Re: [RCSE] Re: AMA and slope combat

2002-06-13 Thread Herb Smith

First a little background.

I flew control line in the 60's and then powered RC in the early 70s.
I got out because I was tired of fighting radio problems, fixing
airplanes and flipping cranky engines.

After watching some foamie combat about a year and a half ago I got
back into RC with an EPP combat wing. They bounce and are as close to
indestructible a plane can get. Since then my hanger has added other
foamie and crunchie gliders, even a couple eflight models. Guess I'm
back into the hobby.

I joined the AMA earlier this year so I could fly in contests with my
new Photon DLG. It's very durable and a lots of fun to fly. My
flying are improving and I'm developing new thermalling and launch
skills. So foamie combat got me back into RC, and then into the AMA.
I wonder how many more there are like "me"?

I agree with the majority of what Mike Garcon wrote regarding his
"reasonable guidelines" for foamie combat, but there is one specific
part I don't agree with as written and wish to propose an alternative.
I have from Mike's email as indicated.

On Wed, 12 Jun 2002 14:52:55 -0500, Mike Garcon <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
wrote the following:

DISAGREE

This rule would outlaw foamie combat at some of the better places.
Lets see, places I've flown in So. Cal., Parker in Acton, Snake Hill
in Los Virgenes and Grant Park in Ventura. Every place I have flown
(slope) foamie combat the action seems to be right in front of the
pilot. Don't know how to get off to the side, especially in combat.
These places may not be contest or club flying sites, but nevertheless
are indicative of better slope flying sites.

If we need to go to extremes to preserve (slope) foamie combat,
perhaps compromise is in order. Uniform of the day for Foamie Slope
Combat, goggles and bike helmets for liability management.

This is assuming that protection is needed for slope foamie combat
liability management. I have been hit by an errant foamie slope
plane, and although it may startle or sting, it didn't hurt. I
personally don't believe protection is needed, but law makers need
options.

I don't think this would be a financial impact. If you had to buy the
gear from scratch it shouldn't set anyone back more than $50, and I
would venture a guess most people already have a bike helmet.

Notice I introduced slope (un-powered) into the definition 4
paragraphs back. I am not reviewing powered combat.

>4. Combat planes can not have exposed sharp linkages or control surfaces.

AGREE

>I realize the natural tendency is to stand on the lip and fly directly in

See # 3 disagree - compromise, helmets and goggles for liability
management.

Mirko was the guy who got me going in the hobby in general... he rescued me from a fate of caster oil and noise.  He tricked me into going to the slope with my 'glider' on Lake Michigan, the rest is history ;-)

Mirko may have been one of the first sailplaners to be flying 6 servo, 3 and 5meter planes on the slope in America, certainly in the midwest.  Euro Scaletrash, but still flapped, spoiled, pivot winged, and aileroned.  Heck he a  slope rocket that popped up the canopy for a speed brake!..

Mirko knows theres nothing like a good slope cluttered with pretty glass:-)

[RCSE] More on that 'old' FMA Extreme RX

2002-06-13 Thread GordySoar
This from Fred Marks of FMA.

The most extreme test ( No pun intended!)  reported of this parameter was
reported by Mike Lee in his RCM column in which he reported that he
deliberately flew the Extreme right down the flight line about six feet up
to check adjacent channel and third order performance.  Other than threats
against his life if he did it again, Extreme 5 had no problem whatsoever.
of course, we knew that when we qualified the receiver a couple of years
back.  I don't know how many thousands we have in the field right now, but
we have never had a single report of interference with the X5.  This is
reflected in the fact that all serious electric flyers now use the Extreme 5
and replace all the GWS/Feather/JR whatevers with Extreme 5.  X5 performance
has led to the suggestion that all NEAT Fair participants should plan to fly
dual conversion in Sept!    Wehave one other unsolicited report from Keith
Shaw that surfaced at Toledo.  Seems that Keith and members of the Freq
committee were running tests to see how close fields (Or unknown park
flyers) could operate to each other (on the same freq).   An Extreme 5 was
flown to max visible altitude; a second transmitter was turned on on the
same freq, but with the antenna half way collapsed.  Extrem 5 flew as if no
interferer was present.  Yet, when the primary transmitter was turned off,
the XMTR with collapsed antenna had perfect control.  Howzat

Thanks for the discussion, guys. With all this
interest, I should be able to take a collection for
the shipping, right? ;-)

The E-5's range doesn't seem very different than the
JR R700 or a 555. I'm not sure that I've ever tried
to check farther than 100' with those. And, I've been
flying a zagi far, far away recently with the 555 and
this tx.

The XF631 manual calls for a collapsed ant. distance
of 75 to 100 feet. It was Fred's notes(a "little"
more detailed than JR's, btw) that me think something
might be wrong.

If FMA is really interested in testing, I'd be willing
to participate in the experiment.

[RCSE] Re: The Moth! - Initial Flight Impressions...

2002-06-13 Thread NCFM

Greetings Joe...

Gracious thanks for the maiden flight update and
happy "shared" thoughts!  It is much appreciated! On the CG, our
stated 1-1/4" back from the LE is an excellent starting point, albeit a tad
conservative, since we don't know how much LE's will be rounded or not rounded,
etc.  In your comments, I wasn't sure if you were adding 1/4oz fore or aft
of the CG; if it was fore, you might be a smidgen nose heavy now.  For the
most part, 1-5/16" back from the LE usually ends up being the sweet spot
for the Moth, where it will snap a turn bigtime without quivering, and still fly
inverted will a micro-amount of forward stick (about 1/8" with avg
throws).Since "dive testing" is near useless on a flying wing, I
typically use inverted flight and turning characteristics to help dial it
in...Many thanks again Joe and please let me know if the winds tomorrow
materialize and you have a chance to really see the top end
speeds!!!:)Always happy

Subject: The Moth! - Initial Flight
  Impressions...(Probably Too Long)
Fellow Slopeheads...Well for those of you in the
Nashville area there is good news.  Effective today 6/13/02 the east
side (The Notch) of Percy Priest Dam is again open. With winds forcasted
to be shifting to the west throughout the day I was working on my new
slope ship "The Moth" until late last nite to take advantage of being able
to fly one of my favorite spots. The Moth, from North Country Flying
Machines, looks alot like the JW by Bowman Hobbies but was advertised as
being a good light wind slope ship and a howler when ballasted up so for
65.95 delivered to my door I figured I'd give it a try.  If you have
built a foamie before it is pretty straight forward.  Very complete
kit as far a hardware goes.  Carbon tube spars with basswood caps in
the wings and a carbon longeron in the fuse and a balsa tail.  I
tried a new technique on the fuse that proved to work out very well, okay
at least so far.  I used 2 coats brushed on coats of Plasti-Dip (The
stuff used to dip tool handles in to give a rubbery plastic finish). The
wings were covered with ultacoat after the messy 3M spray had dried.
Flight pack was a pair of HS80's (they recommend HS-85's but the 80's were
sitting on the bench and needed a home), an FMA Fortress Rx and a 600 mAh
NMH battery pack.  Took about 5 hours total to build, not counting
drying time for the epoxy, goop, and Plasti-Dip. I set the balance at the
recommended 1 1/4" back from the LE and the total weight came out just
over 18 oz.Winds at the dam were blowing from 260 at about 6 to 10
when I made my first toss.  Wow dipping down pretty hard, dialed in
some up trim and leveled out for a nice 5 minute first flight.
Landed and took out 1/4 oz. of lead and launched again, it still wanted
those couple of clicks of up and was a little more unstable than before
but still very flyable.  So landed and put the 1/4 oz. plus another
1/4 oz just to see what would happen.  It still wants a couple of
degrees reflex on the TE but very stable and a real joy to fly now.
Another slope junkie showed up with his DAW 126 HLG and we were having
some fun.  The winds were pretty variable with some good thermals
busting off from time to time and this little ship will hook a thermal and
ride it out with no problem. So if you are looking for a good light
wind slope ship that I'm betting will honk in good winds (forecast for
tomorrow is for WNW at 10-15 which is perfect "Notch" conditions) and I'll
find that out tomorrow, you need to consider getting one of these.
For $66 delivered to your door in the US you can't go wrong.  And no
I'm not getting paid for this but Derick if you wanna send me a beta ship
to test for you, just put it in the mail you have my address!Visit

It is my understanding that the AMA is about to debate the full contact
:-) r/c combat. I suspect, owing to the scarcity of suitable slope sites
in the east, that you have not personally observed this popular r/c
activity. You should understand, that slope combat is unique in
attracting new young modelers (scale too) to r/c. While you may not have
resources to personally observe one these get-to-gathers (formal or
informal), please at least watch videos of this activity. Specifically
"Endless Lift 2" http://radiocarbonart.com/Pages/el2main.html. I would
be happy to lend you my copy.
If you have not personally observed EPP (foam) Scale Combat, please, at
least, abstain from this unwarranted (as far as gliders) debate.

Thanks for the help with my new radio. The programming articles I received from
Sherman Knight and Andrew Mileski were extremely helpful. There is no way in hell I
could have done this stuff out w/o them. To me the JR manual just isnt that clear.
The 8103 is a bit more complicated than the Vision I have been using for sailplanes,
but seems to have more flexability also. Now to tackle the heli programming, wish me
luck! Thanks again, Walter
