[RCSE] Wanted: RnR Millennium Wing Joiner

2006-04-15 Thread Keith Lutz
Hello,

OK, one last try. Earlier this month I asked if anyone had a Millennium
fuselage and wing joiner that they wanted to part with. I had great success
finding a fuselage but I still need a wing joiner. I know I can order one from
RnR, but I thought I would give the list one more try. Anybody??Please
contact me at my email address if you do. Thanks!

Concur on the Sta-Brite kit.  Often found in local hobby & craft
shops.  Worked great with the stainless tube push-rods (actually tubes)
that came with my Muller Esprit.  Have used the flux with other solder on
"stubborn" joints too.  Best to use an iron vice a torch, torch burns away
flux too quickly.  Do thoroughly clean away flux residue, water/detergent
& paper towel works.  Good Lift!

Anyone have ANY idea

[RCSE] Supra #16.

2006-04-15 Thread mrmaserati
Well gang, finally after a long winter here in Michigan The Supra #16 flew
today and fly it did.

At 65 oz it launches as if it were on rails, zooms without hesitation,
excellent speed range and lands where you want it to land with out complaint.

The air today was gusty and bumpy but #16 flew as though it were smooth and
calm.

Barry, this is the a great sailplane that you, Dr Drela and Vladimir have put
together and I can hardly wait to get some more time on it as the weather
improves here in Michigan.

For those of you who don't have one yet don't wait to order as the list is
bound to get longer.

As Gordy would say, wait and wail.

Regards, Dave Corven.

Rick,
The Sta-Brite silver solder kit that Tower Hobbies et al. has carried is the
one I've used. I use a 40 watt iron or 100 watt soldering gun.

I appreciate this. In the past I have used regular lead and tin solder
after having used an acid flux. It works well enough I guess (never had
one fail) but it always took considerable effort to get any kind of a
decent looking joint and then I never was happy with it. This was for a
stainless push rod to a mild steel push rod at the clevis.

Silver solder that I am aware of requires a torch. Will the kit you are
talking about here work with a soldering iron? And is there a special kit
for the work we are talking about?

Thanks, and sorry for the ignorant questions.

This one, from Tower, says it flows at 430 F.

Re: [RCSE] Push Rods

2006-04-15 Thread Michael Neverdosky
In addition to the other comments you also need to be sure to use enough heat.
The steel pushrod must be hot enough to melt the solder.
The three big reasons why solder won't flow out are;
1. Not enough heat.
2. Surface not clean.
3. Wrong flux or not enough flux.

[RCSE] CF cloth. . .can anyone spare a little?

2006-04-15 Thread Harley Michaelis
For Genie #30's wing, I have enough of the ACP 80/20 unidirectional 4.7 oz.
CF cloth for the center section and one tip. I'd much appreciate it if
someone can spare enough of it or something similar in weight for the other
tip. I can make do with pieces that measure at least the following:

A single piece 16" x 44" or a single piece 10" x 79" or 2 pieces 10" x 44".

Anyone?

What Clarence says. In addition, here's a note about the acid flux that
comes with the Silver Solder.

If you don't want to be tasting metal for the next few months, wear a NIOSH
respirator, solder outside, wear disposable gloves, and station yourself up
wind. If you get any on you, wash it off immediately. And if you don't want
residues that attach to local surfaces getting back on yourself and other
things, wash every surface near the actual soldering.

Nothing that's not already on the MSDS for the Silver Solder / Acid flux
(typically Zinc Chloride and Hydrochloric Acid) kit, but worth reminding.
Get lazy once, earn yourself a metallic taste for a long while.

[RCSE] Fw: GENIE PAGES UPDATED

Subject: GENIE PAGES UPDATED

While building big Genie #29, numerous new things were tried, worked well
and have been incorporated in the Genie web pages at
http://genie.rchomepage.com/ along with some new pics and text changes.
Friend Jay Decker gets the credit for updating the pages.

The end of File 1 now has a picture showing the final installation of the
removable "single tooth skid" that can be put into the nose of composite
fuselages not using slip-on cone.

File 2 has better material on knuckle hinging the rudder with Fourmost
Snap Tight hinges.

File 3, the bagged wing file, from about page 18 on has better stuff about
making servo mounts, servo wells, covers, RDS installations.

File 4, the Materials List and 5 on COSTS have been updated.

File 6, The RDS file has been materially revised. Something new is always
being learned about this all-internal system of moving surfaces. On #29, I
bonded a sleeve of 1/8" OD brass to the 3/32" SS flap drive shafts and got
a significantly stiffer installation in a very simple manner.

File 7, on the composite fuses has new pics and having done 4 such ships
over the fall/winter, good things were learned about installing, guiding
and supporting a carbon fiber pushrod for the stabs.

File 8 is unchanged, but so useful in getting a new ship ready for first
flights and progressively fine tuning it. I sure never have to ask anyone
about a CG placement or balance or throws, etc. Finding that stuff on your
own should be a no brainer.

After getting more experience with friend Winston Okerlund's Individual
Kevlar "Easy Hinges" system, I've decided it beats all hinging systems for
our sailplanes and have revised File 9 to reflect new things learned about
it. I've moved skinned hinge details to the end of the file. I doubt I'll
ever use them again.

File 10, the supplemental file for the LT/S has some new pics and new
material.

Remember that the next issue of the on-line soaring magazine, the RCSD at
http://www.rcsoaringdigest.com will have an additional and extensive
installment of Chris Boultinghouse's build of his big Genie. In the April
issue, you'll find the first installment and a "centerfold" of the plans.

I've gotten out a few times with #29 on a short high start and am so
pleased with it. Can't wait to do a go-for-broke launch on a good winch.
I'm already thinking about #30. Got a couple of new things to try out.

Subject: [RCSE] F5J or X5J Contest - August 19-20

Having decided that electric launched sailplanes are still sailplanes (same
as HL, winch launch, hand tow), we the Greater Detroit Soaring and Hiking
Society have decided to have a contest this year to try out this format.
Basically it is an F3J format with electric motor power rather than people
power and you can read the rules etc on our web site at www.gdshs.com under
the "F5J Contest" button on the navigation bar.

I put this out on the RCGROUPS (electric sailplane forum) a month ago and
got a lot of positive feedback from the NEAC fokes. This first year will no
doubt be a learning experience for us as our normal fair is open winch TD
because of past field limitations making a 5 or 6 up MOM difficult. This
spring the park has opened up our field and a 5 or 6 up MOM with electrics
should be fine.

I wanted to get this out to the contest sailplane contigent that may be
interested so they can see if it fits in their schedule. Hope some of you
can make it to help us get a handle on this new event and if I am correct
(unlike Gordy, I was wrong once) this format and launch system is going to
be a big boost for the sailplane community. We now do impromptu MOM duels
that would never happen with one winch out. No one has to run the retriever
and we use a count down tape in a boom box for a timer so timers are not
needed (not super accurate but good enough for fun)---great when sport
flying.

We (the club) got a lot more flying in this winter because none of us would
put up a winch in the snow and we could also fly at several different fields
that could not sustain winch line length. Now that spring has spung the
winch is coming out more, but not much.

What to fly? We fly a lot of small stuff (about 2 meters) but I have a
Graphite II electric and a Super AVA coming for electric so size, and
performance is not an issue. Check www.kennedycomposites.com and
www.nfmodels.com for examples.

I am a dealer for both of these fine guys in my area as Barry has the big
stuff and Kurt the little stuff and that way the field is covered. Kurt got
me going on this last year and I am hooked.

Sorry I took so long, but I got wound up about this.
