Thanks for the plug Gordy.     Rich Hanson and his wife came out to the contest and spent all day taking pictures and watching the contest as well as the fun fly stuff we do after contest on Sunday. Like dash for cash and the ball drop, also we don't have a traditional raffle with all the prizes BUT instead we donate $10.oo of each entry to the raffle and draw tickets. each trophy winner and 10 from the middle of the pack receive free ticket for the drawing. 2nd. and 3rd place this year won $132.50 and first place won $265.oo cash.     Two days of great flying in mid July at the GAMBLERS' GALA contest, in a scenic area at the foot of the High Sierras. look at the photos on our web site www.sierrasilentsoarers.com      Lee Cox  CD[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Check out this month AMA, District 10 report, and of course Dave Garwood's slope column is top notch as usual.     Gordy LeeCox-Nevada, U.S.A. Re: [RCSE] For Sale Hitec Digital Servo Programmer...AND it....

2005-11-27 Thread Michael Lachowski
If you just want servo cycling, centering, and exercising the servos,
the JR Matchmaker is a little less expensive at $29.95. Also nice if
you are matching two servos on a control surface. Not that common on
most sailplanes, but a possibility on a scale ship or aerotow tug.

other wize. For instance, you can use it to exercise servos or surface
hinges...by simply clicking on the cycle mode...any servo brand. You can
use it to center any servo for installs, instead of having to radio up
to get linkage lengths and surface centers.

If you rig in a small amp meter you can check each servo's load while in
the plane.

The Hitec is self powered, has a rechargeable battery inside and
any wall bug will charge it.
So if you've been looking for something to control your servo's outside
the radio during set up, the Hitec works.

[RCSE] Frequency control

2005-11-27 Thread Tuan Le
Hi Mark Williams,

Thank you for your input.

Where our club ( The Harbor Soaring Society) flies, it is within a Public
Park. We do have a permanent frequency board.

When I got there another person was on my ch (54).

However, this person was at our slope flying area which is about 300 yds
from the main flying area. I took 15 minutes to scour the field looking for
the pilot. I have an Icom R2 that was used to find out if someone was in
fact on the channel.

After I spoke with this pilot, I just stood around chatting with friends.
When he was done he came and told me he was finish. I went to the frequency
board about 10 minutes after he said he was done. It was clear, put mine on,
went to launch and the Sharon went straight down.

I took the Icom out again and sure enough the ch 54 signal strength was on
8-9 I thought ok, the previous pilot must have turned on his radio, but
he was done and gone... So I walk again all over the place and found another
ch54 pilot who also was on the slope.

When I ask he said that ch 54 was clear when he put his pin up. I told him
it was clear when I put mine up.
Since this person is also a veteran of the field and knows well the rules I
couldn't for sure with 100% say it was his fault.

Upon coming back from the slope with him, we both saw that my pin with my
name is in fact on 54, but his was clipped to the back of the board. But he
swears it was on 54.

I am involve with the rulemaking committee at the field and have suggested
that an AMA card be clipped on to the frequency board as well like that of
Visalia, but because it is at a public park that so far has not required
AMA; it is hard to enforce to non AMA/Club members.

However, our club, (The Harbor Soaring Society) has worked out a plan with
the city to require permits and the full understanding of the rules and
procedures to fly there and hopefully this will help reduce some of the
accidents. Anyone else have suggestions? It would be great to get more input
before the rules are set in stone. Thanks.

[RCSE] "Sharon's can be protected against accidental hits"

2005-11-27 Thread GordySoar

Awhile back I got all excited about something that would virtually end any
chance of accidental same freq TX turn-onsespecially with the
availability of Synthesized TX modules being available for just about every
brand and everyone of them having dial numbers only seen clearly while using an
electron microscope.

The advert say's "EXTRA INSURANCE against unwanted frequency interference"

(which leads me to wonder, "How can I get
'wanted' frequency interference and why would I want some?"
:-)

I stated that this was one of the biggest good things to happen
to RC soaring technology in a long time...IF it worked reliably!  For
the first time, someone offered this for CHEAP and small.
The problem and I think what sort of cooled its impact was
that it didn't work as advertised...it turned out that it had a serious range
shortcoming...IF used as purchased

that fact cause a loss of trust and I think inspired apathy
toward it's use.  However modelers figured out that if you simply used an
alternative antenna length, it actually was trustworthy and would work as EXTRA
INSURANCE, and in fact would help protect your FRIEND'S Sharon's...or any other
sailplane on the field...from you.

Don't remember?  Too bad cuz it is cheap insurance and if
used with a standard protocol :
1) check the board
2) With or without a board, ask about freqs in use, or intending
to be used.
3) NEVER turn on your TX without turning on your 'insurance'
device first and seeing which freqs are in use!
4) Turn on and double check that your TX is showing the Freq you
posted or announced (you might have switch TX xtals, modules, or have your dials
set differently than you thought.

What was that "insurance", well turning it on when you get to
the field first thing, and installing a 30" whip antenna to it, would show who's
on what at the time Yep the Hobbico Freq Checker!

It came in handy last night at our annual nite fly here in
Louisville...and didn't ruin our night vision.  I don't leave home with out
it :-)
Gordy
Raining in Louisville and three new sailplanes ready to
test :-(

Re: [RCSE] Sharon 3.7 Pro Wanted

2005-11-27 Thread Mark Williams
Was yours on the board? If it was I would not be so cool. This should not
ever happen, especially with a frequency control board!!! How did his get
removed, did it ever get attached to the board, how will we ever know or is
that just an excuse for not accepting responsibility?

We fun and practice fly at a field that does not allow us to have permanent
structures, thus no structured frequency control boards. An incident
occurred this last week where a long time club member and ex-safety officer
turned on with out knowing who was in the air. The offended pilot was
knowledgeable enough to know he had an issue. He announced his problem and
the person on the ground turned off quickly enough for the man in the air to
recover control. I was very perturbed that these guys that fly together on a
daily basis had become so lax.

I sold that airplane to the offended pilot and he just prior to that had
told me I did him a favor. It isn't pretty and no where near the caliber of
a Sharon. But, guys frequency control is not something to take lightly. $150
or $3,000, five pound objects traveling at potential speeds in excess of 100
MPH are not trivial particularly when uncontrolled.

Looking for 1 in mint condition RTF or not is ok...

Totaled mine today right after the zoom as another pilot was on the same
channel, but as he said... Someone must have removed his frequency pin from
the board. It happens...

Anyway Let me know what you got.. I will have pictures posted on RCGroups to
see the carnage. Thanks.
