Re: [RCSE] What Happened to JR 9303 Radio?
Mike, I was not at Visalia, but I too remember a post by John Diniz stating he had a radio he was giving away to whoever took 100th place not who won a fly-off of the middle of the pack flyers. Seems Terry may have a beef with the organizers for changing up the rules in mid stream. Can't really fault John here since it sounds like a radio was given away to Shawn. [RCSE] Perkins needs help...Yea I know... but really
He needs the help of one of yous guys who know how to build Skeeters. Fancy that! (Gordy can step forward here)(but he won't) Seems that many years ago, when most of us learned the gentle art of Monocoating or dope and tissueSomehow, DP missed that class. Actually Joe was the one who showed DP how to monocoat. Now Bozo is not going out on a limb here and cast dispersions about Joes skill with a monocoat iron but... Lets just say his skills with the MC iron were on a par with his skills in soldering. I don¹t think CA is a good substitute for solder...but hey...I'm Bozo what do I know? Back to DP's problem... Bad Monocoating. Seems Dayrl has turned his stab into a molten mess. To be totally fair he reports that he was able to get each and every wrinkle out. Hummm. Will one of you guys give the guy a hand? [RCSE] Bird attacks
Ok, not strictly involving sailplanes, but still, some amazing gliding (and flapping) flight: This morning in cloudy light rain and high winds, I watched out my window here in Seattle the following scene: an extremely tightly bunched flock of smallish black birds (grackles?... something a good bit smaller than crows, and quite fast) perhaps 50-60 of them in a sort of big elastic 'sphere'. They were flying amazingly tight formation and veering and changing direction with incredible speed and unity... then I noticed that the reason for their tight-formation semi-aerobatics was that they were, as a group, harassing a red tailed hawk. I've seen one, two three and four birds all teaming up to give a raptor a hard time, but 60??? And they weren't doing the 'taking turns diving on the hawk' thing... they were acting as a single attacking mass... it was incredible to watch. Totally a new one on me, and just fascinating. The hawk was clearly losing, and really trying pretty hard, it seemed, to just get AWAY. I watched, riveted, until they went out of my field of view. Then an hour later I was talking on the phone, and happened to look out the window, and saw the whole show repeated AGAIN, only this time it was a bald eagle they were ganging up on. A half hour later, I saw it again, with the same or perhaps a different eagle. It was as if they formed a new sport, designated the neighborhood that slopes above Gasworks Park as the playing field, and scheduled three games in a row for Saturday morning. I've been watching birds for what I thought was a long time, but I've decided to quit thinking I won't regularly see something new. [RCSE] East Coast HLG Festival 2004
There is still a little time left to send in your registration for our fall HLG festival in Wilson, North Carolina on October 22-23-24. I just posted the tasks that we will be using. Please take a look here http://olgol.com/contest/tasks.html We are approximately at 20 pilots now and we sure could use a lot more participants. The current list of pilots is also on the web-site http://olgol.com/contest/pilots.html Rick Walba just sent me 3 tailbooms for the raffle! Thank you Rick. We will have a very respectable pilots' raffle this year. A big thanks to all our sponsors: Denny Maize and Phil Barnes, JR Horizon, and Rick Walba. We plan to have foamy races after the contest flying on Saturday, not to mention a whole day of cross-country, fun flying, and "Wilson Cup" on Friday. It is going to be a great event and you could be there too if you sent your registration today. Oleg. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Buzzards flew with me
Back in 1975, I was flying the LSF Level 4 thermal flight when a flock of buzzards joined up with my sailplane. I was flying my Tern 4 which had a very weak wing so when the hour was up, I searched out some sink to circle in while descending. A long string of about 30 buzzards came by and the leader joined up with me. He made one circle before continuing on his original course. The end of the line of buzzards had not reached the circle when the leader broke off but all the buzzards made a complete circle before resuming the course. I could imagine the leader thinking "What a stupid bird! Circling in sink!" Chuck Anderson RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] I've piggybacked on hawks/buzzards many a time, but last week I had one piggy back on me.
I had just cored a thermal about about 500-750' when a hawk, who was flying on a straight line to where I was, started a thermal turn under me and circled the same direction as I was turning but stayed under me. He made 4-5 turns and then took off on the same line that he was previously on. I guess he didn't think my lift was good enough or the size of my Grand Esprit scared him off. Re: [RCSE] Bird attacks vs. airplane color
The only plane I have had attacked in the air was the Infamous Flamingoid, which is pink. I was doing a half hour thermal flight, and a couple of buzzards, of all things, took offense at the presence of a Flamingoid in their air and made repeated swoops at it. I did loops and stalls, and they eventually left. I got the half hour. And for what it's worth, the same pink Flamingoid has been attacked several times on the ground by RC sailplane pilots. Go figure. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] shipping
I gave up on UPS several years ago, damage rate was extremely high and their claims department must be on a commission based on claims money not paid. I use Fed Ex Ground Service because it costs less and damage to my kit boxes is basically NONE. I have seen foot prints on boxes shipped by UPS. The difference in DAMAGE RATE is ATTITUDE. The Postal Service is on the same par as UPS, high prices, damaged shipments and poor claims payment. I can't understand why so many ebay sellers use the US Postal Service to ship boxes. RE: [RCSE] shipping
I concur: After using UPS exclusively for a few years, I now use FED EX ground almost exclusively for what I call small stuff, and FED EX express saver for larger sailplanes that don't require me to use airfreight service. What I have found in shipping via any shipper is that the human on the customer service end to a large part, determines the rate you pay. This is somewhat true with FED EX in my experience, and especially true with airfreight where I save up to $100.00 dollars per shipment because the freight agent likes me and takes off all the bogus "extras" that I could be paying. I always ask for a quote before shipping at either place or a written copy of the transaction.
