[RCSE] Need help finding small dia. titanium rod

2000-12-21 Thread ALNephew

Does anyone know a source for titanium rod/wire in approximately 3/32 inch
diameter equals about .093 inches equals about 2.3 to 2.4 mm, or somewhat
smaller even? Intended use is a bent two-piece wing connector for a HLG wing
that has a dihedral angle too great for a straight carbon fiber rod-in-tube
or tube-in-tube. Since titanium is as strong as steel but lighter than
aluminum, it seems like good stuff for this application. The smallest Small
Parts has is 1/4 inch.

Another desireable solution would be a carbon fiber rod that size with the
correct bend, but is finding that impossible?

Suggestions welcomed.

TIA

[RCSE] 555 & Stylus programming ?

2000-12-21 Thread D Hauch/ D Unruh

Hi,
I have a HLG with ailerons and v-tail. Is it possible to get
spoilerons or camber adjustments from my (basic) Stylus
without using a Y-connector?
Appreciate any help, thanks.

Re: [RCSE] re: buy an addiction

2000-12-21 Thread Marc Webster

Hey Glen,

You mean there realy is a Walla Walla Washington, I thought that only
existed on Bugs Bunny. Just Kidding!

Anyway to your question. The Best way to learn is the way most people have.
Find someone in your club who is familiar with the process and offer to
help to learn the process. Actualy, you will probably be a hinderance at
first, but with practice the person will appreciate the help. The bagging
process itself is fairly easy, the hard part is making the templates,
preparing the cores and cutting all the materials prior to bagging. You
will be amazed and humbled at all that it takes just to get ready to bag.
And after all of this, there is not any gaurantee the wing will be any good.
Those prices that Fred Sage and others charge for a set of wings and stabs
will now seem like a bargain and they are, but anyone can buy a set of
wings. It's one thing to make your own. Also when you make your own you
can experiment and incorporate what you want in a wing such as what I
mentioned in my prior posting(longer spar and I forgot to mention I like
Kevlar hinges).

If you don't have anyone to learn from. I would suggest purchasing a
feathercut machine or making your own, there are a lot of home made wing
cutters with plans on the net. You will also need an airfoil program, I use
compufoil. And the most important of all a large work surface that is
PERFECTLY flat. I currently use two Solid core doors, but I have recently
purchased some 5/8" x 4' x 10' Aluminum & composite Honeycomb sheets that
are flat and will not warp. This stuff is comonly used as aircraft flooring
in jumbo jets. I hope to rebuild my workbench over winter. Once you have
these things, you can search the net for help and then buy your materials.
I would suggest your first wings be for some sort of slope airplane, because
they are smaller and most likely will end up on the heavy side.
Scrollsander.com has some good information. Anyway, good luck, and if you
need any help send me an e-mail and I will try to help.

[RCSE] re: buy an addiction

2000-12-21 Thread Marc Webster

Hey Oleg,

Contrary to popular belief, the addiction is not a new design, It has slowly
but surely rose to the top of the contest placing as more people are flying
them now. This is due to the fact that Fred Sage has picked up production
and it is more available now. The addiction actually started out as a
design by one of our club members here in Santa Clarita about 4 years ago.
My dad carved the fuselage plug and a guy named John Johnson designed the
wings and the light layup. After John got out of the hobby, fred sage
stepped in to keep up with the demand. John gave me all of his tooling
fixtures except the fuselage mold so since then, I have bagged my own and
have not purchased one from Fred. I still buy the fuselage from him though.

In my current layup, I used what I had on hand. I used Blue foam cores, I
would of liked to use spyder foam but I did not have any on hand. My spar
is a carbon tube that is used as the wing joiner tube. I use a full length
of it 30" in each wing half. This allows me to omit a sub rib because the
spar is so long. Fred uses the same spar but only 10" long and no sub rib.
A few of our club members have folded his wings right were the carbon tube
ends. I am in no way saying freds wings are bad, I think they are of
exceptional quality. I just feel the added length to the spar distributes
the loading more evenly over a longer span. I have yet to fold one.
Although, I have the added weight of the longer spar. It is a trade off
worth making I think.

As far as the layup, I used what I had. 1 layer of 3/4 oz. 1 layer of 1.25
oz, 1 layer of 1.25oz? S glass at the tips only to strengthen the tips (see
below). I am not sure what weight my carbon is but i have a whole roll of
it so I am trying to finish it off. It is uni-directional from Hexcell. I
don't care for it too much it tends to split at the tips where there is
little foam core. That is why I have to use the S glass. I use one layer of
the carbon and then two squares where the servos need to be cut out. All
the layers are top and bottom. I paint the top mylar only, white with some
color at the tips. The bottom remains the carbon black. This layup is a
little heavier than freds due to me using what materials I currently have,
but it is overkill in the strength department. when I run out of the Uni, I
plan to purchase some of the carbon from aircraft spruce and modify my layup
to produce a lighter wing.

as far as freds layup, I have inspected some damaged wings from a club
member who cant stay away from chain link fences, and it looks to me like he
uses one layer of light glass top and bottom and one layer of the aircraft
spruce carbon top and bottom. I may be wrong.

I plan to use this same layup but still run my spar the full 30". Also my
dad and I are planning to carve a new fuselage plug with a few modifications
so we can make a mold and make everything ourselves. I still have all of
the original drawings in CAD and all I need to do is make the changes and
print out a full size fuselage profile and carve it out. It will be a good
winter project.

Hope this helps,

Marc Webster

[RCSE] Zagi questions

2000-12-21 Thread Daniel Olin Miller

I just got a Zagi 400, and I have some questions for anyone who cares to
answer them.

1. I have seen in the past a canard plane with ailerons that butted right
up against the winglets, as the Zagi's do. It had a severe adverse yaw
problem. When the aileron deflected down, it had the effect of "blowing"
the inside of the winglet. Does the Zagi have an adverse yaw problem at
all? If not, why not?

2. I love hard candy. But why is there Coffee Crave (with a Zagi
impranteur) in my Zagi 400 kit?

[RCSE] Radio???

Yes the radio is a sailplane radio BUT you have to use a Y harness for
the
flaps :( on the Cockpit MM.
So then you can't adjust each flap independently? I guess
mechanically you could

What would need be done to make it a Mode 1 radio.

I heard that the switches can be changed by moving
plug on circuiit board. Can sticks be moved the
same way for mode 1?

Regarding the original post:

Don't feel bad about passing it along though, hoaxes and Internet
chain-letters have been around since 1988.

Why People Send Chain Letters and Hoax Messages --
Only the original writer knows the real reason, but some possibilities are:
- To see how far a letter will go.
- To harass another person (include an e-mail address and ask
everyone to send mail)
- To bilk money out of people using a pyramid scheme.
- To kill some other chain letter (e.g. Make Money Fast).
- To damage a person's or organization's reputation.
