Re: [RCSE] What is the best R/C soaring related competition...
Three or so years ago I traveled from Seattle to Visalia just to fly in a DLG fun fly on the first evening. I doubt that I will ever attend another NATS now that they are held so far away from the West Coast. I remember back when the LSF used to hold West coast contests in Santa Rosa CA and other locations. We even had a regional LSF contest in Seattle at the SASS field at 60 Acres South. I also traveled to Queen Creek Arizona in 200o to get the Old Buzzard's signature on my Sunbird Wing. I will probably remain a level 4 LSF (#557) forever unless I get really lucky in a bunch of bigger than normal West Coast contests. On the other hand, I have the memories of great West Coast contests in Vernon BC, Seattle, Salem, Santa Rosa, Richland, Spokane, etc. I remember the First year that Col. Thacker entered his Baby Bollis in Scale in California. I also remember him riding a bike around the pit area and having at least 4 changes of clothes during the day. I now live in Port Angeles, WA and have 5 parks I can fly my DLG within 2 miles of my house. No one I know within 30 miles of here even knows what a DLG is. Well, not exactly, Marc Mech is in the Bellingham area which is less than that by boat but a really long way by car. Harley Michaelis, Scobie Puchtler, Phil Pearson, Adam Weston, Tim Johnson, Sherman Knight, Bill Kuhlman, Dave Beardsley, Russ Young and many others from Washington State are well known on the Left Coast but do not seem to find Indiana in the summertime worth the effort. -- Dick Barker Port Angeles, WA - Turning HLG Around - Content-Type: text/html; charset="UTF-8" Content-Language: en In a message dated 8/3/2005 2:24:51 PM Pacific Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: >From people's experience and unbiased opinions?, what would be the best >organized competitions, meets, or fun flys have they encountered? Jo, When Rob Glover asked me if we should invite you to join our F3J crew at the NATS, I must admit to some apprehension. I knew that none of us were at the same level as you and I was worried that we might somehow cause you to be distracted from an outstanding performance. I was dead WRONG! You took us under your wing from the first meeting. Patiently helping us measure the line, install the condoms, tie the knots, supervise the equipment setup and keep the line cool. During the contest, you nurtured us to our best performances ever. It was amazing to see you fly great rounds from launches provided by towers who had never done it before. [RCSE] Nats Thanks
I tried posting this earlier, but yahoo ate it. So here is redone version with some changes based on recent discussions here. Hi all, Just wanted to publicly thank the LSF and AMA for putting on another great NATS. This is a monumental task and the LSF does a fantastic job of making it look easy. I'm not sure how many of you really understand the challenges of successfully holding such an event. The format that the LSF has evolved over the years is really something special. While some may argue there should be x number of days of this event and y number of days of another event, there are some valid points and everyone is entitled to their opinion. I wouldn't mind seeing some changes in this regard as well, but that is not what I'm talking about here. The man on man format with open entry is a truly fantastic balance of addressing the needs of the social/novice flyer as well as the seasoned competitor. There are some aspects that may seem harsh to the novice or sportflyer (no pop offs - only "low launches"), but this is a necessity for a contest of this size and will surely encourage people to fix any pop off problems they may have for future NATS. Then there is the staggered launching. The seasoned competitor would prefer a mass launch, but for the novice or sportflyer, the staggered launch is appreciated. One of the subtle things I really appreciate about the winch crew is the understanding they have of who is launching and how hard to push them. If the person is new or nervous or has a health issue, they will give them a few extra seconds to launch. I'm sure they miss a few, but on the whole they do their best to minimize the pressure put on the contestants. What I really like about the winch crew is their persistence and even tone regardless of what happens with the previous launch. Regardless of a pop off, folded wing, pop in, once the line is clear you'll here "Launch 8" or what ever is the next winch. So thanks guys, you do a great job! (Stumper, JT, Jack, Martin, Steve, et al) Then there is the Event director and the CD's. I am always impressed at the effort and thought that goes into the event before it even starts. Us competitive glider guys can be a squirrelly bunch and it takes a lot of effort to think of all the goofy things we might do to screw up a contest. So my hats off to you guys for all the careful planning and clarifications to minimize any potential conflicts. The landing task and setup was probably one of the best/safest of any NATS I've been to. Hope to see it again next year. The CD's also did an excellent job of calling the tasks for the conditions. It is not easy to balance calling challenging times and keeping the contest moving. Thanks Marc, Ed, Phil, Jack, and Mark for a great week! The impound this year was the best I've seen it. There were no shoot downs due to left on TX's. Tom Broeski's trays made things go super smooth and quick. Thanks Tom, that was a great idea. One of the things I really appreciate is that the impound and the CD make it almost impossible for you to miss a round. In the heat it is really easy to lose track of time and potentially miss your group. Missing your group can really screw up your day. Thanks Marna and crew for doing a great job it is much appreciated. The scoring at the NATS is yet another amazing thing. Robin Meek and his crew do an incredible job. I really appreciate the time they take to make sure there are no errors. For example, one round in HL I only turned in three times out of a possible four. Robin personally tracked me down to make sure this was correct. I had landed out one flight and indeed had only posted 3 scores, but it is nice to see the score keepers being attentive and taking the time to make sure there are no honest mistakes being made. There is little worse than being knocked out of a contest due to a simple record keeping error. So thanks Robin and crew, your efforts are appreciated and don't go unnoticed. What impressed me most this year was Sheldon, Sara, and the turnaround crew. The kids do a fantastic job of bringing the lines back. Sheldon does an amazing job of keeping a dozen or so kids happy and working. During the 2 meter days was especially impressive. The temperature was in the upper 90's and felt like well over 100 - yet Sheldon and the kids kept the lines coming back without complaint. Really impressive - Thanks guys! Just some final thoughts. A contest is what you make it. If your a sportflyer and not into contests, you can still go to the NATS and have fun. There is plenty of time to look at new/different models and talk to people from around the country. If your new to contest flying, the NATS are a great place to learn. This is one of the things I like about the open format. It offers the opportunity for people to meet and talk to some of the best in the country. Pre-qualifying should be left for Team Selectio

Al, I just ended 12 days in Muncie at the NATS. That is 12 days of competitive sailplane flying that included 13 events requiring 9 different models. Where else in the world can you do so much diversified flying in such a short time. Great flying, great people, great organization, great accommodations, good restaurants, challenging weather and an occasional piece of wood. Most events were MOM which means you only have to do better than the 9 guys standing next to you. What more could you ask for? Visalia is great and I would not miss it. [RCSE] A visit to the Electric NATS
On August 1 & 2, after a week at the LSF/AMA NATS, I returned to Muncie. My reasons for returning were my own curiosity about the electric events and my wife's curiosity about Muncie's finer eateries. This post concerns the former. First off, attendance at electric is considerably smaller than that of R/C soaring. For example, one event had 8 entrants, smaller than some of soaring's flight groups. The events are thermal oriented and they do have classes by aircraft type ("Old Timer" for example) and power. I observed the "Texaco" fly-off, held Monday evening and found it most interesting. The 3 best flyers from earlier rounds launched simultaneously and proceeded to fly an "all up last down" round. As one could run the motor as long as one desired, this became an "energy management" game. The winner had a 32:30 flight. The next morning, I watched and helped time a "battery allocation" event. There was a limit on cell size but that's all - any e-powered plane could compete. The task was to fly three rounds (12, 15, and 20 minutes max time) with only one charge. During each round, the motor may be used as much as desired. This was truly an energy management and find lift event. In their events, they do use a simple landing tape with values of 10 and 20 points. However, measurements are made to the nearest part of the plane - not the nose to which we're accustomed. There were a variety of planes including an electric AVA. I did inquire about the possibility of an F5J event next year and was told interest would be the determining factor. RE: [RCSE] Arizona - Neat Places
John, Your are right about the 'bone yard', while I was stationed at DMAFB in the late 50's, we use earn extra money stripping copper out of old acft and other usable items, on my arrival date in 1956, just behind the guard shack at the then entrance, sat the 'Enoa Gay'. One of my duties as an acft records clerk was to log out of service certain USAF acft that was going into the bone yard for the 43rd Bomb Wing, (B-47) one I will remember was the first B-36, tail #036, had sat in one of wing sqd. areas for about 3 weeks, then one day they started it up, taxied out on to the runway, our bomb wing maintance officer came into our office and said, you guys watch that B-36, it is making its last flight as a milatary aircraft. It took off, made two patterns around DM, landed and taxied to the bone yard. An hour or so later the crew chief brought the maintenance records into our office as directed. I retired the paper of the first B-36. That was in 1958, a little later I was transferred to Camp Cooke, CA, now known as Vandenberg AFB. [RCSE] Who's Flying What...at the F3B Worlds
This just in from Phil Renaud on who's flying what at the F3B Worlds Steve: The US Team is flying Estrellas as the primary aircraft. Joe also has a Crossfire and a Europhia but has elected to fly the Estrella for the entire contests. The Estrella is the most popular airplane followed by the Crossfire, Carracho 3000 and a few Europhia's and Race Machines. The Swiss team and the current World Champ (Andreas Boland) are flying Crossfires. Hard to tell the difference in performance between the airplanes. They all have the plus and minuses depending on wind, heavy vs light lift, humidity, etc. Its a pretty tough contest. We are in a three way battle for 2, 3, and 4th place with the Swedes, US, and Austrians. Looks like the Germans have a lock on first place as a team and Andreas Boland from Switzerland is likely to repeat as World Champ. With throw outs the US team will end up doing fairly well in thermal duration and distance but we couldn't buy a speed run. We are planning to fly until about 9:00 PM tonight to finish up Round 6 Duration and Speed. We will then fly Round 6 Distance tomorrow to wrap up the contest. The weather forecast for tomorrow is heavy rain so we may have to finish up on Saturday. If we don't complete round 6 the scores will revert to Round 5 with no throwouts and the US Team would finish in 4th place. [RCSE] Re: Nats or why Jojo choose Nats..
Since my name came up I guess I will have to say a few words. I have never been to Visalia and who knows I might go one day. But what really triggered me for Nats (other than lots of friends backing up) is that it is: ---National Championship Soaring--- To me a National championship means that the best of the best is there and all others that likes to fly competition (and thereby be better at it). Those that were not there was held up by some way. Those will not be a National champion. Just like those that can not attend to the trials can not be world champion Also I had the chance to fly 4 competitions in a row on one trip. This is rather unique!!! I agree that it might have been strange if I won it. But I did not. There are so many good pilots in USA that wanted to beat me that I did not have a chance. Big funfly's and gathering I attend lots of times. I even have a funfly on the ice back home that I help arrange with 100+ pilots. But still nothing comes up to ---National Championship Soaring--- I know now that Nationals have a differrent meaning in the USA than we in Europe see it as. But still I feel that those I met in Muncie was people that liked the fact that they had to do an effort to get higher up that list. Yes even Daryl and Tom had to take out the very best of themselves (just two examples). To me a competition is the most important of all. At the same time I LOVE to share time with friends and NEW friends (which I got a lot of). A big hug from Norway PS there are room for both Nats and Visalia... and possibly a few more ;-) Hilsen (Regards) Jojo www.grini.no -- Date: Wed, 03 Aug 2005 21:02:02 -0400 From: John Derstine <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: 'Marc Gellart' <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, 'Steve Meyer' <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, 'TJB' <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, soaring@airage.com Subject: RE: RE: [RCSE] National Fun Fly Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Marc and others: 150 registered, my error, but I did put a question mark after my number... it was a question. How many showed up? Counting multiple entries is like having dead people vote in a Chicago election, 150 is 150. :-) Anyway regardless of semantics, the numbers for NAT soaring attendance in no way reflects the potential pool of soaring pilots, my point. Also not to be misinterpreted, I love the fact that there is a NATs, that people do in fact work hard to produce it, and contest flying is a good thing if you enjoy it. What I see is the potential for a paradigm shift in the way we look at the NATS. As I guessed, many will object to any notion of change, it's human nature, it makes us uncomfortable, but looking at ways to boost all R/C soaring, not just the 80 pilots who fly TD at the NATs, is what I am talking about. I personally feel, and it is just my opinion, that there is room for several kinds of "events" at the NATS drawing more to the venue all at once. Letting them see first hand the competition, who knows some fun flyer guys or spectators might want to play TD or F3b. It's all about numbers, exposure and having an inclusive outlook, not an exclusive one. How to balance the so called fun flying or semi competitive events with the competition. Good question I guess. What is the goal or mission statement for the NATS? Is there one? I placed second in scale soaring at the NATS in 1999. Does it have any real significance? It is a nifty pc of wood, but since I was one of 5 pilots competing, it hardly has relevance to my flying skill. Granted an extreme example, but the point is the NATS has no real bearing on National standing just who won a single event in Muncie in July, no elimination series, no qualifying, just one other contest. I am just loving the discussion, and my comments have prompted some to speak out. it is only a forum, not a meeting of the AMA executive council. I don't have answers, just ideas and opinions like everyone else. The annual "what events we should drop from the NATS" talk got me going. The fact is attendance for any event will affect its likely hood of surviving, so my thought was if you are going to drop two meter, or hand launch, plus the way to controversial NOS discussion, what is in the wings waiting, how can the site be optimized and still have a NATs, one that draws 300 instead of 100. Does the NATS have to be The National Championship that some say it is because we say it is? Not a reason in my mind. Can it evolve to be a soaring showcase and National exposition of soaring as a community, not only a competition? Some made a big deal about one JoJo coming from Europe this year, why not make it jojo and company, an international invitational contest? Can we have a foreign national as US champion? Hey if you invite one... And so on... JD PS: For those saying put my money where my mouth is, I paid my dues, gave my efforts to organizing major events, submitting and passing rules change proposals for NATS events, for over 15 years, I feel somewhat qualifi
