Re: [RCSE] Re: Report on the breaking of the DS speed record

2001-06-20 Thread Tuffpuppy

Hi Tullio and the rest of RCSE,

The joiner Barry was using was 1/2" square custom made joiner from Doug Boyd
aka the Winch Doc. He is a master machinest and he will CnC mill dang near
anything you need or want!

The molded RnR plane that Barry was flying had a special (very expensive) DS
lay up scheme when it was built. All I know is they used lots of carbon and
doubled the joiner size. The plane is very stout and fast to boot! :-)

I think your best bet is to stick with pylon mounted 3 piece wings. They are
easier to make stronger to withstand the flight loads that DS can produce.

If you are going to continue using 2 piece wings with a joiner then I
recommend you find some joiners that are made of case hardened steel. This
should eliminate the permenant bending you mentioned. Also you might consider
building your planes to allow for 2 joiners instead of one.

If you would like to view a simular model to the one Barry was flying then
visit RnR's website and have a peak at the Millennium.

Well we'd like to know more about the model and its structure, specially the
wing joiner.
We are all discovering that our single and even double 14 x 3 mm steel

Does a picture of the model exist somewhere on the web ? or in Lift Ticket ?
How is the wing built ?

2001-06-20 Thread GordySoar
Well it is looking sunny for this year so no mud this year, but what you will
want is a strong sun screen and some mosquito repelent...the weather prior
has provided some rain and that means a bumper crop of em.

For those of you coming in early, give me a call on where we will be
practicing. I have the channels open to Ron, Rob and Russ, (the powers that
be for this event).

Oh yeah shorts and hats will be a good idea too.

ALL OF THE VOLZ GOODIES ARRIVED TODAY!

Just down from the Holiday Inn is the Red Carpet Inn.  They are advertising
$25 rates and they are 'walk in ' rooms.

I am at the LaQuinta across the street and have a spare room reservation at

2001-06-20 Thread Tom Copp

It is worse than that now. Our server nuked my entire web page. I have a OLD
copy up now so the newest stuff is not there.

I need some help from some of you who might have a copy of some f3x stuff
lurking on your computer.

If you regularly visit the site see if you can find some current pages. Here
is 1 way to do it.

OpenC:
OpenWindows folder
OpenTemporary Internet Files

Click on "Internet address" bar at top to sort files.
See how many http://www.f3x.com/.htm files you have from last week.

Let me know what you have and if you are willing to send them back to me. I
can restore the site from this info.

Please DON"T send anything until after we talk.

Re: [RCSE] DHLG Launching problems

2001-06-20 Thread Larry Pettyjohn

Hay Chris.

Here is some first hand information on DHL and V-Tails. I do not think
that it is a problem with his incidence. I had a Simply the Best
Fuselage and was having the same problem and what I did to decrease this
problem was to program in less down on the V-Tail. In other words, if
you are turning right, the right side is down and the left side is up.
Decrease the amount of down, because as the plane starts to turn right
the down side elevator makes the plane dive. This causes some real
interesting looking launches. Hope this helps.

Quite OK. Now that you mention it, I recall that Martin Road does have

Jim,

When I first began trying DLG, I was having the same problem of the plane
rolling off to the left and ultimately inverting.

My initial attempts at DLG used a throwing stick and a vtail configuration.
The
first thing that I found, due to other's observations, was that I was
"flicking" my wrist at release. I concentrated on keeping my wrist and arm
perfectly straight throughout the throw, sort of like in bowling, and much of
the "roll over" disappeared.

Next, I abandoned the vtail and went with a cruciform tail with about 30% of
the rudder being a sub-rudder. Tail Volume Coefficient (TVC) of the horizontal
fin is around .415.

I have thrown with and without the throwpeg. Without the throwpeg, fingers get
sore, I had to use spyder foam in the wing tips tp prevent crushing, I
couldn't
launch as high, and still the upper wingtip eventually creased at the ends of
my fingertips. With the throwstick, the wingtip doesn't crease, launch is
higher, but if my fingers are wrapped too much around the throwpeg and I am
not
paying attention, I can get a very slight left arc, but no inverted launch.

I too have found that a "half-hearted" attempt at the launch, unlike the
javelin launch, is not good.

Too bad you're in the middle of nowhere, because we've got a HLG contest going
on this coming Saturday in Salt Lake City (750 miles from "anywhere") followed
by an electric fun fly.

I will try to get out and try the 4 items above tonight (weather

I have a Poly V-Tail HLG of my own design. It was designed for the javelin
launch. It launches (javelin) and flies fine. Recently I have tried a few
experimental side-arm type launches "at low power". By low power I simply
mean that I do not rotate fast or try to generate true launch speeds (I
don't think the plane will take it). I am trying these test launches to get
a feel for the new launching technique before I build (or buy) a DHLG ship.
My problem is that on about 1 of every 5 launches the plane rolls over on
launch. No amount of pre-set rudder seems to correct the problem or reduce
its frequency. Living in Montana has some advantages - being near people
who fly sailplanes is not one of them! Any ideas? Suggestions?
