to help you in real-time (I've never used it). -- Andrew C Aitchison Cambridge, UK
Re: Proper forum suggestion?
I just did a quick look in my un-deleted emails, and didn’t find your question. However, per Bonnie on the SL team, there was a problem with the list where not all messages were getting sent to the list. If your question was asked prior to June 16, you may want to resend.
