Re: [RCSE] EPP Wish List

1999-09-19 Thread J.P. Morere

OOOH! You pick 'em good. I think that that should be a fairly easy
plane to kit, and would make a beautiful PSS or combat plane. I wish I
had infinite hangar space, as there are many planes like this that I
would like to add to my fleet. Only two LITTLE problems - limited
funds, and my house is already FULL of planes (some of them have even
been built and flown :-) ...

Good sky;

Hello Harley,

Your post has got me thinking about a potential alternative. Let me know if
we could perhaps work something out when you order them - I would like to
offer them with my molded kits. Maybe we could pool an order?

[RCSE] HLG help in Colorado Springs/Denver

1999-09-19 Thread Tom Serkowski

I just got the bug to get back into RC soaring...

It's been about 12+ years since I flew RC but at that time I was flying
various hot slopers and a Carrera Draco - 11', so I think my fingers are
probably still in the intermediate+ level of coordination ;)

I fly full size gliders (ASW-20B - see http://www.serkowski.com) and I
just can't get to the airport as often as I'd like, so I want something
to carry around with me to toss at lunch (ragged ridge behind the
office), before and after flying the 'real thing', etc.

When I lived in southern California, seems that I couldn't help but run
into folks flying gliders, but so far haven't seen much here in CO - but
I haven't looked hard.

I have nothing right now, so will need to start from scratch. So here's
your chance: if you had $400 or so, what radio/glider would you buy?

Not much time for building so I prefer ARF. Most fields here have rough
vegetation, so I'd rather not have a clear film covering. Is it asking
too much for a glider that can work light thermals AND still handle
10-15 mph on a small ridge? A 2 piece wing would be nice so I don't
trash it in the car.

Anyone in the Colorado Springs/Canyon City/Denver area fly these and
willing to help me?

Thanks

[RCSE] Bomber Event at Poway

1999-09-19 Thread Dan

Hi All--

OK--I give in! I have been accused of keeping this info secret to give the
THSS contingent at the Poway CSR today an unfair advantage, but that is not
true--especially since I haven't told most of them what the rules are
either! I'm innocent, I tell you!

Here they are in a nutshell:

I lieu of having a real bomber to fly, I think we should allow any plane
with a wingspan greater than 60" to be the "bomber". It should, however, be
an EPP plane that can withstand a hit or two. A plane such as a Highlander,
TG-3 or something similar would work well. The remainder of the "squadron"
would consist of three pilots flying 48" EPP interceptor/fighter planes and
a score keeper. The bomber would fly an evasive pattern (no offensive
maneuvers allowed) traversing the slope from pylon to pylon while being
protected by the fighters that also have the opportunity to attack the
opposing bomber.

Scoring would be as follows:

Hit opposing bomber: 1 point
Downing bomber: 5 points
Downing fighter: 1 point

Round will last 10 minutes (less if time constraints arise). Relaunches are
allowed. Two squadrons will fly at a time; three squadrons could fly if
necessary.

No gifts, awards or trophies will be awarded. We just wanna have some fun!

Thanks to Jerry Craft for allowing us to add this event to his well run CSR!

See you all in a few hours.

[RCSE] 1st open class plane

1999-09-19 Thread John Jenks

Why fiddle with intermediate performance planes. You want a plane that
can sky out from a handlaunch, easy to build, ugly, withstand pedal to
the floor on launch, and has won countless competitions, and less than
$500? Get a MANTIS for $450 it is the best performing plane for the $.
BTW I have no commercial interest in the glider hobby. If you want
performance & pretty Sal, Ed Sleager, RnR and countless others will be
glad to help you.

[RCSE] F3F Race Results

1999-09-19 Thread Tom Copp

The wind blew all week! Then Saturday morning the whole world (Southern
California anyway) was covered by a thick marine layer no wind, no sun, no
thermals. We started when the wind blew enough to support flight; it was
decided (by me) to start round zero. There was only 13 entered and for 1/2
the field, this was their first F3F race. Everyone worked well together and
helped out with the task of running the race.
The lift was flyable, probably very close to the F3F minimum velocity all
day. There was actually a few times when the planes made that "go fast"
sound. Well the goal of breaking into the 30's was modified to breaking into
the 50's. Jerry Craft with his new Brisk II was closest with a 61.10. The
lift was on the verge of requiring ballast, everyone tried to find the best
wing loading to squeeze a little extra speed from the conditions. Bruce
Beddoe flew his OD model very well to win a round and take 3rd, Bruce looked
on track the whole day. I think the California F3F series is starting to dig
up some very competitive pilots. Keep on coming!!
I want to thank everyone who showed up and put in a long day. I hope you had
some fun and can see the potential for competitive slope racing coming back
to California. It will only work with your help.

I have recently acquired a Nimbus kit, I would guess 20 years old or so. The

anyone know where I can find one of these fuselages?

[RCSE] First Open Class Plane

1999-09-19 Thread JBonk

So , [EMAIL PROTECTED] you're ready to step up to a full house open class plane
? Well here's a few things to keep in mind. First off , and I'm going to
take a big guess here, you are probably going to want to start out with a
plane that's a little slower , and a bit more forgiving than todays typical
competition class 120 inchers. The biggest single problem that pilots have
when transitioning from RES to Ailerons and Flaps is speed. Everything
seems to happen faster , the plane flys faster , turns are pretty much
instantaneous, Landing approaches (prior to dropping the flaps ) are whole
new thing due to the effectiveness of the control surfaces. Most pilots
who are just beginning to fly full house open class planes try to fly them
too slowly. So my advice is to pick a plane with a slower flying
airfoil/planform. It will still be jump in performance , but you will
probably become comfortable with it much quicker , and because of that you
will find yourself exploring air that you might not have tried with a RES
Plane.

While the Bird of Prey and the Victory are both excellent Airplanes , My
vote is for the Alcyone ( also from NSP ) . This plane is very relaxing to
fly and is almost impossible to tip stall ( I really think you would have
to work at it ). Put a little "Extra CF" on the spars and this plane will
easily take a really hard launch .
I'm still mad at myself for selling mine!

Re: [RCSE] Ist open class glider

1999-09-19 Thread Tom Broeski

I agree, Either BoP or Victory.
Both planes are winners and can float (thermal turn at 10'), and are easier to fly
than most 2M. If you have lots of money try the Stork.

[RCSE] hobby shack's Sierra 2.5m sailplane

1999-09-19 Thread Brian C

Has anyone on this list had any experience with the Sierra
2.5m distributed by hobby shack? ( http://www.hobbyshack.com/gallery/129090.htm)
From what I can see the model is a very attractive airplane, and very
reasonably priced considering the high tech construction and high level of
prefabrication.
