[RCSE] Re: rcsd free sample pdf

2004-02-28 Thread MSu1049321
I'm only able to see a few pages before my dialup connection times out and I
lose it. Trying to download it first, it similarly chokes, and becomes
unopenable. Could somebody witha DSL connection shoot me the .pdf attached to a
one-word e-mail? TIA.

Re: [RCSE] Bottom hinged, top actuated flaps, Why?

2004-02-28 Thread Y C Lui

I think the prime reason of using top actuated arrangement is to reduce the amount of protrusion on the wing surface and hence cut down the drag . On my Pike WR, the end of the control horn for the flap is flush with the top surface of the wing. The length of the control horn is equal to the thickness of the front part of the flap so the entire horn can be buried inside the wing. I can show some photos if you are interested.
With bottom actuated arrangement, there are bound to be some protrusion unless the control horn has zero length.

[RCSE] Coverite 21st Century Fabric

2004-02-28 Thread Ed Jett
Anyone have a small piece of white coverite 21st century fabric to use for a
repair? I'll pay the postage. 8-1/2" by 11" is plenty. I can use an even
smaller piece if your remnant isn't that large.

Thanks in Advance,

Re: [RCSE] Bottom hinged, top actuated flaps, Why?

2004-02-28 Thread Harley Michaelis
Steve. . .if less drag is the reason bottom hinged flaps are top actuated,
it makes a case for using the Rotary Driver System, as Bob Pope says, if
possible. The RDS for flaps works perfectly if bottom hinged and. . . .
nothing hangs out at all to cut drag.

The flap servos, however, do have to be oriented at 45 degrees to the
hingeline and if servo wells are molded in for use with traditional linkage
of a horn and pushrod, then the RDS can't be used without some innovation.

A source for info on the RDS is in the RDS website
www.proptwisters.org/rds2/ . However, since I put that together, I have also
created the GENIE CD which has even better material on it than the website.
The GENIE CD is $5 postpaid in the US and $7 outside the US. It is a huge
resource for various practical, modeler-related things I've picked up over
35 years in R/C. 26 S. Roosevelt, Walla Walla, WA. 99362

Bill has it exactly right. Electronic format would be my preferred choice,
too.

Searchable digest of past years: If this idea has traction, then remember to
use Acrobat's feature "Acrobat Catalog" to create a full-text index of the
entire document collection. Options are available for Case Sensitive, Sounds
Like, and Word Stemming. See the file Acrohelp.pdf for details.

Alas, you cannot copy a picture of Gordy out of an Acrobat file for digital
manipulation. For that, publishing to HTML via RoboHelp or using a standard
HTML building environment like DreamWeaver plus a web search engine tool is
required. I mention RoboHelp because it can build the HTML and the indexes
automatically.

Is there a website with an illustration of a four servo wing (two ailerons

I've decided to try and make my own.

Simply go to and
you'll be able to directly download a PDF version of the January 2004
issue of RCSD from a link on that page.

The PDF file is just 1053K in size, so even if you're on a 28.8/56K
dial-up account, like we are, the download time should be just a few minutes.

This PDF issue contains seven articles, one of which is sure to pique your
interest. As an added bonus, there's color photography, not available in
the printed version.

If you enjoy this free, full color, PDF version of RCSD, the articles, and
the ability to download it on-line, drop a quick line to the RCSD folks at

You print off only the articles you desire and bind them in any manner you
wish. Even with the very best of monthly publications, I don't necessarily
want to keep the whole thing. After a couple of years of saving mags, you
end up with large pile of paper 75% or more of which is of no long term
interest. You can save the PDF files on a CD and still have access to
EVERYTHING.

For the record, having a huge pile of ALL the past issues of RCSD is
absolutely nothing that turns me on. I'd be willing to pay fair value for
a complete set of all back issues on CD in PDF format. Think how fast you
could search for a specific article or general topics. Think of getting
data and graphs and just storing them in a manner relevant to your specific
needs. Think how much fun it would be getting your hands on digital pics
of Gordy and working them over with Photoshop! ;-)

And I have every issue ever printed. I could care less about
photographs. Let me have drawings, graphs, and real data. Pictures are
just eye candy and tell me nothing. Let me have the engineering data.
Yep. I like real data too, AND the convenience of storing it
efficiently. What data are you wishing that is not in the .PDF format RCSD
that is in the hard copy???

It might be nice to have the option of hard copy or .PDF. After all,
variety is the spice of life. We don't ALL like skegs now do we (running
for my NOMEX undies)? ;-)
