[RCSE] NSP Condor too much nose weight?

2002-01-05 Thread Pete S.

At 30% of MAC I calculated the CG to be 2.9"
behind LE. This has me adding about 11 oz of lead
in the nose to balance. Now this thing
has a great big V-tail and I was hoping
this would allow me to move CG rearward.
Sal says the thing weighs in at 65oz. That's where
I am before balancing. This is my first full house
ship, but 11 oz seems, well, ridiculous.
Anyone have a clue where to start with CG on this
plane.
It is NOT a Slegers Condor, rather more like a
Graphite.
Thanks a bunch,
Pete

[RCSE] New projects

2002-01-05 Thread Rick & Linda Schwemmer

Hey all, I just finished an F4U Corsair from Aerofoam. I took it out last
week and tossed it over the side of a two hundred foot cliff. The winds were
about 20 mph. The Corsair flew well and I had a ball with it.

With the help of my neighbor who is a professional painter, I am finishing
my first 3 meter T/D sailplane. It is a Sapphire from Sal. It is fitted with
multiplex radio gear. It may not be the latest moldie but it sue is gonna
look great. I can't wait to put it on the winch.

Happy New Year, Rick

Re: [RCSE] Flap wiper material

2002-01-05 Thread Simon Van Leeuwen

Role your own. Mix some cabosil or silica with regular (not laminating)
epoxy to the consistancy of, well, twice as thick as molasses. I think
you will understand in a moment how viscous it needs to be.
You need to be able to move the surface enough so as to run some good
quality electical tape along the LE of the control surface that
overhangs. The idea being is that you will build up enough of a layer of
thickened epoxy along the sticky side along the LE of the control
surface, then slide the tape under the TE of the panel and place the
control surface at 45 degrees deflection comapared to main panel.
Then cradle the panel so as the hingeline is horizontal, and gravity
will (slightly) flow out the mixture. It will cure in such a fashion
that when you remove the tape, the wiper will have the appropriate
radius and only the tape thickness as a gap between both surfaces. YOu
may have to vary the width of the electrical tape on really small stuf,
but usually you can have more of the tape up on top of the control
surface (this is good, as you do not want the tape to peel up while the
mixture is setting up). Oh ya, hot glue will work too if can work real
quick. The advantage with this is it remains somewhat pliable.
Of course, this works on any similar control surface.

Jerry,

Believe it or not regular masking tape sticks to those kind of pushrod
housing real well. What you do is to wrap the tape tightly around the tube
wherever you want to glue the tube and then glue to the tape. The glue
sticks good to the outside of the tape.

Again, try GOOP (Marine, Plumbers, Household, etc - they are all the
same according to MSDS), or Shoe GOO, or PFM. Create a small fillet,
submerse the tube apply some over the tube and let dry. Do prevent this
adhesive from sagging, wet your finger and rub lightly to cause it to
skin over.

Years (many) ago I used to use 35mm black and white film developed without
having been exposed. Kind of a hassle but it worked well and usually had a
curve to it from hanging up to dry while weighted at one end. Had an opaque
gray tint to it which looked kind of neat contrasted with some colors of

Drafting mylar works nice for this, comes on a roll so has some curl,
has one shiny side and one matte side (takes pencil marks well) and
is light enough for even HLG gap seals, but strong enough for open
class models. Glue on the matte side, which also happens to curl
the right way (at least on the stuff I have). Really thin two sided tape
works well also. The drafting store calls it transfer tape.

[RCSE] Wire Channels - Methods for cutting/burning

2002-01-05 Thread Rick and Jill

All,

I have wing panels I've been bagging for a slope ship. Have been doing just
ailerons up until now. I want to do flaps and ailerons on the latest set I'm
getting ready to finish.

Previously I have been using a brass tube with the end sharpened and notched
to produce teeth for cutting the wire channels. I've been using a crude
guide, while twisting the rod, to control the location and path of the cut.
This method has worked fine where the servo pockets are relatively close to
the root of the panel, say 4 or 5 inches.

Now I have a need to go out about 15 inches for the aileron cavities.
Haven't tried the above mentioned method but feel I need some better
approach for the aileron runs. The panels are semi thin, about 1/2" so I
need to control the channel location so not to runout on the top or bottom
surface before getting to the servo cavity. Also need to hit the cavity
somewhat accurately in the chordwise direction too.

I would rather not cut open the bottom surface of the wing to run wire, and
then have to patch it. I've seen very nice, accurate channels cut/burned in
bought stuff. Now how do they do it???

Anyone have a slick way of accurately cutting or burning channels in
pre-bagged panels??

Thanks for any advice,
RB

Greg. . .the 1" wide, curved slats found on those plastic window blinds work
well. Cut a strip about 3/8" wide along a machined edge and bend it slightly
along its center line over the edge of an aluminum L extrusion. Slit between
the skin and the core to "spot weld" it in with thin CA, or if hollow,
figure out how to similarly attach it under the skin. If you like, spray
paint the strips first to match the color.

Ok, just 'cause everybody is so bummed out and all, and yes, it has nothing at all to

amusing articles "hidden" away on my website. They're not linked to anything so if you
want to find any of them again you'll have to
bookmark them.

A column by Russer Baker in the NYT from '92 about (among other things) "Death by
Carpeting" (:-)

Since the subject of blimps is "in the air", some blimp pictures from Atlanta on Jan
3, 2000.
http://www.airdyn.com/misc/atlanta.htm
These are from Flight Brothers and cost about $20K each.

"How to Talk like a Lawyer" (:-) (with apologies to Tom Nagel and others)
http://www.airdyn.com/misc/lawyers.htm

Some "election" pictures:
http://www.airdyn.com/misc/fla.htm

"I Wish I Were in Love Again" (1951, Rodgers & Hart, Frank Sinatra)
It's a well-known song that many of you have heard lots and lots of times. However,
what I think is funny is that most people "hear"
it, but practically none listen carefully enough to catch the quite-funny lyrics like:
"When love congeals it soon reveals /
The faint aroma of performing seals"
Yes, these lines are really in there, and yes, the song is on the "Best of Sinatra"
compilation that some of you received for
Christmas about 10 years ago and haven't listened to since then. Dig it out and listen
for yourself (:-)
http://www.airdyn.com/misc/sinatra.htm

Oh, heck, why not, there's no reason not to take your fun whenever possible, and even
"404 - Not Found" messages can be fun. See:

Cheers,
Gabe

Unfortunately, Sal's departure brought to mind the old adage about "all it takes for
evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing"
and while it certainly seemed to me at the time that no defense of Sal or anybody else
was required, and in fact it seemed like it
would just draw even more unfortunate attention to the whole saga, a few more posts
with GET A LIFE! as the subject and the like
and/or a couple of private notes of support to Sal might have been useful to express
the general note.

Cheers,

from my mistakes and not repeat them (more once

try to fix it at my expense, as soon as possible, and so far I've been able to placate

[RCSE] PIGGYBACK setup

2002-01-05 Thread gabe baltaian

"Brian Joder - OUTBOUND Ind." wrote:

> Here is a site that has a ready made piggyback setup
> to launch gliders
>
> http://www.nyblimp.com/

Umm Thanks Brian, but it's actually not ready-made. However there are fairly
complete instructions and pictures so you can build
one yourself. The concept is really simple and it could be easily modified for use on
a Twinstar or other launchers where you may
not want to drill holes in the wings. I might make up one of these for use with a TS
later this spring but I have no idea when I'll
get around to it.

Anyway, the rig works really well and by attaching the planes at the CG it makes a lot
of stuff simpler but all the advantages are
outlined on the page and I won't go into it here.

The only hold-up is that the Vortac bomb releases are not available anymore. If you're
interested run to your hobby shop and look in
the dusty shelves in the back of the store to see if he has any hidden back there. (If
he does also buy up any spare release clips
available.)

The other alternative is Yellow Aircraft (they make large FG IC jets). They have 2
releases, one the size of the Vortac one and the
other one almost twice as large. However, while the small one is the same principle /
layout / etc as the V, it's also a teeny bit
longer so the parts won't interchange. Worse, when YA made the molds, they didn't make
them so as to have extra release clips
available, so if you break your release clip pins you have to buy a whole new release.
The clips don't really break all that often
and the price is still pretty low but the sheer wastefulness of having to do this
would bug me .

I like weird / interesting aircraft. If anybody really wants to make one of these and
has a subject that might tickle my funny bone
I happen to have a few Vortacs set aside and may be talked into parting with one or
two of them. (Please note that these are not a
stock sale item, these are my own private stock, and you'd really have to "sell" me
into parting with them.)

Please let me know if you have any questions about the release.
Cheers,
Gabe

Re: [RCSE] F3B Why? (Soaring related)

2002-01-05 Thread mikel

The Eagle was a nice model in it's day. The basic design is the same
vintage as the Ellipse 1T. Fortunately for Joe and Daryl, they were
better at setting up the model and Joes understanding of launch
mechanics was better than the Europeans. The Ellipse 2V is probably a
better model. By that time, Joe was flying modified Eagles that had some
tip extensions to improve distance performance.

Now you have awesome launches that don't look as awesome because of the
bigger models and 14 second speed runs that don't look fast because of
the bigger models. With no lift, the Eagle could easily do 16, 17 laps
in distance. Ellipse 1T's could do 16, 2V's could do 17, Cobras (now
old technology) could do 18. Current models are in the 19-20 range.
>From what I have heard about the last WC site, it really didn't
demonstrate some of the speeds and laps that the new models are capable
of doing. It was a large, cool patch of green surrounded by brown.
Kind of kills lift closer to the launch area.

The RG15 still works pretty well. Especially for less experienced
pilots. If you screw up your attitude in speed with an MH32 model, or a
HQ/W model and have to push down elevator, you can watch the drag go up
and see the model really slow down. The RG15 was more tolerant of those
kind of mistakes.

The extra $$$ comes from building all carbon models. Lightweight carbon
cloth is expensive. It you could get lighter carbon cloth for the
skins, the models could be even lighter, but who knows what they could
cost then. Wing stiffness in bending and torsion does make a difference
on launch and in flight.

Count me in Tom! You guys put on a great event! Can you promise the same
wind we had in 2000? Please? What a time.

I believe that it was a bit thickened eppler 205.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what airfoil the Sig Riser 100 has?

Thanks
