In any case (aileron or no-aileron model) , you should
gain speed.
So nose down, speed up . than you will
be able to pull it back to level flight.

[RCSE] Chrysalis 2M

1999-09-03 Thread soaring

Does anyone have experience with the DJ Aerotech Chrysalis 2 meter? A number of my
club members(M.A.S.S.) are considering a group purchase of this sailplane for a one
design project. One member got an unfavorable report on the wings folding at the Nats
this year. This really doesn't put me off because of the number of similar incidents
there this year. But if anyone can help on this, it will be appreciated.

Thanks --- Jack Dubich

1999-09-03 Thread Jack Strother

I guess that I am luicky somehow...
MY wife generally goes with me. She has been an AMA member since we met...she flies on
occasion, she has her own special radio ordered from Karlton, and wants to do more
with hans launch.
I can afford any of it, but I buy it, and she supports me.
Between that, a clean house and really good grub, what more can a man ask for...
I AM VERY FORTUNATE

Is it possible to have a wife in this hobby? It's been tough juggling
both. If I give more attention to one the other one suffers. :-)

Taking a break from contests for 1 month, well at least away contests.

Hi combat lovers,

At this site you can see the first combat wing designed and produced in
Brazil.
It has 2 versions EPP leading edge and full EPP.
The pilots feedback's say that it has a great penetration as well as
manoeuvrability and weight less than 450 gr. (!) (16 oz)
Excellent performance in light wind ...
About the price .  Us$ 25.00 () for a complete kit with vinyl
covering tape, horns, push-rod ... etc.

Take a look at the video clip and judge by yourself

[RCSE] glue injector?

1999-09-03 Thread Berris Edward

The wing skin on my Samari has delaminated in a few spots. I saw a glue
injector that resembles a syringe but with a couple of important
differences. One was that the plunger screws in rather than simply
being pushed down. The second difference is that instead of a needle
there is a very fine needle like device that has a 90 degree bend in it
so that glue can be shot in side ways.

Does anyone know where to find one?

[RCSE] RE Limited Launch HLG tasks

1999-09-03 Thread Mark Howard

OK, how's this for HLG contest rules?
For all rounds:

One launch per pilot per round.
10 min. window.
10 min. max.
Pilot must fly the same plane for every round.
Pilot must catch plane for flight to count.
Pilot must land (catch) before the end of the round for the flight to count.
Sudden death or winners fly against winners.
25' x 25' field boundaries.
Sliding Bell Curve Scoring:
Bell curve (actually half a bell) - slides to highest score - normalized to
1000.
Bell is calculated such that 95% of possible points are within 5% of the
winner's time (30 secs for 10 mins, 15 secs for 5 mins )
E.g. if the best flight is 5 min - that pilot gets 1000.
Without the bell curve a flight of 2.5 mins is worth 500 pts. With the bell
curve, it's worth about 5 points.

The more rules the better!

[RCSE] glassing

1999-09-03 Thread Steve Kerrin

I've been rebuilding an old 60" sloper and
have run into a problem in glassing the fuse.
I know a vast number of the list members are
into composites and glassing so here is my
question:

I glassed the fuselage with a layer of 3/4 oz

glass according to the methods published
recently in MAN as well as other articles by
Jim Ryan and others.

No problem so far. Everything cured nicely, I

gave it a light sanding, wiped it down with
methanol and applied a second coat of resin
thinned slightly with methanol (I'm using
Jeffco 1314/3102 as it is on the shelf
locally). Everything flowed out nicely so I
hung it up to cure. Next morning, I checked
it and found that it had beaded-up during
curing. Not droopily beads, but long soft
ridges. Lots of sanding requiredUGH!

I ran a few experiments on small test
sections with thinned and unthinned resin,
with similar results. I understand that some
finishing resins contain a bit of wax which
could cause such behavior, but this one does
not (according to the supplier).

Before I go purchase another kind of resin
(seems the most obvious thing to try next)
are there any ideas from the vast knowledge
pool out
there?

TIA

[RCSE] Retriever Line Answer

1999-09-03 Thread Tom Hoopes

Thanks to everyone that responded to my request for information on
retriever line.

I got a lot of responses and the apparent choice is:

Memphis Net & Twine Co 1-800-238-6380.
We use their No 9 size white bonded twisted nylon seine twine ( 86 lb test,
2160 feet to the spool at $6.90 per spool). Stock No TWC1. (Thanks for all
of the detail Ron!).

Now that all that I have been saved of all that footwork, I can get back to
finishing the killer mods to my Skeeter, 6 servos full-house. Let's see
anyone try to touch me in a downwind turn ;-)

Thanks again,

This is correct in theory, but it's my understanding that nicads don't like
to be hooked up in parallel. They don't neccessarily charge and discharge
equally.
Better to use larger capacity cells.

Re: [RCSE] Tow line on Twin Star??

1999-09-03 Thread Tom Hoopes

At 12:08 PM 9/3/99 -0400, you wrote:
>Where/How do you connect the tow line on a Twin Star for H/L towing?
>Tom

Tom,

You have two choices of attachment of the tow line to the Twin Star,
releasable or captive. In either case, attach the towline to the top of the
wing of the Twin Star 3" aft of the leading edge.

Use approximately 30' of towline (kite string, crochet cotton thread, or
dental floss) with a single #64 rubber band cut in half and spliced in-line
with the towline approximately 3'-5' ahead of the HLG end. Use a single
1"-2" loop in the end of the line to place over the HLG "aerotow" hook with
is made from a paper clip that had one end bent vertically (slight rear
rake). Tape the paper clip to the TOP of the HLG between the canopy and
nose of the HLG. The HLG is released by having the Twin Star throttle back
then a quick blip of down stick at the HLG or and outside loop ends the tow.

Most higher performance HLGs tend to "over fly" the Twin Star so adding
some camber or flap before launch helps to maintain towline tension.
Launching is done by hand, with the Twin Star pilot standing 10'-15' ahead
of the HLG pilot/plane. On release of the Twin Star (no running is needed),
the HLG pilot does a smooth, straight ahead, gentle release and within
20'-30' things should be going nicely. The key to success, as with large
scale aerotow, is communication between the Twin Star pilot and the HLG
pilot. Big turns are best, keeping the HLG to the outside of the turn to
avoid being whipping around and probable release.

As I mentioned earlier, the towline can be releasable or captive at the
Twin Star. Although captive is easiest and will do just fine with an
experienced Twin Star driver and HLG pilot, early on, mistakes happen
quickly and it is often difficult to seperate. On the other hand, a fairly
simple release mechanism can be built using one of your cast off, pesky
S-90 micro servos, a piece of small carbon arrow shaft and a piece of small
diameter piano wire. A small slot is cut (90 degrees to the length of the
shaft) into the arrow shaft approximately 1/4" from the top. A hole is
drilled through the Twin Star wing 3" aft of the leading edge for the
diameter of the arrow shaft. Epoxy the tubing into the wing with the slot
1/4" above the top surface of the wing and facing to the rear. Mount the
S-90 underneath the wing with some double stick tape so that the end of the
servo arm is directly under the hole in the arrow shaft and the servo
clears the wing saddle. Bend a Z bend in some .030" piano wire. Temporarily
attach the wire to the servo arm, set the arm's throw to the "up" position
(arm closest to the lower surface of the wing. Through the rear facing slot
cut in the arrow shaft, mark the piano wire. Pull the wire out, cut it
1/16"-1/8" longer than the mark. Re-install, retract the servo, tie a loop
in the tow plane side of the towline, drop the loop over the arrow shaft,
pull it forward slightly into the slot, engage the servo and the towline is
now captive on the piano wire.

Just another attempt to seek some fun with risk ;-)
